Elite Dangerous now on Steam

Please give me a free Steam key for Elite. I have a relative whose birthday is coming up, and they were going to buy a copy with their birthday money. I'd like to gift my free Steam copy to them instead.

I'm sure Frontier would make a lot of people very happy by giving away 300,000 copies of the game!

I guess because of cheap peeps like you there will be never free steam key for us backers.

I have a LOT of friends on Steam just waiting for this to happen so we can all play together (they love Steam, I don't really care either way) and the first thing I heard from them is this "Haha, FD are idiots."

Seriously, who is in charge at FD?

Perhaps they should call you first right?

Slowly but surely FD are driving me away from this game. Oh well.

Why is that? Genuine curiosity. I just don't see anything wrong with steaming up, except the flow of new customers enjoying the game they otherwise wouldn't. Could you elaborate? Thanks.

OK, meanwhile I'll scroll few pages back and look for an answer. :)

I have nothing against Elite being on Stem - hay I`m happy! It will bring tons of a new customers. I`m a steam user myself and enjoy the platform so far.
Now what I dont get is a lack of any hints or announcements from FD - it's not like they decided today morning - `hey lets go for this steam thing ok?`

The had to made the deal and know that they will months ago.
.
let me make it clear.
.
FD wanted more money (nothing wrong with that) they got the initial sales of the game from us lot without paying valve a premium and now want to advertise it further using Steam.
.
Valve charges a cost for each license sold to the developer to use the auto update servers and their platform.
.
FD would have to pay Valve to backdate the already sold licenses so didn't want a big announcement on the forums in the hope people wouldn't notice.
.
Basically we just got Gem stored. Godus style
.
Poor PR again

Jesus, I'd love for FD, just once, to think things through BEFORE pulling the trigger on it. It's like they try to generate negative press.

From where I'm sitting it looks like people enjoy moaning so much they go off the deep end before waiting to find out whats going to happen.

Whichever way this pans out for existing users getting steam keys, its still good news for every player.

And this is exactly why they probably are not going to give us the keys. So people like you don't give your copy away to someone else, and then come back to complain that your account was banned or your key was rendered invalid.

Love how you people expect something for nothing, do you really think they've added the game on steam just to hand you a free key?

The money you spend on a additional copy will be put to a good use i'm sure (better not be the console versions).

At no point did they promise to hand out free keys on steam, again backers think they're entitled to everything, you paid 120 dollars to support and get early access, not to get additional keys.

Actually I'm not a backer so don't make assumptions, I'm fine with not having a Steam Key, it's not like the game is no longer functional without it.

And my method didn't even mean Frontier would give out free copies. I doubt you even read the whole thing, you just saw the words "free to play" and jumped on the offensive.

What I am saying is that if the launcher is available for free on steam then everyone can download it, regardless if they have bought it or not.

And the game files will only download after you have logged in with the account created to purchase the game from Frontier's site, so that would mean people new to the game via steam would have to do the same thing everyone else has already done.

I am in no way implying that the game should be free, nor do I mention anything about Frontier giving keys away for free.

Get your facts straight before you make an argument.

You will be playing in the same universe, add them as friends in game and play with them.

Selling the game via steam is not the same as full steam integration and nothing has been said about it having full Steam integration.
I'll be very surprised if it's not just like other games with a separate launcher where all Steam does is act as a shortcut to that and a store front.

you do realise that 99.9% of the time steam only have a certain amount of keys (especially for pre-order games)

i reccommend this FD buy a bulk set.. issue them to all the beta and alpha backers.

then those ppl simply copy their existing file structure across to the steam apps common folder.. activate and jobs done!

either that or just include the API in the structure so its already activated if steam sees it.. etiher way you need a Frontier Account so its not really a hard task to implement really !

I'm a Kickstarter backer, dropped like 200 USD total for the game and I demand a Steam key, this is an insult to your most closed fans! I helped you build this game, for god's sake.

No you didn't help them build the game - you helped test the game they were building. BIG DIFFERENCE, Mr Self-entitled.

Guys, there aren't any keys to give. Steam doesn't require keys for all the games available on there and ED has never needed a key due to the online verifications.

They don't have any keys, so cut the whine. They can however add a key system.
