Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Q&A - Weapons

I have to say that this post fills me with more concerns than excitement.

Elite has tried to keep itself rooted in reality (despite being sci-fi), and consistency is the key to immersion. Whilst it's very important for game play reasons to have a way for infantry to counter ships, the idea that anything that can be carried by a person could damage a ship just doesn't fit into the Elite universe.

Look at the size of a class 1 pulse laser compared to a person, they're not small. Consider the power requirements to fire one of those, and the power distributor to handle charging them. Now point one of those class 1 pulse lasers at an Anaconda and watch how long it lasts (hint, according to our favourite coriolis.io, a stock sidewinder (that's two pulse lasers) will take 2m 50s to take out the shields and a further 21 minutes to take out the hull of a stock Anaconda).

With the above in mind, anything fielded by a person, needs to be in orders of magnitude less effective against ships. I will accept at a minimum, that some sort of shaped charge bolted onto the outside of a hull could scratch a ship.

The only way to damage ships has to be installation weapons (and these should be huge and effective). And game-balancing techniques from games like PlanetSide 2 need to be considered, such as roofs and installation shields to prevent air-borne attack.

Now... weapon attachments. Please do not tell me that over a thousand years into the future, where humanity has figured out how FTL, we have somehow forgotten how to make an attachment rail for a gun. And even if that is the case, humanities greatest engineers can't figure out a way to have removable attachments. Please, for the sake of all that's immersion, use your common sense when developing these things.

Elite gets a lot of flak because it's more sim than game. It's also it's saving grace, a lot of people like the sim, don't make it inconsistent and unbelievable, there is only so far I can suspend my disbelief.

Greetings Commanders!

We're back again this week with more answers for you on Elite Dangerous: Odyssey. This week we're taking a look at your questions regarding on foot weaponry.

Weapons

Q: Will anti-vehicle weapons be available?
All weapons can be used against ships, however some are far more effective, such as explosive weapons like rocket launchers and grenades.

Q: Will players be equipped with a weapon immediately upon launch?
Just as you will always have a Sidewinder available as a ship, all players will have a side arm to help them in combat

Q: Will there be melee weapons?
Players will be able to attack with melee when close but there are no specific melee weapons.

Q: What kinds of explosives are there?
Only grenades and rocket launcher are planned for launch

Q: Will the aiming reticule always remain on-screen?
The reticule is used to interact with objects as well as for combat, so will always be on-screen. Firing from the hip will still use the same reticule for general direction, but will be less accurate.

Q. Which weapons allow you to look down the sights?
All weapons will have this function, however different scopes are available for each through Engineering.

Q. Could players throw grenades at ships an expect to deal significant damage if it's unshielded?
Yes and we look forward to watching it happen!

Q. What types of weapons will there be?
There's a wide variety of weapons from pistols, rifles and SMGs, to shotguns and rocket launchers. More details will be revealed on these later.

Q: Will players be able to upgrade their weapons with attachments?
You can choose from several attachments for your weapons. However, a modified weapon cannot be reverted, so think carefully. You can own multiple copies of a weapon for different situations, but can only carry a limited number of them at a time, depending on your suit type.

Q: Can you drop ammo/grenades for your friends?
Yes - other players can pick up and use your dropped items.

Can we deal guardian site on foot and take guardian drop by hand?

As I said, one person attacks were frequently practiced scenarios. You might not think one person would be able to do much damage to a warship, but the Navy disagrees.

The funniest practice attack I ever saw was two Royal Marines on a jet ski - with the guy on the back stood up with an empty LAW launcher. Unfortunately for him it’d been snowing so he got a bit of “incoming” himself 😁

Back to EDO - massive ship weapons fired at fairly long range compared to handheld stuff at close range - how (or if) this get explained will be interesting. Will it be like targeting the Power Plant now, where you get some good shots in for a possible early boom? Grenades could be self-shaping penetrating charges or some other sci-fi handwavium, and the much closer ranges and more accurate targeting could explain the increased damage. To jump back to real-world analogies - a single frogman with strategically placed shaped charge limpets could probably do some serious damage to a ship, but we’re probably not going to be replacing our missile systems with long-range frogman-launching guns to attack other ships with 😁
I'd known such attacks were war gamed, but not heard of that particular story :) The key point is.. They didn't swim up to the ship only carrying what they could lift. They had a vehicle to assist. In Elite terms it's like driving fast in an SRV that is carrying 2 tons of boom mines, and attacking said ship by unloading the cargo by themselves.

