Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Update 8 Notes

Organics & Geologicals
  • Ice-type spouts now have emissive properties.
  • Visual improvements to Geysers and Ice fumaroles.
  • Fix for multiple floating fumaroles, lava spouts and geysers on planet surfaces.

So we have 3 fixes listed under Organics and Geologicals, none of which I have ever seen in the wild or seen complaints about in the forums, and yet no mention of Stratum Tectonicas orbiting L-Class stars. I'm disappointed with that.

Inside building view, behind the glass of those IND building top floors my performance used to tank a bit sometimes below 40 easy. Now:

Different settlement, same 70 fps

It is my number one pet peeve with the community team. I am not blaming them personally, I know it is up to FD management to decide this, but all I want to know is two things:

1) What performance do you target for which hardware/settings?
2) When do you think you can get (close to) that?

Its always smoke & mirrors with them. Peformance 'improved significantly' (meaning what?), the team is 'well under way' (to where?) and so on. Is the performance I am getting what FD expects me to get? Are they satisfied with it? Do they expect meaningful improvements? If so, how much? When?

Its not fair in the sense that ED is an infinitely better game than SC, but the last year FD has been inching closer and closer to the Baghdad Bob-vibe I get from CIG's communication strategy. It seems to be working for them, but I wish their 'open and honest' communication would be a bit closer to what common folks would understand by those words.
In idle moments I wonder how it is going to go when CIG finally starts the bug fix and optimisation cycle For SC! I suspect not smoothly!

From what I have seen so far SC has similar FPS (maybe heavier on the CPU) but also has quite a bit more graphics wise, and they are talking about vulcan as well.

Still getting huge frame spikes when entering stations (as in going through the airlock, and entering from supercruise) and approaching Odyssey settlements (both scenarios drops framerate to around 4fps, worst case), light is still bleeding through solid surfaces in stations, and shadows are still dancing everywhere.

Performance in the concourse really good now though, almost reaching a consistent 60fps minimum. Odyssey settlements are still netting me 40-55fps on average after the frame spikes are over.

When exiting my ship into on-foot gameplay - in the black transition screen - I drop to around 20fps when near an Odyssey settlement.

Ryzen 7 3700x and GTX 1080ti if that matters, resolution is also 1920x1080, no upscaling.

Yeah Im getting solid 48+ fps in the social space now inc. walking through the bar looking through the window, used to drop into the mid 30s at some busy NPC points previously. Obviously the lighting optimisations is working well here maybe the density of reflections and glass etc?

i7 7700K, GTX 1080, 32GB, 4K Monitor @ 60Hz, Ultra Preset + "Ultra+" Terrain, AMD FSR set to Balanced.

Weirdly just been switching context between Windows desktop back and forth and the FPS dropped to consistantly being in the 30s fps in the same locations, strange, restarted game and it went back to being good, wonder if my Windows was doing some priority thing?! Havent seen it do again after switching to desktop a few times....

Went down to mid quality and it was the same. Weird thing is, this part of the map specifically, tanks the FPS big time. On Ultra, High & Mid settings, the second I stood in this general spot, the FPS would suddenly tank. I could walk ten feet away and it goes back up to the 30's or 40's.

Hmmm I would positively select a different AMD FSR setting even Ultra, just to make sure its loaded, and then turn it back to Balanced or whatever you think it should be, I had an issue when I upgraded to Update 7 and my AMD FSR setting was being ignored.

400% improvement. I'd call that pretty massive actually.

Updated the post some more. Tanking happens when you exit your ship. When you reload into on foot mode, tanking happens again within the first 30 sec, but no more after that.

In most game things need to come to life and that takes cycles, so I'm kind of ok with that. After the initial drop, I haven't seen it happen again. So yeah, things got better.

  • Odyssey Engineers: Added pin blueprint functionality
Sorry but i didn't find the fonctionality .... tried on 3 ingeneers ... nothing special or new ... it seems that there's no monitor in the settlement too. Thank you

I was messing around with the graphic options there and selected 'VR Quality High', the AMD FSR thing is on as well. Now its staying above 30 FPS and scratching 40, running a lot smoother now.

Well, one thing that definitely still isn't fixed is mobs going AWOL in the middle of an exterminate mission.

During on-foot combat at a conflict zone settlement, the player camera visibly recoils and shakes when taking damage (i.e. taking fire from enemy gunfire, grenade blasts) however sometimes this camera shaking continues after taking said damage, and becomes quite aggressive and uncontrollable.
This thing was implemented with the update I assume? Cause I never had that before this update so it is quite funny that you decide to release a patch with a known issue that is caused by the said update...
Edit: Just had it happen to me in on foot CZ after the update, thx very fun feature
