Engineering upgrade question

Nah, don't worry about the rng, it's insignificant with engineering.

Materials gathering however...
Most lower to mid tier mats are abundant.
Some of the high tier mats not so much, which is where mat traders come into use.

Also, even low grade engineering makes a big difference to ship performance.

First steps in engineering, Farseer is definately a good starting point.

Can I gather mats in one ship for upgrading another ?
You are guaranteed an upgrade for each time you press the button.

Yes, you can gather mats wherever you are, you never lose them (apparently we carry them in our underpants). It is irrespective of the ship. Lose the ship, you don't lose your mats.

They used to be a lot more random so that you could do 1000 of them and still not get the best possible module, so the term has kind of stuck since then.

Yes, it's a legacy term, maybe it's not chance as I said. Perhaps how much gain you get is a simple function of rep and grade.

FSD range. I now see that after all the procurement of mats and echoes and everything else, after all that’s it’s still a ‘roll of the dice’.

Don't give up! Even if you only do the FSD, and even if you just start with a G2 Increased Range mod it will be worth it, and you'll be hooked.

As long as you don't put so much importance on engineering that you start to grind and kill your enjoyment and enthusiasm you'll appreciate the additional jump, even if it's partially complete.

And I may have caused this by calling it chance. Everyone gets essentially the same progress when engineering. You won't have to worry that you got ripped while I sailed through ya know? The same for all of us.

Extra jump I reckon is the single most useful thing you can get.

Do mat traders sell all mats ? How do I find a mat trader?

Each trader deals in one specific type of materials - raw, manufactured or data.

In-game they usually appear in medium-population systems (1-22 million) with certain economies - Raw are Extraction/Refinery, Manufactured are Industrial, Data are High-Tech. There's a map filter option you can use to find them, but it'll only work for systems you've previously visited, so checking by population and economy is generally easier - alternatively, inara.cz has a "find the closest material traders to a system" tool.

I guess this exercise is for me an experiment as much as anything. I’m having a great time playing the game; Elite Trade status, 1.3 billion cr’sand not a single Engineerd ship. I do however badly want to go to Colonia and ultimately Sag A, so I thought I’d try the Engineer dance with the hope of increasing my FSD range. I now see that after all the procurement of mats and echoes and everything else, after all that’s it’s still a ‘roll of the dice’.
I think if combat is your thing it’d probably be tough to compete w/o engineering.

Every engineered module has exactly the same stats when complete, with the same blueprint.

It's not a big deal at all if you just plan well.

In completing transport board missions there are always three options of getting paid- straight cash and two other choicesof less cash but materials- is this a resource for aquiring engineer-applicable mats ?

Thanks, I’ve been completely ignoring the materials offered until now. I imagine they take up room in your cargo hold- how/ where do you store these items for future use ? I fly a Python as my main transport ship- do gathered mats sit in my cargo hold until I need to use them ? Or ...
Yes, biotech conductors, exquisite focus crystals and modified embedded firmware are the most valuable.