I thought of the frogman example, but being blunt anyone who parks their ship in the middle of a firefight is asking for it. The info doesn't mention limpet mines just missiles and grenades although since we are talking about OP weapons instead of (space) frogmen guns my vote would go for a skimmer multi-cannon. Instead of bullets it fires skimmers... :)

Would still need melee weapons, just in case.
They even had sharp sticks!

Will there be specific handheld weapon damage towards shields vs. hull vs. modules depending on the weapon/attachments/engineering?

Everything you can do in Odyssey you can already do in this tech demo called "star citizen". nothing really unique here.
Instead, what I would have loved to see is more things like planetary/moon mining with planetary vehicles, new game loop that involve ship interior. EVA game loops. Caves

nobody is going to quit Fortnite to play Odyssey because it has FPS now. I think FDev took the request for "space legs" way too far. Nobody really wanted a full on FPS game. People play Elite because they enjoy flying space ships and exploring the galaxy. If you want FPS, go play Borderlands or Battlefront, idk there are so many options...

This is all great, however I hope the questions about combat are now exhausted and we can start getting a glimpse at the rest of the game mechanics, or is it going to be yet another FPS?

Some of that will be the mounting and ammo reserves, which will likely be cut down for players. Also, pilot's federation members in 3307 are significantly augmented compared to regular people in 2021.
Yeah, I mean look at the pilot augmentations in Titanfall and that happens a full thousand years before Elite

Change "nobody" to "myself, HRDiagram and BartTP". You don't talk for everybody. ;)
I'd be OK with that IF they didn't entirely focus on that aspect of the game. Alas, as far as we know, Odyssey is mainly about combat instead of making new planets interesting places to be on, like caves, weather, snowfalls, surface mining and stuff like that. This is why the thing I really care about is a graphic overhaul and the lobby to meet other cmdrs in person. I will try new missions, sure, but I doubt it will become my main game activity. Like others said, if I'd wanted to play FPS, I'd play dedicated game.

Q: Will there be melee weapons?
Players will be able to attack with melee when close but there are no specific melee weapons.
Can you please specify if there's going to be fancy finish animations for melee kills? Or enemies will simply go ragdoll when you land the final hit?

So weapons are intended to be the equivalent of ships in odysee? Well won't say anything bad about a feature not for me.

Guess combat players won the headline feature this patch. Fair enough, its their turn. Enjoy shooting things.

So the mission board gives us a ticket to one round at a classic fps map.. capture the flag like objectives then reward. No idea if i even like fps anymore. Looking forward to finding out.

This makes me sad. I was hoping for futuristic and/or traditional swords (style + would fit the Empire perfectly in my opinion) or at least knifes to get some melee surprise for enemies :D

According to Coriolis, a small seeker missile rack can take down a stock Sidewinder hull in 8 seconds. I imagine that the handheld rocket launcher will not exceed a small missile rack in terms of damage, so if your ship does not have a paper hull handheld weapons will pose very little danger.

Of course until we actually get to try it we won't know for sure.

Has anybody said reverb cascade SAM? I’m gunna say reverb cascade SAM...

I'd be extremely surprised if Frontier went to the effort of animating finishing moves, especially since it seems like melee combat is an afterthought at best.

Screenshots and video is what people need to see as a description is like concept fantasy . As it is early 2021 actual game work in progress demos streamed live might help seduce more pre orders of Odyssey , if Bill Oddie can show his toe nails on live TV why can`t FDev do the full Monty with the progress of Odyssey , no need to be shy we are long grown adults that have seen intimate pre alpha gameplay from Star Citizen .
Hmm makes you think doesnt it. I'm getting concerned more delays. They haven't released any real content for months, absolutley nothing this year at least. Apparently the last dev diary is still being worked on and autumn/spring starts on monday. Alpha is suppose to be launching within the first few weeks and we barely have anything.

I'm afraid further delays on release are imminent...
