Today is an important day for me..

Today something huge happened.... today I am no longer obese!

Today I am now overweight.... with a bmi of 29.7

I know its stupid... but this is the first time in many years and it marks the first important milestone in my journey to Slimdependence...

ONWARDS to 'Goal' Weight :D

Fantastic news. :D Really, really pleased for you.

Everyone on here is doing so well.

Keep it up. :D

Ouch

I started ramping up the distances from my usual 10k for the half-marathon (21k) that is in 3 weeks time.
Plan was to do 13k/16k/19k in the weekends before the race and some shorter distances mid-week.

Have told the charity that I was going to raise money for them.

Did the 13k yesterday, making sure I ran slower which I managed, even a bit slower than I intended.

Bad news is that my right knee is now quite painful when walking down stairs. :(
Not sure what I have done, maybe stretched a ligament or something. Going to see the GP I think and have it looked at but not looking good.

@Majere an interesting site with various knee ailments if your interested, theres plenty of them about, but your doctor will know best am sure.

I had something similar last year and like a fool tried running through the pain(cost me three months of running!) had to change to biking(less impact) for that time, i also invested in a knee support from amazon and its excellent, as soon as i started using it i could feel it supporting(highly recommended)

My knee is fine now and back to my running schedule, and on a plus side still doing the biking which i really enjoy now

With any luck it might not be a bad injury you have, and just a few weeks rest perhaps, looks like your doing great with your distances i just hope you can carry it on.

Yeah when the knees complain its time to ease off a little and get the stretching in!! :D

I hope it is nothing but a few days of rest for it and you get back on course ASAP!!

Laid my best 1km lap time tonight.... and boy my left shin is ed at me..

5.40m for 1k... first time i've run a full k non stop... CHUFFED..

I managed a good chunk of the next k too!! SOOOO Happy and sore.

Bath and stretch is on the books for tonight!

Well I could not get a Dr appointment, maybe tomorrow. One of those surgeries where you have to call first thing to get a same day appointment. No booking in advance. And all appointments gone very early.

Might just skip that anyway and jump to a sports massage. Thanks for the link Lone Gunman, some interesting stuff there. Not quite sure which I have, never that good and describing my own pain.

I do have proper running shoes, warm up (maybe not enough) and have been doing this for a year now. I suspect the problem might have been about a month ago when I ran on the seafront that was covered in the stones from the beach.

It is a lot better this evening but will ditch the planned run mid-week, try and get a massage and exam instead and hopefully get out again next weekend if it feels better, or put it off if not.

More hopeful now than I was earlier that I could make it.

Well done 'kow you are cooking on gas now. That is a very respectable time for 1k

IT felt sooo right while i was running, breathing wasn't laboured, the pain wasn't there... and it was as i reached 1.4km mark I just dropped out of cruise speed and WHAM pain...

SO walked a little and then jumped back into cruise and kept it going for a bit longer... and managed a 6m 2nd km, then 7m 3rd km then 9 then 11mins for the last with walking with quite stiff calves..

Stretched them off and all feels a bit achy!!

its a fine line between not pushing yourself enough and too much aint it..

Well stretched out the muscles last night, just a residual pain and ache today..

ALL GOOD

New PB!

10 km in 51:23s!!!

Previous was 55:55s!

Very pleased. Had a rest after sore knees, and did stretching and strength exercises for a couple of days. So rest does pay off! :)

Cowabunga! That is a massive chunk off. Superb.

What exercises did you do withnail?

Gave up on the docs, having a sports massage today but the knee is feeling better every day.

Generally squats, 1 legged with a dumbbell and 2 legged with a viper thing (or my 6 month old son when at home :) ). I do leg presses too.

Also loads of hamstring stretches and use a foam roller.

I've now switched to an upper/lower body four day split and I now know why experienced gym goers are sometimes tempted to skip 'leg day'. Sheeeeeeeesh!

I also do abs on lower day:

15x Leg Raises,
15x Leg Flutters,
15x Crunches,

1 min rest (not between exercises - after the last one).

Repeat three times. That really toasts my abs!!

Does that tiny strap really do the job?

I've been using something similar to this:

Mind you, I've been focusing more on weight training than running, so that's mainly being used for squats. Would the one you linked to support the knee during squats?

The strap i mentioned and use is mainly for running for me, you can pull in the strap very tight and it definitely gave me the support while my knee was getting better, in fact i probably dont need it now(pain all gone) but its like reassurance so i keep wearing it.

I do some weights to but not squats, all fine with machine leg exercises though so it might be fine, i know it dosnt look much to look at, but it really helped me.

The one you put a pic up of looks good and might be better, i would do some review searches(amazon) and perhaps see how they compare.

edit, sorry just reread you already have that strap, again for running excellent, leg machines, still good and no problems.

Either way, if your knee is giving you a bit of aggro, try a knee support for sure guys. I did and I experienced zero knee discomfort whatsoever - it was completely gone.

Well the sports massage was great. As suspected it was soft tissue and the massage as really helped.

It was pretty painful but I don't mind when it is good pain. My quad had a big lump in it and I now know I have something called a iliotibial band (ITB) that was also pretty tight and sore.

Much much better and I even managed a couple of brief 1 mile runs last night with no pain at all.

I have been wearing elastic knee supports but I think I need to develop the stretching a bit more. I think I am going to get a foam roller to help too.

I was given a good working over on Monday... well worth the money.. and has resolved an issue i had with delayed muscle something or other where the muscles tighten and don't relax days after a run meaning it is difficult to run again even after the pain has gone..

That has been resolved and I have some stretches that are CRACKINGLY sore to do.. involving lying on back, bend one knee up and you straighten the other leg keepng the knee locked.

Raise it as far as you can without bending the knee... then slowly move it outwards to the side without lifting your hip off the ground and hold for 20... then straighten out the bended leg and move the straight leg over the lowered leg as far as you can without bending that knee and again hold for 20.. I use a towel holding the corners in each hand, and putting my foot into it to help hold it straight and to support the stretch.

IT IS CRACKING... so no running tonight (Not well) and none last night due to shin pains and knee pains that are no longer here...

SO I am hoping for a PB tomorrow night and I am genuinely EXCITED about it.... I ran for the first time 1km non stop - no rest nothing... and made that 5.40 time... SO I want to extend that run to 2km non stop... then 3km

Then I will hopefully be hitting 30 minutes for 5km :D that will be awesome... HOPEFULLY by April this will be under my belt.. Then its time to maybe do two laps..

The other tip that worked wonders for me... Small steps.. don't run full stretch (I wasn't) but the smaller the step you take, the less strain on the calves and shins... so it helped a lot.

GOD I never NEVER EVER thought I'd be into running... NEVER!!!!!

NEVER!!! Did I say NEVER!!!?!
