Elite Dangerous: Vanguards - Arriving 19th August

so can you describe briefly what you think it should look like graphically, I am genuinely interested.
Well not like this. Look, I don't mean to derail this into a discussion about form and function - I'm just saying, this particular design looks like it could have been better. There are sections which stand out: each of the sides are clearly chopped off middle sections of a regular carrier, with little addition to them, they just end in a big flat wall which makes up most of the frontal view of the carrier; the front section contains many of the same large triangular pieces, rotated 90deg and just shifted front and back; the section under the bridge is made up the same small triangular pieces that make up the spine, just rotated and stacked on top of one another; you see the same small triangular pieces bolted on to the sides of the hangar sections... Overall it just feels rushed.

Ship shapes must look interesting enough to make you believe there is a real engineering story behind them. Otherwise if it looks like you could just bolt any two husks of metal together and strap an FSD to them, then purchasing and owning ships looses it's appeal real quick.

I agree it more or less looks like a bridge with a lot of landing pads. Function over form. I think some folks just wished they could for once launch their ships from a tube or something, and with the vast selection of generation ships and megaships out there it should have been easy to, you know, add a habitation ring, science modules and other building parts that would make these hulks look more appealing.

But then again, maybe these will be in cosmetc, arxy upgrades, who knows?

That ship looks ugly.
Sure I couldnt' design and model anything like it but like, all that middle part stuff with the weird pieces, just looks wierd and dont make sense.

What do you want it to look like? I like the design. It's better than what they showed during the livestream in May.

Hi All :)

Ok thanks for the explanation, I have to agree, it does look a bit 'blocky' and maybe when you say 'rushed' I can see your point there as well.;)
I don't see you as derailing anything, this is imo one of the major pieces of the feature, and critical comment is useful in this respect. :)

Yeah, maybe that's just it, function over form. If cosmetics alter anything major to the present design then I'd become quite sceptical of the whole concept, and be wondering if the present concept was deliberately orchestrated with that in mind.🫤

Presently, judging by players / forum comments the overall design is not being that well received !

There is no easy way t say this so i'll just say it.

It has pure functional charm. You start from two premises:
  • you need a lot of landing pads
  • you have a working carrier building kit
So, how do you provide a regular carrier with moar pads? Longer or wider? Toss a coin. And apart from the pad modules, stick on anything else from the standard building kit (engines, crew quarters, workshops, promenade deck) that is required and leave out everything that is not needed (cargo storage). Unlike our ships, the carriers (any type) are not required to operate in an atmosphere, so the shape is not an issue. It could look like an outpost, except that those don't have enough pads 🤷‍♂️

I'm gonna go ahead and call this particular design style "Fleet Carrier Lego".

As previously applied to the Stronghold Carriers already.

PS - also interesting that the level of details shared about a new piece of content is almost on par with a Kinder Surprise egg.

So would something like this just be too boring? Someone help me understand "design" please.

There's a bit more info here about the update:

"Revamped Squadrons system, giving your Squadron management more control and support then ever before:"
  1. A dedicated Squadron Carrier
  2. A Squadron Bank where you can share resources, items and even ships
  3. A reworked Squadron Browser, complete with banners, mottos, ID’s, and even customisable logos!
  4. Squadron perks to benefit your members
  5. …And Much More!
