News Elite: Dangerous Steam Keys

OK - I seem to be one of the lucky few that have managed to both link my Steam account to Frontier and obtain the Steam key - and it's now downloading on Steam - Magic!. Question... Should I uninstall my standalone version before I get Steam to install it and, if I do uninstall the standalone version, will I lose my SAVE?

I'm unsure as Steam places games under a Steam directory whereas Frontier have placed (by default, I assume) in a very weird place - C:\Users\Me\AppData\Local\Frontier_Developments\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1010

Your save's on the server, don't worry about uninstalling.

there has been an error, contact support -- I've been getting this one, too. Gonna try a different browser.
You'd be better off trying a different day. In all seriousness, the server is under a lot of strain, wait until tomorrow when everything's calmed down. you've already got the game, is it THAT important to grab your Steam key that you have to have it today?

Play through the normal launcher and grab your Steam key tomorrow.

I'm going to be shouted down here but whatever, my opinion.

I personally find it disgusting that valve take a cut from non-digital items such as merchandise. I'm sorry Frontier but that for me would have been a deal breaker and if that was the only deal they offered, I'd have kept the game off steam.

I have no problems with them taking a cut of digital copies of the game but this is too much. imo of course

indeed.... but before we get the pitchforks out (though I am sharpening mine to be ready just in case) I would like confirmation this is the case. Obviously Ed made it sound like it is so, but it just seems utter ludicrus and surely FD would not have gone for that. ESP when games like warthunder have DIFFERENT packages available on their store which are not available on the steam store, and from what i am told valve do not take a cut of gajins store sales, so why would they of frontiers?

I got my steam key, Downloaded it from the start everything went smooth with the login then I try to play the game but the second the Elite: Dangerous logo is shown my game crashes :p. Anyone can help me here?

I'm guessing the key generator is overworked and underpowered for the task of being hammered by hundreds of people at once. This should taper off as more people get their keys and slowly but surely lighten the load for the rest of us.

MOD HAT OFF...

Or just wait a few days.

It's not as if you can't play the game without a steam key.

Oh Yes We cant, some of us cant, the lack of Mod attention in the Technical Forum about the slow download speed and Launcher issues is very astonishing.

Finally someone with some common sense, been thinking this during whole thread.

Bear in mind that the mods are volunteers and have no ability to help with those kinds of technical issues. We try to offer help & advice as we can, of course, but we are limited in what we can do.

Can you tell me what exactly you think forum moderators can do to help you with client technical issues?

So, we have major issues with massive demand for Steam key generation. Not really a big surprise to me. People wanted this. It should have been fairly obvious. But I don't really personally assign blame right now. It'll get done, and Frontier now has a better idea of how many, and how serious, people were about wanting these keys.

If you want a key, or don't want a key, that's your business.

BUT, if you're holding out because of some misconception on how Steam and Frontier are doing business, I HIGHLY suggest you stop. If you WANT your Steam key, Get it. You're not going to be murdering the development of anything by doing so, and in many ways, you might find you are contributing quite a bit to the popularity and exposure of Elite: Dangerous at large.

If you're scared you're taking the bread out of the mouths of starving orphans, or maybe just the next starship, I'd like to point this out, as I, and others, have before.

You do NOT have to buy your microtransactions through Steam. It would be INSANE to assume Steam was getting a cut of Frontier's web-based store. Does Steam own Frontier now? Is Steam now entitled to Frontier's business ledgers? If so, Frontier cut a poor deal indeed.

But the answer is likely... no. No one would make a silly deal like that, and I don't see Steam ever asking for that. Lets remember that Frontier went to Steam, not the other way around.

Let me point you to an example of an existing game and business model.

This is Gaijin's Store for "War Thunder". In it, you see a PLETHORA of packages and items for purchase.
https://warthunder.com/en/store/

Here is what Gaijin offers on Steam:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/236390/

As you can see, their content on Steam is no where near the content they have available on their website. If you want some of that sweet stuff, you go to Gaijin's website. You buy it from Gaijin, and it is linked to your ACCOUNT.

The account that is NOT dependent on Steam. All you're doing now is getting a Steam copy. You still have to log in to YOUR account, where your items are. Stand-alone, Steam Client, it doesn't mater. You're logging into your account, where all your stuff is. In your account. Not in your client, or how you're running it. It's all on servers, no?

So, the idea is, you go to Frontier's store, you log in to YOUR ACCOUNT, and you buy items attached to your account. Which Frontier processes. And that is Their Money and Their Business, not Steams.

I simply can not understand how we would think Steam would get a cut of that. They would not. You're still contributing to Frontier and supporting them without giving a dime to Steam. Frontier can encourage this, just like Gaijin has, by making most shop items available only on the website. However, I suspect that they understand that they'll receive a LOT more revenue by opening it up to the Steam market, which. is. MASSIVE. And they're going to make tons of dough.

However, if you're concerned about 100% of your money going to Frontier, and you don't mind what pains it takes to do so, then buy through their store.

But for the love of Blog, don't deny yourself a key because you think you're causing harm to Frontier. That isn't fair to you, your best interests, and honestly, Frontier in the long run.

They can contact developers and let them know about the issues? Been silent about it its worst then not offering help.

@FuegoTigre

I'm not sure if you've read the whole thread or not, but you seem to not understand everything that has gone on so far. The available information as things stand from people like Ed Lewis (FD) intimates that you are wrong. Right now, it's not a misconception based on what in this thread.
