Too be clear. I'm not asking for VR spacelegs. I'm asking that the current functions in VR will still be available in the new expansion without having to restart the game. Just a smooth transition from flying your ship in VR to space legs on flatscreen.

I can understand that spacelegs is difficult to implement in VR. But this is litterally a regression of functionality if you can't fly your ship anymore in VR from within the new expansion.

I hadn't touched ANY game in 35 years until VR came out. That's when I started playing again.. As long as there are still other games in VR to play I'll play.. if not.. I can do other things with my time.
I actually preordered Elite on nostalgic feeling from the 80s game. DIdn't even touch it until my Oculus Rift arrived. It was unused for months.. Then it pretty much set the benchmarks for VR games. I would really hate to lose that. It's now a couple of years later and they've been pretty stagnant. Now we may know why..

I just read from the announcement that VR will not be available at launch as meaning exactly that - Odyssey will launch as pancake only, no VR content at all...

I know, that how i read it also. But thats exactly my problem with it.

I see reactions about us VR players trying to delay spacelegs etc etc. Thats not what's happening here.
We just don't want regression in functionality. It's like saying to the playerbase that you can't dock on outposts anymore.

Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We’re big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.

That is extremely disappointing and a bit strange.

I'm not sure I follow where the difficulty would be. The base game is VR compatible. Odyssey will be console compatible which means gamepad friendly, so VR input is not a problem.

Hopefully the powers that be will realize the size of this mistake and right the ship.

No VR support is extremely disappointing. I sincerely won't be buying Odyssey then, and my excitement for the new era is obviously gone.

I expected a minimally viable VR experience for stuff on legs (such as, you're in VR, but you don't have roomscale and motion controls, ya use your choice of controllers to move, that's all fine for me), but to not have it supported is awful. This game is mainly fun because it's a VR game.

All I can do for now is complain and remove the game from my Steam Wishlist. The other new additions don't come close to covering for the lack of VR. And even though Horizons and the base game will still have VR, that's a game that hasn't been updated substantially in ages... there's no reason for someone like me to try to help support future development with buying cosmetics like I have been, or to be a dork who would've pre-ordered Odyssey the moment it was for sale (and of course I'm now a dork who simply won't buy it).

And the idea of needing to switch back and forth, playing in VR in the old game for a bit and then switching to Odyssey... no thanks! That sounds lame. How is that meant to work? At what point do we hit the non-VR wall?

Hopefully Frontier reconsiders!

Stay Safe, Commanders o7

I'm sorry, but over the past 4-5 years (not to mention the prior 32 I spent in older editions of this game) I've played Elite Dangerous, I've become exclusively acclimated to VR gameplay. Given that ObsidianAnt has posted a recent speculation concerning that there will most likely never be VR support introduced for Odyssey, I just don't see how I can play this game anymore. I will await some kind of further reply to this concern here in the forums; but as it stands, I'd have to say it shall likely be that Odyssey ends any interest for me in Elite. My confidence in Frontier, which as a software developer has held steadfast despite the many bugs and delays over the past several years with respect to feature introduction and support has completely evaporated with this statement and I now see Frontier as betraying those of us using a specific kind of gaming interface — leading me down a path away from games authored or in any way sponsored by Frontier in the future.

You've erred greatly in this decision and I would strongly urge you to reconsider (which I'm sure isn't likely either).

Disheartened,
Trium

This seems insane. The draw for ED is VR. I am so so dissapointed :(

Its going to be a clunky transition if your'e in VR then go to walk round your ship for the game to bomb out to a non VR environment. So either you won't be able to walk round your ship at all in Odessey or you wont be able to launch the expansion at all with VR support ?
Who knows eh ?

I don't even want space legs. I just want the new planet tech. How would that be tied to space legs? I've already paid for it too.

Because despite it being perceived as a piece of DLC, this is almost certainly a re-engineering of the game from the ground up.
