News Elite: Dangerous Steam Keys

OP was from Ed as well, which made perfect sense to me.

"Yeah, that's a fair interpretation. We don't think of it as a tax though, just part of working with third party retailers." is not nearly as clear and contradicts my understanding of the original post.

I think the key phrase from the OP was "sticking with" with reference to FD purchases. Suggests that if you go the Steam route, there would be changes.

Just a heads up it just worked for me. Downloading without issues! I suggest trying now.

Then prove it. Ed who I imagine has more information on the situation than you, is a better source of information.

But based on the available current information, with respect, it is you who is wrong.

Like I said, you'll have to wait and wait for the clarification on the clarification. I'm sure it will come when they're not so busy trying to fix the store and the key handling.

I'm just someone with more than 2100 games & 1600 DLCs owned on Steam, who has over the many, many years I've been there activated hundreds of Steam keys from developers... none of them ever claimed what Ed claimed in that clarification. So I have to assume he misunderstood something to give that reply. His original post is fully in accordance with what game devs always said, even if it's clearly not being understood like that by many of us... needs better wording! It's just that clarification that I think is wrong. We'll see!

are "they" even aware there is a problem ? this thread has gone to the dogs !

No. They are not. They can't read....
/sarcasm off/

How do YOU think? Are they aware that their website was basically down for several hours?
I think they are but I know that sorting problems like that is not an easy task and may take more than 5 minutes....

Greetings Commanders

All EliteDangerous.com store players can now generate a Steam key to add it to their Steam library.

By generating a Steam key all future purchases made with your Frontier account will also be associated with your Steam account. This won't affect how much you pay for the game or for paint jobs, but sticking with the EliteDangerous.com store remains the best way to support ongoing development with 100 percent of your money on future purchases. We especially appreciate it when you buy direct from us, but we're happy for you to play how and where you like. Just enjoy the game, and fly safe Commanders!

Instructions to redeem:

Log into the Elite: Dangerous store.

Go to your account dashboard.

Click on ‘Partner Keys’

Click ‘Claim an Elite: Dangerous’ key.

You can redeem your code by selecting 'Games > Activate a Product On Steam' in the Steam UI.

Note: the key you generate will add Elite: Dangerous to any Steam library but WILL NOT grant access to the game without an existing registered Frontier account and copy of the game. For this reason, please don’t give your keys away to friends! They won’t be able to play without having already bought the game from Steam or the EliteDangerous.com store!

thats awesome but what if we bought a second copy of elite for steam? rather than arefund could we be granted ability to redeem a key and create a second account? Because that kinda blows. But i do understand if you guys dont want to do that for people. thank you for giving people the steam keys.

What stopping you from connecting ED store account to DIFFERENT Steam account than the one that already has game in library?

You're not the only one with a lot of Steam keys etc...and you know what they say about assumptions. The first post would also be in line with what he wrote. Most likely the language used has caused some people confusion.

It would be helpful to ask someone who bought the game on Steam and created an account from scratch.

I seem to remember that the FD store has a section in the "My Account" page that you can use to redeem a key and activate a product/game. Maybe Steam gives you one such key when you purchase the game from them? In your Steam Library, try right-clicking the game and see if it has a "CD Key" option.

If you bought a second copy of Elite just to have it in Steam, then that was definitely out of FDs control. Speak to Steam, see if they'll give you a refund or credit maybe.

I would have thought after registering it you would still have to enter your credentials to get into the game
