I agree, we'll probably see more players for a while, just like we did after the launch of FCs. We'll probably see another big boost to the player base with the Odyssey launch.
People proclaiming this game is dead obviously weren't around a year ago, when a hollow square in a Capital system was a rare sight.
Yes, ED does tend to push new players away due to the steep learning curve, but with every new rush of players we get a decent chunk of them to stick around. And now that Fdev are being more open to community feedback ED's future is looking brighter than it has since I started playing.

Also, for the ones that are actual new players, they have to retain those players. That's the tricky part.
Unfortunately, having never been a newbie during the newbie system days (last a newbie back in 2015 I think!) , I don't have a base line, but when I flew around in my shiny new poorly spelled CMDR, there were SO MANY SIDEWINDERS. 100s of them, in every station, supercruise, everywhere.
Chat was non stop, asking questions, people offering help, it was cool.
How many are alt accounts, I can't be sure, but how many actual newbies will stick through the steep learning curve and become a regular player?

I wouldn't say steep learning curve so much as steep Engineer grind, but maybe that's just me. YMMV
Anyway, best advice I'd offer when starting out is to take time learning the controls and setting them up the way you like.
Set up my alt.
The starter zone was absolutely stuffed with, well, new starters. The comms was busier than I've ever seen it even at the most hectic CG with a constant stream of newbie awe and queries. Came across only one other veteran with alt account. Of course, this is completely subjective, single experience, but yes, as expected, a lot of new players incoming at the moment.
We were all new once. We are a welcoming and compassionate community.......now where did I put my FDL (joke).

Afaic the base game and horizons is pretty solid now.
I can imagine how awesome (and intimidating!) it must be for new players, esp those with VR.

Seemed to be a few vets around the starter systems last night, several people answering questions. That should give a good first impression, at least until they leave the starter systems and run into the people hanging around nearby...
Yeh, most will probably do a weeks worth of mining, buy loads of fleet carriers with enough upkeep to keep 'em going for the rest of the century, clog up loads of system maps and then moan on the forums about Mining nerfs nor being fair and whatnot then move on to something else.
I will, of course, be posting entitled threads about why can't I have Odyssey for free on my free account ... let's face it, the creche sector noob bar (if there is one) would be a very interesting place !
Speaking of, who is the mastermind behind this - Epic or Frontier?
I'm surprised there isn't a thousand threads complaining about how we all deserve some sort of rebate because we paid for the game (some of us multiple times) and now other people are getting it for free. Remember the outrage over Horizons going free for the base players?

If its true that you can play Odyssey without a ship, as long as the end justifies the journey we will get a whole load of new players completely....until their passenger ship gets blown up and they cant do anything about it, maybe have a go at the turrets....
