ENOUGH!

To be fair to FDEV, most games I play are incredibly buggy and lack QA. The bar is set a lot lower now that games can be updated over the internet.

Agreed. Which is why I get so frustrated with it. They use the ability to easily patch it later as an excuse and a crutch to not have to test adequately before they release to public. They use their customers as unpaid testers and debuggers. It's unacceptable.

I think many people don't understand that the bugs AREN'T usually "easily fixed". You need to be able to investigate the occurence, successfully and repeatedly replicate it and then come up with a solution in code that doesn't break ten other things in the process. When several people encounter a bugged out mission now and then, it isn't exactly easy to pinpoint, no matter how loud or long they moan.

Don't forget this isn't an Assassin's Creed or something. Missions, as well as most of the game are proceduraly generated. That's a LOT of code to go through to find a system glitch, you can't just say "Okay we just place this NPC here instead of here and everything's dandy"

Oh beautiful, and how do I find those POIs? For sure FD has had the cuteness to put them on the planetary map. Oh, noo. They didn't.
Tell me, why should I find workarounds for bugs that are around since years and have been reported since years and never been fixed? Better to focus the development resources on weapon colors, paintjobs and bobbleheads I guess...

Fly at or above 2Km and the POI will appear as a Blue Circle on your sensors. No bug as i can see, just some missing information from your side and, admittedly, not proper information from FD. (Mission description could and should be improved)

No, you can shoot them with dumbfire missiles. I can tell you're pretty frustrated, so here goes.

-Buy a light, small ship. The Eagle or DBS are excellent for these missions.
-Go to the target system and scan the nav beacon to get a mission update (this will prevent 99% of missing kills frustration).
-Go to the target settlement, anywhere between 10-100 km outside of it.
-Use your PgUp key to zoom your sensors out to max.
-Fly at approximately 3km altitude. If you go below 1.8km the POIs will disappear
-POIs will show up as blue circles. The closer you get, the larger they will get.
-At the edge of the POI circle, throttle down to 75% and just glide through it. You can pitch down to 45 degrees if you want. Usually I just make a pass and turn around.
-Some POIs can be very easy to spot from the air (buildings), some can be very difficult (wreckage).
-When you do find the POI, give it a real low pass at about 50-100m to alert the skimmers. Don't go too low, or the skimmers may pop up and hit you (bad thing, has a reverb cascade effect)
-Once you have visual on the skimmers, pop them with some dumbfire missiles.
-Rinse repeat until you have met your mission objective.

Alternatively you can do it in an SRV... which the mission description explicitly states as a probable mission requirement.

Repped for the patience you show on explaining the game mechanics, even if OP seems to be the case of "no worst deaf than the one that doesn't want to hear"

Sure, but debugging something isn't as simple as you're making it sound.
1. Test broken feature
2. Go to start point in code (a developer will know (even vaguely) where this is)
3. Set a break point
4. Step-through the code
5. Debug

The issue is priority and severity; I suspect the Assassination mission bug is likely low on both - which is why it hasn't been addressed yet; much more important things to change and implement.

lol - In OP's defense, the game can be ridiculously frustrating at times. Especially when you're trying something new :)

I have a wild shot theory about follow on missions - they got triggered if you have very high rep with faction. Almost it's like "ohhh right it is you, we have another task for ya". Might be observational bias, obviously.

I always seem to get allied with every faction in my Base Of the Moment! And they all give me follow on missions. So Yeah. Right on!

OP - not sure what your problem with assassination missions are, but they work perfectly for me. Not had a bugged one yet. Suggest you raise a ticket with FD if you are having problems.

You gotta be kidding. Don't get me wrong, they aren't 'broken', but they are HELLA buggy.

