Elite Dangerous now on Steam

maybe I was dreaming but i thought it was said that if/when it came to steam then steam buyers would be paying for the extra that it costs to put it on steam?

given that the price is the same for both, I must admit i do actually hope that everyone gets a key.... then i can see how many hrs of my life i waste in the game ;)

We should have a key given out to us all. After all we have paid for this product and having it on our Steam accounts could only be a good thing right.

Why? So you have Steam checking if you own the game before the FD launcher checks if you really own the game? Or because of Steam Achievements?
There's really no benefit to having a steam key for Elite. None. In fact, you can play the game without even starting the steam launcher. I'd see that as a plus.

To add your existing Elite: Dangerous install to your Steam library and use Steam overlay in Elite: Dangerous, click Games > Add a non-Steam game to my library and add EDLaunch.exe, ordinarily located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch\ on a PC.

Hi Michael.... That works and all, but it does not record game stats etc which will happen if you buy through steam.

also......... Are you likely to be adding trading cards or steam achievements into it at all?

Thanks.

Not the same thing at all - the game will be added as a non-steam game, you will not be able to review it, the game art will not show up properly in the purchased games catalog, steam will not count hours played or anything of the sort,...
I could also add Planetside 2 etc. like that, but why should I do that when I should be able to just get it from steam?

We already have paid for the game, a lot of other publishers allow buyers to just simply import the game into their steam library even if they've bought it somewhere else, why can't you do that as well?

Aye, put me down for one!

I know Valve aren't likely to dish out keys for free...

Quite happy to pay a fee to cover the cost of purchasing a steam key (as long as it's not exthortionate), stick the option in the store or something?

Automatic patching as well as "I want all my stuff in one place" are reasons, even if they're not going to use any steamworks features.

Hi Michael,

Would rather have the game registered on the Steam servers as a Steam game to take advantage of the back-end ecosystem. Your method just puts the game on the list.

I'd be very interested in acquiring a native Steam key even if it costs a few bucks to do it. Thanks.

I don't see any issue here to be honest, not sure I'll bother routing the current install through Steam as all running it through Steam will do is load the current launcher anyway won't it? I suppose being able to pop a browser window has some advantages but I just alt+tab to my second monitor if I need to.

Biggest plus for us to having it through Steam would be the ability to use Steam Streaming I'd have thought. Does streaming work with non-Steam games added to Steam?

Going onto Steam is a logical choice for the Devs, the number of active accounts and potential new players on there is huge.

Michael - do you know if there is a way to be able to add reviews on Steam even if you have the non-steam version of the game?

I'd personally like to give an extremely glowing positive review of this more-addictive-than-crack game you have made :)

I have had various games before bought from other sources that gave me a steam key months down the line after they decided on putting the game on steam. But if Frontier think they are bleeding another £35 out of me after I've paid £200 for Alpha they have another think coming. I would like to add the game to my steam list but there's no way I'm paying again.

this may be selfish, but I hope this does not mean in 2 months time it will be in the 4.99 steam summer sale pile!....... Kind of hoping it stays premium price for a little longer.

bare in mind Michael did say "not at the moment"

maybe its just a logistical thing which may be sorted out "soon"

Not immediately, but we'll see.

Michael

cool... thanks for the reply.

Let's hope they offer a CD Key transfer program.

Steam achievements and Steam VR integration perhaps?

I wish this was announced sooner though...

I'm guessing there are some fiddly issues with distinguishing steam editions of the game from say alpha/prem beta/beta installations and providing access to beta versions of updates, and the expansion packs (DLC), when they come along ?

They would probably have to keep alpha/betas seperate from the main game, they could in theory have a special "founders edition" of it on Steam and then just publish the betas through there.
