Empty galaxy

I think Elite runs a lot of people off, because they find it too difficult to get started, or it isn't their thing. It's far easier now as a rookie, there's a little more hand holding when starting fresh. The grind isn't nearly as bad as it used to be, either. There's a dedicated core playerbase, for sure. I've been flying with and shooting at some people for years lol.

One thing I miss is community goals. Weekly events where the community would gather to meet a cargo/bounty hunting goal. You could participate in them, or just hang out. Rob some trade ships, or outright blow them up. Get in a fight with someone. Dodge people trying to rob/kill you as a trader. Goof off in meme ships. Wing up with strangers, and go bounty hunting, whatever.

I was so cautious about moving from solo to open: now I'm wondering what the fuss is about!

I built a decent ship, got to grips with most of the game mechanics and I'm wondering what's going on in this massive galaxy. Turns out; not much. So this is a notable 'quiet' period with regards content? I was drawn to the game by the news of generation ships, of distant world expeditions and such. Doesnt seem anything like that is going on at the moment. I've been to Guardian and Thargoid sites, seen burning stations, have flung my SRV across undiscovered volcanic landscapes but... it does feel like there could be so much more.

Is this what the next release is going to address?

Frontier for reasons of their own devising don't like to tell us what's coming up in updates most of the time, instead just referencing them when the community starts to get irritable with the state of the game the most they'll say in those instance is that it's "super exciting" and more details to come soon. The last super secret exciting update we got was during the beyond series of updates which were meant to flesh out core gameplay concepts and fix many bugs that had been in the game for a while, we did get new exploration mechanics and core mining which was a positive. The super secret exciting aspect of this update was... space jellyfish/crystals/blobs that do sod all and you're extremely lucky to find once in a 22kly slog to Colonia.

Recently we were meant to get fleet carriers, the update preceding the intended release date of the feet carriers broke the game so badly and caused such an uproar with the community that frontier delayed the release of the fleet carriers, which had already been delayed once about a year ago, so the developers could work on long term bugs that had been in the game a while and will not be appearing, allegedly, until the next paid expansion that's full of super secret and exciting stuff comes out.

So temper your expectations accordingly

I bumped here by a case... but yes, I agree on this. Three months without a CG (even the ones arranged by PMF) is been a lot of time... ok, I reckon the game is huge and it's full of things to do, but for everyone who's looking for some genuine interaction, the lack of CGs is a huge miss!

Frontier's reasons for not talking about updates before stuff that is going to be included is finalized are fairly easy to understand: They don't want to over-promise. And for good reasons. Every time they promised things that weren't ready when an update was due, they got raked over the coals for it. See fleet carriers and ice planet rendering updates for a fine example of this.

No, fleet carriers are still planned for Q2 2020 (i.e. April-June). The paid update is planned for Q4 (October-December). Fleet carriers are part of the free Beyond update (possibly linked to Horizons though, so probably not for base game owners, but since the Horizons update has been available for as little as 5 pounds, is there really any reason for not owning it?)