1) You could be sent 1m light seconds and the payout will be no different, I know some say this is working as intended, which may be so, I still think it's supercrap.
2) The mission USS when you finally arrive could pop up in 2 seconds or 15 minutes. I can usually get it to pop within 5 mins these days, but it's stupid and annoying. Especially when the body is a star, it seems to be particularly difficult to find the sweet spot for the spawn.
3) About 1/3rd the time you are sent to 'Find a contact'.
3a) The contact is often not there when you first arrive, necessitating either a log off/on, or a quick trip to normal space then supercruise again.
3b) If the contact IS there when you first spawn, it's a dash to get away from the star before they fly past you and drop out inside the star's corona, again necessitating a respawn via either logging or drop SC, go back in again, repeat.
3c) The contact ALWAYS, ALWAYS without fail sends you back to the original system.
4) If you get tailed by 'Incoming Enemies' they are usually stronger than the mission target itself, and it can often happen that if you stop to fight an incoming enemy, that the target will drop as well, or vice versa. To deal with this, you can go back to supercruise where the 'incoming enemy' will interdict you and you can deal with them, but when you do that, 9 times out of 10, the next 'incoming enemy' is spawned, and you get a repeat of the first scenario. Basically, it's best to sit around and wait for the incoming enemies to attack you one by one, then complete the mission. In the unlcuky case that both the target and one of the incoming enemies are hunting you in supercruise, you may unavoidably have to fight 3 full strength enemies. This is rare but is in fact the worst complaint, because it renders the mission very difficult to complete in anything except your tankiest combat ship (I tend to do assassinations in a courier, which should definitely be an option).
5) It still frequently occurs for over 7 months now, that the target has a duplicate, which drops in after the fight begins. They arbitrarily pick a side, sometimes helping you kill your target (their alter egos), before turning on you. Sometimes you have to fight both together.
6) Bonus complaint...Combat missions should not spawn with cargo rewards.

They are really buggy. I haven't even read the OP and the rest of th ethread, but I will now...

Skimmers missions bugged (you are asked to kill skimmers in a base that doesn't have skimmers), assassination missions bugged (target not present in the timeframe and place where it should have been, so you waste time running around, jumping in and out the instance, system, whatever... nothing changes!).

Why should I lose time trying to increase my reputation with a faction, if I follow missions doomed to be failed, which will decrease my reputation with those factions?

If you look for those bugs, you find posts of 2016! Seriously, why all this? Frontier, it's time you sell the game and change your job. Shame on you ALL.

[down]

do the skimmers have to be at the base? have you tried either flying 1.5km high in your ship and looking for blue blobs, then scanning around for them, or landing in your SRV and using your scanner...... i have not done a skimmer mission in some time but that was how it worked when i did. no need to face the wrath of the base by attacking directly (i agree the wording of the missions should be clearer)

Ok I read the thread now. Some of you are clearly in denial about the current state of elite. Let's look at the list of games installed on my laptop right now, and rate them for bugginess...

CoD BO2 - no bugs that I'm aware of
Superflight - no bugs so far
Kerbal Space Program - apart from the kraken, pretty stable.
Elite dangerous - quite buggy
Grand theft auto V - once in a blue moon has a minor bug.
Doom - no bugs that I'm aware of
Project cars 2 - no bugs that I'm aware of
Borderlands 2 - couple of very minor bugs related to continuity which are basically players doing things in the wrong order.
Assetto corsa - no bugs I'm aware of
Dirt 3 - no bugs that I'm aware of
Dirty rally - no bugs that I'm aware of
Warhammer total war - no bugs that I'm aware of

Doesn't look that good for frontier, does it, let's be honest. Elite is, by a country mile, the most buggy game I play.

Dude, give FD a chance, beyond is coming and improvements have been promised across the board. Let's all wait and see.

I hate to promote whine threads but FD get given repeated chances to fix holes in the game like this.

It's like they don't bother listening to bug fix requests unless the forum is practically staging a revolt over it. Fix half the missions in the game? Nah, most people won't notice. Players worked out how to roll a G5 mod at the cost of a G1 mat? Nah, we'll ignore them reports. It's important, but we'll ignore it.

Wait, the forum has been informed of the 5-1 bug and burning torches are being lobbed at Brett? Well why didn't you say; we'll have a fix by Thursday.

They do, according to mission description. And they were used to do. Now it happens you find bases without skimmers.

FWIW, when you find a base that does have skimmers, these are decent money. Shoot the two or three that are patrolling, then land, log off, log on again, take off again, shoot the two or three new ones, repeat.

Of course what should happen is that the skimmers should keep respawning from a 'Security Area' (the same way we print fighters in our fighter bays), and the challenge should be to stay in the area long enough to kill the required number. Rather than fly around the structure up to 100km out finding POSes which may or may not have 1 or 3 skimmers when you need to kill 40. It's like a bad joke.

Exactly. I do assassination missions all the time, I don't recall any issues. Maybe the OP doesn't realise you need to either scan the Nav beacon or use a discovery scanner (which it actually instructs you to do in the mission brief!)?
