Fiction Elite : Reclamation

Today's update is live. It's been a year since I Kickstarted a Kickstarter... What was it like at the time? Where did the idea come from? Was I completely confident in the outcome? Did it all transpire as I suspected? How did Elite:Reclamation get off the ground?

All the answers in today's update.

"Those games were fun, but you had no ‘choice’ as to what you did. Despite orders of magnitude improvement in their graphics, most games today have the same limitations."

So true, so true!

Nice post. I've heard the story before, but it's always good to hear again :) Also found out Gimi was the person to first suggest the whole idea - good on you, Gimi! You've triggered an avalanche that has lead to a wealth of fiction being added to the game.

One thing you said, Drew, is that Elite was the first game to come with a novel. Will Elite: Dangerous be the first to come with a whole pack of novels...? This is probably the most fiction-rich game launch of all time.

There are certainly games that have more novels written about then (Dragonlance etc. D&D books), but Elite will most probably beat the record of number of novels published at launch! :)

Really enjoyed reading how it all started for you and the up and down journey, glad it worked out all fine in the end. Like to you knew the precise time 13.39 when you hit your target lol must have been a big relief.

and looking forward to the new kickstarter by Fantastic Books Publishing on the 20th, will look in and pledge somewhere along the line :)

Those books aren't tied into a specific game. Sure, a few of our stories aren't set directly around Elite: Dangerous, but the vast majority are. Tying in with the game's star systems, having story elements appearing in the game, etc. There are examples of games being set in a wider fiction, but not of such a large amount of fiction being built for a single game.

Eh? Advanced Dungeons & Dragons? It is certainly not a computer game, but still a game.

I was thinking video game. But again, those novels are based on a franchise, not a particular title. Same for most of the books on that Wikipedia list. Starcraft might be the only one to claim as large a number of attendant titles for a single game, and obviously they didn't have that on release.

Will be great when we see our books listed on that page :D

Edit: There's no way we can beat Sonic though! I'm guessing that page doesn't even consider the wealth of Japanese Sonic content, including extensive graphic novel series....

Thank you Darren, but this is only partly true. I did suggest it to Drew (as a joke mind you) on the Oolite Forum, but there were others who came up with the same idea separately at about the same time. I don't remember who it was or where it popped up, but I think he was on, or mentioned on, Lave Radio in one of the early episodes (possibly the first Conclave). Also, if not one of us two, someone would have come up with the idea simply because it makes sense (and I say that with a good portion of hindsight).

Nice update Drew as always :)
I've backed your book, not only because it was in elite universe but because I think this book will be cool ;)

The man doth protest too much. Gimi started it from my perspective... and there's no wriggling out of it now! :)

Cheers,

Drew.

Came with a "Home Computer Club" copy of the first book - Dragons of Autumn Twilight. The story goes that the Weis and Hickman trilogy was written based on their weekly AD&D campaign at TSR, which Tracy and Laura Hickman had sold to TSR as a project to get jobs with the company.

The novels came out, then a world setting and adventures for AD&D first edition (1984/1985), then second edition and the computer game (1988).

The Heroes of the Lance game does try to follow the plot of the novel where the limitations of the computer could cope with it.

Ah, that brings back memories. I remember playing Heroes of the Lance back in the early 90's. Quite a decent game if I recall, you could swap between several different characters with varying classes at will. Had no idea there were some books connected with it though.

Wow! that was a nice memory reminder, i loved the Dragon lance Chronicles(they are still my favorite fantasy books)

I collected them all and can see them on my bookcase right now, some of the most addictive cant put down books i ever read! Raistlin the mage was one of my favorites, a great complex antihero character.

The picture on the front cover i actually reproduced from metal figurines from Games-workshop(dragons dwarfs etc) loved painting them and then making a drama scene, dungons, hilltops etc from clay adding various craft stuff and finished off on a wooden plinth(my chippy mate made for me) got loads in my attic gathering dust...good times

Hey there agent Wagar, got a question for you as one loyal imperial citizen to another.
Will there be paperback boxes available through other means once the latest kickstarter upgrade succeeds?
I'm only asking because I do not have a creditcard (and refuse to get one), but do want to support the effort. :)

If you go the kickstarter route you will probably (depending on the level you pledge at, and whether you already pledged on any of the ebooks on their individual kickstarters) get some goodies, so you should try to find a way around the CC thing and pledge, IMHO. I would offer to help myself, but I'm not in the Euro zone, so cannot take a direct bank payment from you. I could do Paypal or Skrill, but they would add additional fees. But surely there is someone in the Euro zone who can help you out.

There will be options after the KS, but I can't comment on whether you'd need a cc to get them. PayPal perhaps?

A poignant moment. This time last year (tomorrow in fact) my Kickstarter was about smash through its target. A year to the day since the point at which Elite Reclamation suddenly went from 'Won't this be great if it happens' to 'OMG! It's funded!'

A year down the space time continuum and the book is pretty much ready and another Kickstarter is running.

Frontier's Alpha is so close it's palpable and they've just released a new Dev video. I've taken a look through that. It's very encouraging, both for the game and the book. A future blog will detail my experiences with the Alpha, so stay tuned!

The Fantastic Kickstarter goes well, and there are some new pledge awards and upgrades to check out.

As usual, it's all on the blog. So have a read and enjoy. Comments very much welcome on the blog as per normal!

... especially comments from folks who backed Drew's kickstarter who have not backed the Fantastic books one. The more we all understand about why people are not signing up, the better placed we will be to correct things, communicate better, and so on, to make sure the hardback/audio books KS is a success.
