The DCS World guys had to deal with this for months, converting store bought dlc to steam keys. One at a time.

Really should have content creators with steam keys on there now.

Please give me a free Steam key for Elite. I have a relative whose birthday is coming up, and they were going to buy a copy with their birthday money. I'd like to gift my free Steam copy to them instead.

I'm sure Frontier would make a lot of people very happy by giving away 300,000 copies of the game!

Dude, none of us are asking for a free SECOND copy of the game. Stop being ridiculous. We simply want the option of transferring our accounts to Steam versions of Elite.

Why not make it free to play on steam but then you have to purchase the game off of the Frontier site. That way anyone can download the launcher and everyone who has previously played it can log in to the launcher as normal.

Adds steam features, no steam keys run the risk of being given away and everyone is happy.

Love how you people expect something for nothing, do you really think they've added the game on steam just to hand you a free key?

The money you spend on a additional copy will be put to a good use i'm sure (better not be the console versions).

At no point did they promise to hand out free keys on steam, again backers think they're entitled to everything, you paid 120 dollars to support and get early access, not to get additional keys.

If we get a steam key we won't be able to resell or give it away, A long time ago I bough Trackmania 2.
I got a serial number from Nadeo, the game wasn't on steam, when the game became available on steam.
I inserted the serial number given to me by Nadeo, it worked, had to re-isntall the game of course,
but it wasn't a second copy, same thing will happen with Elite Dangerous.

I'm a Kickstarter backer, dropped like 200 USD total for the game and I demand a Steam key, this is an insult to your most closed fans! I helped you build this game, for god's sake.

I have nothing against Elite being on Stem - hay I`m happy! It will bring tons of a new customers. I`m a steam user myself and enjoy the platform so far.
Now what I dont get is a lack of any hints or announcements from FD - it's not like they decided today morning - `hey lets go for this steam thing ok?`

The had to made the deal and know that they will months ago.

I backed your game on Kickstarter, hoping for it to come to Steam.
Held off on playing till now, hoping for it to come to Steam.

Now my hopes finally come true.

AND YOU WONT GIVE ME A KEY even tough i made your game possible in the first place through my funding? ːangrytitanːːangrytitanːːangrytitanː

I tell you what Developers.
I WILL NEVER PLAY YOUR GAME, if you dont provide Steam Keys.
Screw you, i wish i never had backed you.

So... but you paid already?

I don't think its bad or stupid I think it'll bring in new revenue and players which can only be a good thing.

As a beta backer I couldnt care less if I get a steam key or not as I'm already playing (and enjoying) the game. The games great I've had my monies worth already anything else is a bonus.

For all you know they've already tied accounts together with steam and didn't tell us specifically because the forum carnage makes them laugh.

Well they'll get plenty of LOL's out of this then.

Isn't there someone, somewhere, at FD that asks the questions like "Who's idea was this?" Of course not providing keys to existing owners is a net negative gain. who the hell couldn't see that coming?

Jesus, I'd love for FD, just once, to think things through BEFORE pulling the trigger on it. It's like they try to generate negative press.

The problem is that ED doesn't have keys, and the new purchases on Steam don't have keys either.

They'd have to start using a third party unique key system, which will give them a database from which they can give existing players keys and apply the keys to the new players accounts.

It was only a matter of time really, those who begrudge them using steam need to realise that they're missing out on between 70% and 80% of their sales by not using it. CD Project Red, who own gog.com sold 80% more copies of Witcher 2 through steam than they did through gog, so not using it is essentialy suicide. You should be happy that continued development is assured rather than crying about something that doesn't effect you.

That is not relevant I'm afraid, drop the entitlement attitude everyone, no one cares.

This is a great move and is a positive step, you can add your games to Steam anyway, if you know what you are doing.

Great news on the Steam launch & hope the new via-Steam-CMDRs don't have too many troubles getting accustomed to ED :)

A good way for FD to distribute the keys to existing players would be to send them out as non-transferable gifts to registered email addresses, i.e. to prevent resale of keys. If the existing players that want Steam keys and have different registered email addresses (why?) for ED & Steam then, well, they can be dealt with on a case by case basis - screenshots to prove account ownership etc - as I doubt there'll be many.

This. A transferable key would be like buying the game at half price and a loss of income for Frontier in many cases.

Humble Bundle does a good job of transferring steam keys into your account using the Steam API. Not everyone runs a single email box (I don't - the separation is very useful).

At least consider giving out steam keys. Unless there is a technical issue why not ? It's just good business to help loyal customers out !

"You can now get this game on Steam, or just carry on playing the way you always have"
"Slowly but surely FD are driving me away from this game"

Some logic is hard to follow.

Is it just a penchant for drama?

You miss the point, this is not something new. I have many games that later on gave me a steam key when they put the game on steam. This is not unknown, it's happened many times.

I think at least Frontier should give steamkeys to all Alpha and Beta players.

I have a LOT of friends on Steam just waiting for this to happen so we can all play together (they love Steam, I don't really care either way) and the first thing I heard from them is this "Haha, FD are idiots."

Seriously, who is in charge at FD?
