Was gonna ask if Vanguards is just a new carrier so thanks for this.
I'm brand new to carriers and don't use squadrons, so what is it that existing carriers can't do that this one "fixes"? I mean they can already hold unlimited ships (with instancing, like most things in Elite). So "bigger" doesn't really change much there. Pic indicates it's got exactly double the pad count of current carriers (assuming none on the "underside"). So maybe a bit less instancing for a group, if it even matters. But any other new feature could probably be added/buffed into the existing carriers. So I guess those other new features (ship sharing, etc) will be access-locked to these new carriers instead of being added to existing ones. Maybe with ARX involved somehow...
The only thing that bothers me about the design of the squadron carrier is something common to a lot of spaceships in science fiction - it's been designed with "up" and "down" in mind, even though there's no such thing as that in space. I'd love to see a design that looks like it was drawn by someone who realises that up and down in space is merely a matter of opinion.
The small ships we pilot are designed to fly in atmospheres and land on surfaces, so having a distinct up and down for them makes sense. But carriers never land or fly in an atmosphere.
Do we know that Elite's carriers / megaships never enter atmo? I mean yeah it's not in the game (yet) but that doesn't mean they can't in lore.
Some of the existing ARX carrier models lean a bit toward "up-lessness" with superstructure on both "top", "bottom", or sticking out at odd angles. Reminds me of the Voltron vehicle series / DaiRugger where the carrier Explorer routinely landed on water, submerging the huge underside superstructure (larger than the topside). Because R&R swimming is good for morale
I think tho there'll always be some kind of relative internal "up vs down" in at least some direction, because you gotta separate the rich people from the plebs anyway
Since Squadron carriers required dev time to give it all the new fancy features. Any hope that Fleet Carriers will also benefit from a dev pass?
Lol maybe they'll replace the dead lightbulbs in the hangars
