Remembering which keys on a full sized keyboard to press is a problem in most games. Press the wrong one in Elite and you might fire a weapon inside a space station, ( done it!
) or jettison a valuable cargo, (done it as well!
)
Redecorating a keyboard is a bit extreme. A nearby list can take time and be misread.
Building a huge console will be expensive, difficult, take up a load of space and be prone to weaknesses with soldering skills.
I found a rather nice number pad on Amazon for under 10 quid. Used some sticky paper to make up a load of labels and reprogrammed the keys in Elite's Game Menu.

As you can see from the images below, the pad is floppy rubber so it doesn't slip around. A similar, more expensive pad could easily be sought out. There's spare keys for later expansion.
I did look at a simple number pad, but that only gave me an option of 19 keys, which didn't leave any for later.
