ETA on Space Legs?

It matured into fine vinegar ;)

(That particular sentiment is from Sept 2012..., and suggests there was an intended order to the LEP roadmap)
Wow that's... interesting. I've never seen that befor. I've always heard that space legs was just something the internet just assumed fdev would try to do and there was no confirmation they ever specifically said they would. Now I know.

I love that part talking about the dark humor. Lol. I guess they did implement that only they are ones laughing at us.

Oh yeah, it’s not just some mass fan hallucination ;). FDev have said a fair amount on it. Pretty much pre-sold it with the LEPs.

Chances are, as long as the game has some juice in it, they’ll have a stab at some Legs & Atmos DLC. (Resourcing for this DLC ain’t bad. Should be something half-decent by the end. Might even make up a bit for The Great Abandonment, and the shonkiness of Seasons. If you like the idea of Legs that is ;))

Have they ever actually promised legs? AFAIK it's just an idea that got tossed around.

Unless I missed it, they haven't said anything about what the New Era will actually be.

Not promised, no. Roadmapped, discussed enthusiastically as a planned DLC expansion, and detailed in lifetime pass marketing material & at the point of sale?

Yes ;)

True. Detective work does suggest that Legs is the most likely candidate for the DLC though.

Hello,

It's been 5 years now. Can Dev's please comment? 2020? 2022? Even a rough timeframe would be much appreciated.

Cheers

There is a process here.

First they need to build up hype by announcing a time when they will announce a date for some reveal. That reveal will of course just be an announcement of a date in which the real reveal will come. If you're lucky, this is the point in which some timeframe for legs (assuming they are happening) will become apparent.

Yeah, this kind of thing is why I don't take marketing seriously.

It's interesting that Braben gave ship damage modelling as an example of how they were paving the way for legs. All these years later, and the Anaconda is still the only ship with those damage models. So I guess we'll have to wait for all ships to get those damage models before we can hope for legs ;)

I did like the idea until FCs came out. Now I dont have any fait in them to do something intuitive and straightforward without throwing in some off the wall crap noone wants and makes no sense at all.

Yeah I get the design fears. Ultimately the DLC has had ‘the majority’ of the devs on it since approx Jan 2019 though, and will have had an uninterrupted 2.5 year run all told to knock up some actual mechanics / content. All the stuff we’ve been getting in the meantime has been the work of a skeleton crew seemingly, working in the standard Seasonal fashion for the most part. Not sure one predicts the other.

(If anything the crapper the resourcing for Carriers, the more there might be on the DLC ;))

Did you see the disaster of Fleet carrier? They have worked 2 years on it and look the result: at this point legs is defintly out of their capability.

They claimed to have mothballed Carriers when they got pushed initially. At minimum they’re not the result of 2 years straight work. Or the work of ‘the majority’ of the team, as with the DLC. It’s genuinely a bit hysterical to say: Small team did this, therefore big team can’t do anything ;)

Possibly not worth extending beyond the proof of concept until there’s actual gameplay to go with it?

(Some of the stuff they’ve added, seemingly as Legs foundations, are nuts enough as it is, given the associated gameplay is still just a future-dream ;))

I don't know man, I've been wanting those damage models for their own sake for a long while now, and I think the community would be very happy if we got that, legs or no.

According to a leaked roadmap The Next Era will feature:
  • Base building
  • First person shooter style gameplay
  • Thargoids in the flesh
There is no mention of the ability to land ships on atmospheric planets, which is impossible in both the core game and the Horizons expansion. Many fans hope there will be landable planets with basic atmospheres. Also In October 2019, Frontier left a reference on the ARX website's metadata tags about cosmetics for buildings, weapons and SRVs. It was removed when people found it. Believe it or not is your business, leaks were also confirmed by the release date of zoos

The only thing I don't understand is why the hell they've been silent for YEARS and still do it

Sorry Golgot .... not Sept 2012, that was Ashley's join date (yes, look at the linked post again)
The post was actually from April 2013.

Also, they could not have been talking about Elite: Dangerous in Sept 2012 when the kickstarter launched in November 2012 .... I should know, I was looking on this forum when David Walsh announced it.

Ah whoops, nice one, fixed!

For cosmetic reasons?

(As far as I know they’ve never floated an actual damage model to go with them that would impact flight gameplay etc)

Space legs would not be viable without cubicle 3.And who wants to sprint the length of a carrier to reach it? A truly immersive experience. The horror. The horror.
