Game Discussions Escape from Tarkov

I saw this several years ago and followed with interest on and off since.

Recently decided to try it out. Love it!

I never really got on with the likes of PUBG and DayZ et al. On the surface this game is uttered in the same sentence and that does EfT a disservice really.

This is a very deep and complex game that has incredible tense and fascinating gameplay. The developers have done a great job on weapon realism, ballistics and wounding mechanics. Looting and inventory management is great also with a complex player economy in the background that's almost a game in itself. The ability to take over, upgrade and maintain your own offline hideout again is a nice addition.

You have 2 choices at the main screen to either spawn as your own player made character (PMC) or as a randomly generated Scav with random gear. Spawning as your PMC goes toward leveling that character who can loot and keep everything you find at the end of the session, Spawning as a Scav gives you no player leveling but you can transfer all the kit you find to your PMC assuming you escape. In session you'll find up to 14 players on huge detailed maps alongside AI Scavs. The AI scavs will attack you as a PMC, but will leave you alone if you spawn as a random scab (unless you decide to attack them first).

I cant think of a game let alone an FPS online shooter that makes me think like this one does. Planning your kit and then in session planning your escape.

The game is still in beta but it's very polished in all the ways that matter. Devs are quick on improvements and patches too.

If you have any interest in this sort of game (might not be many here in that catagory) I'd urge you to have a go.

Its brutal!

I play it from time to time, I'm not too good at it. But it's...tense. Incredibly suspenseful. When it comes to firefights this is the best shooter when it comes to moment to moment gameplay. Sound design is so real it's frightening. All the meandering around the map for 20 minutes without encountering anybody can conclude in the most incredible intense minute. Or even second. It's the build up, and the atmosphere that makes it fun for me.

I'm not good either really but it's all practice and such. It's all about being patient and keeping your eyes open, getting your drop on people when possible. I love those moments though, I see someone in mid distance that hasn't seen me, take my time weighing up what sort of gear he seems to have, the immediate situational factors like cover and possible flanks, has he got friends with him somewhere?? All this goes through the mind and a decision to proceed is made or discarded.

Very tense stuff, very engaging.

I saw few gameplay videos on it ad does look appealing, lots of details put in to your weapons and such. Keeping my eye on it. Also, there was some issues/drama with the developer and youtubers at some point, not sure how it resolved :)

There was a recent kerfuffle about the devs not making women characters but as usual the media jumped on it and called the devs out as all sorts.

The game itself is great, absolutely no hand holding. The wiki is your best friend though try not to lean on it too much.

Different one and sadly less funny. The developer was trying to nuke the YT channel of one of the bigger fans for criticizing the slow development. Kerfuffle nevertheless.

I'm still playing the heck outta this one. Amazing game if you are into realism combat. I've been playing about 3 weeke and I'm completely hooked in it despite thinking it maybe wasnt for me. The intensity is fantastic, this isnt a run and gun Call of duty game, it demands you think on a level different to that type of game.

Here is a video by a favoured tuber who makes great guides and content explaining the game.

Been hearing about this game non-stop from a guy at work.
Not sure i'd have the patience for it, but it sounds very interesting.

I suppose it depends what you like in your games. I've found it very engaging and deep for what's essentially a shooter game. It's worth keeping one eye on if you like any sort of online shooter games.

I'm also a member of an online community that plays it regularly so can provide lots of support to anyone that might fancy trying it out

Is it possible to play fully as PvE with decent ai baddies possibly with optional coop or is it PvP MP at heart

It's PvPvE. Basically how it works. Different maps have different player counts, but let's say it's 16. Anywhere between 8-16 players either solo or in groups will spawn right at the beginning. Those players are so-called PMC. Private Military Complex operators. Those players bring their own gear into the match, which will very likely be lost if said player dies. There is an insurance system, but it's not what you'd call reassuring. Second group of enemies are so-called scavs. Aka scavengers. They're sort of disorganized bandit types, but they will not attack each other on sight. Those can be either players or AI. Certain amount of them under AI control spawns at the beginning of the game, including "bosses". Heavily geared and armed group leaders with escort, and lots of expensive equipment on them. Players can spawn as scavs throughout the whole game up to last 15 or 10 minutes, as far as I remember. When you chose to play as a scav you risk nothing, you are given random gear that is often quite low quality. Otherwise, rules are the same for everybody - get loot, get out alive. It's up to your Mk.I eyeball to determine who is an operator, who is the scav, and who to shoot. No markers, no map. Just eyes, ears, and sometimes brains when it's not drowning in adrenaline :)
This all may sound confusing, but trust me - it's much simpler than it sounds. Could watch a guide from somebody who can express themselves more clearly than I do. I did my best. Hope it helps :)

P.S. As to AI baddies being "decent". It ranges. From completely inept, to being one-hit kill snipers from 500m away.

Thanks for the thoughts... it sounds a great game but probably not for me...... These days I just dont enjoy anything PvP related which isnt with friends.

cheers

I downloaded a mod for this which lets you play 100% single player PvE. It emulates the server on your machine so the persistence works and you get to keep your loot. It's great for me because I've been wanting to play it for ages, but don't really like playing PvP with randoms

I hadn't heard of this mod personally. Does the loot transfer into your online competitive play? If so I'd be careful using it, I'm fully sure that you'd get an account ban for something like that.

It's not something I'd use anyway, having the people in it is what the game is all about for me even though I usually try to avoid other player contact unless I have to.

You dont need to play this with randoms either, there are loads of great communities surrounding the game with virtually zero toxicity. The game tends to appeal more to mature gamers because of its complexity and harshness.

No it's completely separate from your online profile, so it doesn't get you banned online. you basically run a server emulator on your PC and connect to that, all the progress is saved locally.

There is enough intensity for me getting shot at by AI I can't see without dealing with real players

Anyone wants to try it search for justemutarkov

There is a bit of setup involved, it also supports it's own mods. It even emulates the player Flea market, although you aren't bartering with real players

I'd heard something about that last post nothing solid though to add.

Apparently the current tasks we do in game are merely filler and side task stuff. BSG are making a proper set of storyline missions taking you from Streets all the way through the other maps to escape at the airport terminal. Not sure how that's to be implemented but there was mention of the whole damn thing going open world, then that got dismissed but not in any way definitively by BSG.

If you ever do want to play in a group with some mature folk to learn the online ropes, let me know and I'll get you onto our discord. It's very much late wipe now so not many playing but when it wipes again it'll be packed.
