Elite Dangerous now on Steam

To add your existing Elite: Dangerous install to your Steam library and use Steam overlay in Elite: Dangerous, click Games > Add a non-Steam game to my library and add EDLaunch.exe, ordinarily located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch\ on a PC.

This was always possible, and makes the thread a no-news topic as far as i can see.

A lot of steam over nothing ? (pun intended)

Why would steam allow a thousands of people who already bought the game elsewhere use thier services free of charge going forward, when they are taking a cut of every new player to purchases now..

I think the realistic factor is Steam's cut of the profits.. im sure FD's statement of "We are looking into it" is more of a reflection of "We heard the feedback, and will see if we can negotiate a cost effective deal with steam to provide keys to backers".. If steam is going to take 20 bucks from each copy, FD has no reason to do it.. if steam will work out a bulk cost of say a buck a copy for all backers in a lump payment to do it.. i dont see why FD wouldnt..

Lots of other games do it, why not FD? Steam would be stupid to not get people signed up for their service by denying existing owners of games to use Steam. That's why they DON'T do that.

I thought that the purpose of backing a game is to actually help a game to come out... isnt it?
I never thought that was a way to keep me above all other players.
A lot has changed since. Originally Frontier said it would be both offline and online, for the PC and I never thought there be silly micro-transactions (like skins). So Frontier changed the goal-posts, not me. So as a backer, why shouldnt we have all the advantages? After-al we supported them. I know not everyone collects Trophies/Achievements, but I do (some track of achievement). If Frontier add them (which they have too on the console versions), then why cant I have them too (especially if the game is on Steam now)?

+1 for Steam key..........

Please.

I must admit as soon as I heard it was on steam I rushed to my ED account online and was expecting a key !!

Did they announce this at some earlier time?

I just want to know if this was known that they would release it on steam and when that release would be. I purchased it two weeks ago, and now I regret that because I'd much rather have it fully integrated into Steam.

Posting to register my interest in getting a key to get the game on steam, hoping I don't have to buy a second copy to do it, unless thats the intention here? If that is the intention is there some way to link accounts so I don't have to start from scratch again?

Please give me a free Steam key for Elite. I have a relative whose birthday is coming up, and they were going to buy a copy with their birthday money. I'd like to gift my free Steam copy to them instead.

I'm sure Frontier would make a lot of people very happy by giving away 300,000 copies of the game!

Since you say "at the moment", I hope that this will change.

I mostly wanted to be able to write a review, and maybe to have a way to avoid using the launcher, and start the game directly through Steam.

Avoiding the launcher seems very unlikely, but I see this whole thing as a very positive change.

If the launcher remains, then steam keys shouldn't be problematic. It would be no different than signing into the store to download the launcher. Anyone could give the launcher away, but it wouldn't do any good as they still need a valid game account. At first I imagined that was their pause; making sure it didn't act as a "I have one key from the store, so I gave away my steam key" catalyst, but the way the launcher works that should be utterly pointless. Maybe. I'm not sure how purchasing Elite from within steam works.

Why it matters to me:
Steam keeps track of my games for me. I tend to lose them otherwise. It's one of the first things I reinstall on a new system, and due to the various humble bundles and steam sales I have hundreds of games (some I've never played) and what I will play is chosen from that list almost exclusively. Elite and Dwarf Fortress are the only non-steam games I routinely play. I've bought and lost Another World, Mount and Blade, some RPG I don't recall and a bunch of others, everything tied to an email address that was lost to me and I'll never get those back. I switched to steam a few years ago and I've been wary of buying anything outside of the platform since then. Honestly, Elite may be the only one I've purchased without a steam key in years. Right now Elite is very fresh for me and I spend a lot of time playing it, but in 5 years seeing it in that list is what will draw me back in to get my ships out of mothball and find out what I've been missing. I don't mean that as some slight against Elite, that it won't hold my attention or anything back-handed... That's just how I am and I'm not likely to change at this point. I'm a cheap :D:D:D:D:D:D:D and while I'll buy it again on PS4 (still waiting on the announcement guys), I won't buy it again on steam.

I'm all for FD launching on Steam. And I don't need a key anytime soon.

But, I was a little shaken by FD's apparent lack of anticipating the first question EVERY player is going to ask...

Exactly. It makes them look bad and just adds to the long list of stupid decisions by FD. It's almost like someone is asking "How can we turn a good thing into a mess?" Wouldn't want to do something without a hitch, that might give the wrong impression.

Why not make it free to play on steam but then you have to purchase the game off of the Frontier site. That way anyone can download the launcher and everyone who has previously played it can log in to the launcher as normal.

Adds steam features, no steam keys run the risk of being given away and everyone is happy.

As much as I am on the fence about Valve/ Steam and their "ways" of doing things... having all your games in one library, that auto update is really beneficial.
They've said that the game will use Steam to update as well as their launcher.
Not only that, there is the community hub where owners of the game can share screenshots/ videos, create guides, write reviews. You can't do these things without owning the game on Steam officially.

It would be beneficial for existing players to get keys. We can then create guides on the community hub/ share videos etc.

I hadn't thought of that. FD why didn't you think of that?

That's a real missed opportunity for an awesome Steam launch.

Maybe formally organise with players who are content creators and get them a bunch of keys?

Damn, you need a community manager for that, didn't think of that...

Or they could have waited until they can tie both accounts together, like War Thunder for example, to name just one. There's no excuse for this crap. Poor planning on FD's part and another stupid decisions by FD.

More planning, less stupid decisions. Real story? We decided to release it on Steam before we could tie accounts from purchasers on our store to accounts on Steam.

This is just stupid. Bad anyway you look at it. I don't personally particularly care to play it through Steam but, you just wait and see what kind of a mess this causes, that could have been averted if they had waited and planned better.

I don't think its bad or stupid I think it'll bring in new revenue and players which can only be a good thing.

As a beta backer I couldnt care less if I get a steam key or not as I'm already playing (and enjoying) the game. The games great I've had my monies worth already anything else is a bonus.

For all you know they've already tied accounts together with steam and didn't tell us specifically because the forum carnage makes them laugh.

Broadcasts

I would love to give a glowing review of this game in Steam reviews and also broadcast it to my steam friends. Please don't make me pay an extra 60 dollars for that!

Thank you,
Yogen

Go read the headlines, they don't say "ED on Steam!" They say "ED on Steam, no key for existing owners!" Just stupid. Way to turn a good thing into negative press again FD.
