That is true. However, I remember being puzzled at the time as Frontier said that an offline version that had been a feature of the KickStarter wasn't possible.
I believe the code he said they would make available would be the code so the game could be run on servers - ie not an offline version. For the community to continue ED in that situation would mean paying for servers.

Well DB didn’t actually say it wasn’t possible, just that it wouldn’t meet their vision for a living, breathing Galaxy.

I forget the exact wording, but it was a design decision not a technical one.

Edit: from the Newsletter: “A fully offline experience would be unacceptably limited and static compared to the dynamic, ever unfolding experience we are delivering.”
A further statement by M. Brookes - “The problem is that the galaxy mechanics all sit on the online servers...The data set and processes are huge and not something that would translate offline without considerable compromise to the vision.”

That may well be the case, it became a design choice about a month or so before the alpha I guess. I just wonder in my inexpert way, how a game that relies so heavily on server side wil be handed over to the community. Easy to say, easy to do?

I mean, they could sell the thing... To a company that can actually run it.

This "promise" does not mean what people think it means.

🤷‍♂️ For a single player, offline, I’d want to see a little bit of fluctuation in Market prices and the occasional change in System state. Replace the BGS with RNG? Maybe have a local server on the offline machine that can spit out info to the game when requested?

I think the reason Offline got binned originally is because the game was too deeply tied in to calling the servers and FDev didn’t want their server code in the wild for the haxxors to take advantage of.

These questions have been asked, but you did a good job summarizing them. :)

I'd like to add at least one more which has also been asked:
  • Do you have an ETA after launch when VR will be available for Odyssey or can you confirm that it will at least eventually be available?
PS4 users are still waiting for VR support. I saw it was never going to happen so I migrated to PC. I hope it does happen though.

I think Ian is doing pretty well for himself as a senior software engineer at autodesk. Presumably specialising in making my grip settings disappear in autocad when I've got a deadline.
It'd be great if the original elite was hidden in autocad somewhere, accessed by drawing a wireframe cobra.
Out of all of that i understand software engineer, deadline and drawing a wireframe cobra but i get the gist of it i suppose lol
