ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous | Odyssey: Roadmap

I'm personally waiting for multicrew missions to come out, only for no one to be able to do more than one at a time if lucky, because the multiplayer aspect of the game is still as broken as ever.

I would have been happier if the whole on-feet thing had been exploration only
Me, too. The assault infantry approach to the FPS portion of the game just feels completely out of place with me. As I said before, we're PILOTS, not space marines.

If there needed to be combat, I would have gone in a different direction. I would have limited weapons to personnel protection - stunners, SMGs, pistols - and had the flavor of combat be less about open warfare and more about pilots being able to protect themselves when a deal goes bad. I'm thinking more Deus Ex and less Battlefield.

All good feedback, thanks for the thoughts on it for sure!

Seriously, we don't ever set out to deliberately make your lives difficult - we value you a tonne and it's horrible to see the level of frustration communicated back at times, which we absolutely want to help reduce by making as many improvements as quickly as we're able. We sadly don't just have commitments in forums. We have duties with development, social platforms, ongoing feedback, emergency issues, initiative planning, TONNES of things where if we see feedback on how we can improve here to help speed this side along and bring happiness then heck, we'll take it! We just sometimes might trip a little and therefore need to action a learn from it - I think this is a case in point today with the update info.

These are great thoughts, as I say, thank you. I can experiment with some myself moving forward - the Camera Suite focus feedback thread I ran was AWESOME! The benefit of that was the highlight of my last week and sure, these could do very well in a sub forum! I agree! All good things here to help us help you, and absorb :) Thank you (I keep saying it...).
After the Alpha's closure, you should have delayed EDO at least until autumn. Most would have agree with that. A Beta to re-check in late summer. The release only 3 weeks (?) after the Beta....ups ALPHA (!!!) was such a great mistake by you, ans I don't know why you've released it in such a crappy state. o7

Do you want to scare the players? What are the plans for the future?

I think with the hindsight of knowing how the launch went it's easy to say it should have been delayed, I don't think anyone thought it would go that badly (perhaps some higher-ups should have had more of an idea than they apparently did).

I hope the improved and humanising honest communication continues though, and I look forward to seeing future Dev progress updates and insights into the justifications for why the direction (whatever it is) is being chosen.

If nothing else it will give the community something more to talk about than problems with the Odd DLC.

No offense, but the statement that ED is made with VR in mind and using their own 'ad' as proof, is not proof of anything. The only real proof would be to see the vr hooks in the actual code. And taking Mr Braben's word on something isn't proof that something exists in the code.
Well, David Braben definitely showcased VR to promote ED:

I found it disheartening that UE5 is better than Elite Dangerous Odyssey in many aspects such as:
  • Terrain
    • Overhanging features
    • Deformable terrain
  • Weather
    • Clouds - volumetric and adaptive
    • Lighting
      • reflective glow
      • sunset - daylight - twilight - night
  • "Many things and improvements" to paraphrase our "roadmap"
The Cobra engine is like an old house that is continually being repaired and a money sink when it would be more sensible to demolish and make a new one. But what are we going to expect from mediocre management that continues to bet on the losing horse.

I thought it was more like an old MG, or Jaguar with quality control issues...

Oh, there is going back. I've done it after all. I didn't touch my Rift for years.

VR is impressive, it completely changes the experience and the feeling of sitting in a giant cockpit is awesome. Still, it's not the way I want to play video games. I often eat something, drink a beer, talk to the wife, check something on my mobile. With the HMD I don't even know what's happening around me. Sure, it's quite immersive, but I want to know if someone enters the room.
I guess the difference between pancake and VR is similar to PCs vs consoles. The PC is definitely superior when it comes to versatility, peripherals, performance and graphics. But lots of people prefer to sit on their couch, press a button and play a short FIFA session with their friends.
So I'd say there is 'no going back' from VR for the people who actually want that experience. For others it's a nice gimmick.
Well, yes, poorly phrased by me. ;) I cannot go back to playing pancake -- at least not ED, simply because I have experienced the glory of VR.

I put on the HMD, then my headphones (the audio experience provided by the Rift S is not exactly my cup of tea), but I have no problem discerning whether or not somebody enters the room, or tries to talk to me, due to volume control.

I did not want to give the impression that VR is vital; it IS a gimmick, admittedly (as in, a luxury that is not essential for one's well-being -- but then again, video games in general aren't, either...), but for me, it is such a nice gimmick that I do not wish to experience ED without it.
Thank you for your input -- and I hope EDO improves for you. I sincerely do.

Oh, I think many thought it would go badly, just as soon as they declared the launch date so soon after the alpha and no beta.
Yeah, FDev knew the game wasn't ready for prime time but they didn't care. And honestly, I don't think they care about the community blowback, either. FDev is playing longball here. They know that they have the entirety of summer - the low point of interest in gaming - to fix things up. If they do - and I expect they are confident they can - they are counting on an NMS effect where a disgruntled community, fresh from a summer break, comes back to the game to discover that it is fixed and enjoyable again. Review scores will turn positive, and player counts will rise. It's a win-win situation for them as they got their end-of-fiscal year release and a return to community engagement and healthy sales. Again, just look at NMS or X4. Both had similarly bad launches, and both now enjoy good reviews and growing communities. So what if the forums burn for a few months? That costs FDev nothing.

That costs FDev nothing.

I'd say losing 20-25% of your stock value over the course of a month is "taking a f*cking kicking"

specifically down from £2.86 GBP on May 20th to £2.36 to date losing

Stock price will not be related to sucess of Odyssey fixes, because its not about (existing) happy customers , they have our money already.

its about new (console) sales and anyone with half a brain will have cancelled their pre-order.

See, that is where we disagree. I understand what you are saying but I have a different perspective. I learnt a lesson from NMS and X4: today's villain is tomorrow's hero. Gamers, sadly, have a very short memory and are more than willing to forgive and forget if they eventually get what they want. If the game is fixed for console release, I think FDev can be confident that console sales will be strong, along with an influx of new PC sales. Frankly, I am proof of that. I didn't buy Odyssey because of the bad reviews, and I consider what FDev has done to be shady at best. Having said that, IF Odyssey is polished up by the fall, FDev can almost certainly count on my purchase (albeit at a discount - my pound of flesh :)) because I am a fan of the game and there isn't currently a title that can fill its niche. That's the key: FDev knows that Elite has claimed its own kingdom and, at the moment, there are no pretenders to the throne. That is why they are cocky and will, in all likelihood, get away with what they pulled.

Share price is only a picture of how popular the company is at that point in time; it has no direct effect of anyone inside the company.

As a company director I can tell you that If you are an shareholding employeee or director, then stock price can have a very big impact on you.

The game released was rushed to meet an end of financial year, why ? So the sales could be recorded in that year and count toward that years profit. This was not just to make the figures look good to external shareholders, often directors bonuses are tied to sales performance targets, and are often paid in shares instead of hard cash.

ie. share price has a big effect on payouts for board members.
