Elite Dangerous: Odyssey - Background Simulation Balancing

What is a Background Simulation? Lol
You ask a very complicated question, but in essence the Background Simulation (commonly referred to as BGS) is a massive, sprawling simulation of the universe which determines the influence of minor factions, system states (such as wars), station ownerships, commodity prices, and even the available equipment in a given station. Nearly everything you do in game influences this in some small way, but consistently working for the same faction successfully will focus your effect. The main players who deal with BGS are player minor factions who are looking to claim a stake of space to call their own (of which there are many), and players actively involved in powerplay for reasons other than getting gear as the government in charge of a system within a power's influence affects it.

Well, let's just wait 18 hours for the tick to slowly wander through the galaxy erratically so we can maybe figure out what is going on.

Greetings Commanders.

With the launch of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, we have been monitoring the effects it has had in relation to the Background Simulation.

We have been collating Commander gameplay data throughout the last week. Using this data, we will be making changes today to balance out the effects Odyssey missions have on the Background Simulation This will bring them in line with existing mission effects in Horizons.

We are aware of a number of concerns raised from player communities around the impact Odyssey has had on the Background Simulation. We will continue to monitor this closely going forwards.

These changes will take effect as of 15:00 UTC / 16:00 BST today.

Fly safe, Commanders o7

Please don't break the BGS too everything else is already broken.

The ol unknown unknowns eh. Must be hard to predict a lot until thousands of players are pushing things around.

Keep it up!

Hello. I can see that some random guy did not bother to explain to you what's the BGS.

For more information about how this works you can go here:

A part of the game that a lot of folks in the game play and enjoy. Don't diss it until you've tried it.
There is some degree of toxicity in your reply. Try to be nice to new players as they might not understand some terminology that is normal to you but new to them.

Monitor it closely? what about repairing the damage that it has done. our PMF have thrown in the towel. this was a demoralising blow. Months of game time, gone in a blink of an eye.

As for the 'rebalancing': Going to assume this is mainly directed at the ongoing Anarchy Armageddon..?
I'm not convinced the person was"dissing" anything, but genuinely asking what Background Simulation was. I certainly wasn't aware of what it meant. Had to look it up.

Are we any closer to knowing what was changed?
Looks like they "fixed" some wars. There was a bug where the winning faction in a war dont gained anything and lost the war while they should have win the war due to the System News. Some of these factions now got an Influence spike and are in pending war again. Dont know if any Anarchy PMF could speak up, but looking at the Influence % on inara, they got some Influence spikes in some systems. Mabye they are playing a lot currently to prevent the death, or FDev is actually looking after them.

Too early to tell, we're deep in damage control.

Half a dozen control wars we're trying to spin out with more pending. The tick being incredibly weird and staggered doesn't help as we have to check the remaining systems multiple times per day. We lost less INF than previous days but we're already locked up in most high traffic systems so there's just no way to know at this stage.

The saddest thing is we're currently looking to shake off as many settlements as we can since they seem like a huge liability. In some systems we have 40+ of the bloody things haemorrhaging INF. It's a shame to ask members not to engage in the fresh new feetCZs we're all excited to experiment with, but why we'd want glorified engineer material warehouses for every minmaxer to dunk their way through a dozen times a day is beyond me.

Maybe they'll have hidden benefits once things settle down, I hope so because shiny new toys should be fun and balanced, not a burden.

Sad to hear. Even if we arent close friends to Anarchy PMFs and would have a better time without them in the Grom Sphere, this hurts because it wouldnt be a fair engage atm.
Even tho, i hope the best for every Anarchy PMF, so they dont loose years of playtime, because of a game issue.

Thanks. Yeah we're not usually very public about anything, but this has very visibly been the worst patch of all time for us, and given it doesn't look like we'll be getting a roll-back all we can do is run around putting out fires and counting on the, uh, sportsmanship of our neighbours.

The actual Odyssey content seems better than I expected though, I'm looking forward to trying it when I can finally leave these CZs, which will hopefully happen before we all get carpal tunnel...

The BGS and Stellar Forge is a huge subject, The system that governs all data used in Elite Dangerous.

Read this for more.

I honestly don't think FDev actually cares about the BGS; they've let it fall into disrepair so many times and at best have only applied bandaids to kick the can farther down the road.

If you are in a PMF or lead one, your best bet right now is to just disband, because things are not going to get better.

Is it possible to get an Information about the current state of the BGS?
It really seems like the BGS is running crazy or is driven by an Thargoid AI.

Factions are working hard and all the effort is blowing into the Stardust.
