Newcomer / Intro Etiquette in open play

Where should one park their ship when finished playing for the day if not in a hangar?

Wherever you like - your ship disappears when you do - it will reappear where you left it the next time you start up.

I usually leave the game in the hangar apart from SRV trips and when out in the black.

Your ship doesn't "hog" a pad / hangar when you save to menu or desktop - the ship isn't there waiting for you.

Awesome, thanks all. I'm not a 100% confident flier yet. If I accidentally scrape up another CMDR's paintwork on station exit, am I likely to get the crap lasered out of me or are people generally understanding with beginners?

Nah, you'll be alright. If you're flying something big, just be careful when going through the slot.

Enjoy Open, OP. I started out as a dedicated Soloist. I ventured into Open, and it has been great. If you meet any hostile CMDRs, be prepared to figure out quickly that you're not as hot a combat pilot as you think you are. It's not a foregone conclusion that they are all that hot, either, but there are some aces out there. Pretty hard to run into them unless you're looking for it, though.

Also... regarding stations. Don't speed. If you're speeding and someone else runs into you, destroying their ship, it's a death sentence. A favorite tactic of griefers at popular places.

Oh, also, watch this and take it in. It will potentially save you some rebuys on the chance that you do run into any hostiles.

There is No etiquette in open...Good Manners are something else.

1 . Expect to be interdicted whilst playing in open

2. If you get interdicted DO NOT shoot first unless you’re in a anarchy system.

3. To evade an interdictor, before you actually move away from the star towards a station, go to the nav panel and highlight a neighboring system, don’t select it though unless you’re interdicted.

4 . Always submit, that way your Fsd cools down quicker. Then go to nav panel and High Wake out. NEVER low wake , your assailants will simply chase you down.

5. NEVER combat log, there is no need if you follow the Advice above.

6. Last but not Least. Open Play is far less scary than some people feel, you can go days and travel 100s of light years and never see another player. Other Times depending on where and when you’re online , it can be like the grand central. You soon learn what to watch out for and where to avoid.

Blaze your own trail, do what you want to do, and go where you want to go..That’s the freedom we enjoy.

Fly safe

Never had problem

I play in open all the time and haven't had any issues. Not in cgs or any other massive player environment, I grant. Im seeing more people in my neighbourhood lately and I admit I run as fast as I can if they are lining up, but I'm more worried about trying about trying to figure out hotas binds if any of them actually try talking to me :)

Since I'm only a t7 I'm hoping if they catch me they'll give me more time than the 10s an npc gives me before they start blowing me away :D

As stated before by the time you reply to an o7 they will have left, sometimes you get an o7 back and sometimes it will get you killed. Its quite random

Propper etiquette as far as I have seen is to say absolutely nothing then open up on the other cmdr with the goal to utterly destroy them within 20 seconds.
It is viewed as exceptionally rude not to shoot down unarmed traders.
Or go to mobius and have some fun with other people.

regarding 'o7' etc., can I put a disclaimer on my ship, for others to read, something along the lines "sorry for not responding your greetings, but by the time I finish typing you will already have left the system, o7"

I hope nobody considers this 'rude' but it happened a couple times since I went open (only recently) that the game tells me 'could not deliver the message, recipient unknown'. It's hard typing greetings while I'm on the final approach to something :(

It's possible using VoiceAttack to output a range of standard messages to the comms panel. I can say "Message greeting" which will output "O7" to the targeted commander. During a trading Community Goal when I'm in a Cutter, I warn people that a big ship is using the access corridor with "Message Inbound" and "Message Outbound" which will broadcast "Cutter inbound" and "Cutter outbound" respectively".

I suppose you might also set up "I'm going to boil you up" or "Very well, you choose death" or whatever suits your style of play.

Ive heard of this happening but its rare, never experienced it myself.
Yes it does happen but it is a) rare and b) in most cases avoidable with knowledge of techniques used.
.
Having said that I rarely go to a CG now as my rebuy wipes out any profit I might make and generally I can make more money staying where I am. I did take part in on of the station rescues though and had no problems despite there being a lot of people around.

I usually greet anyone I see with ‘o7’. Often it’s completely ignored. Other times, it starts something positive (like the Commander last week who told me I was the first person who ever said hello to him).

That said, I also assume everyone is going to gank me and will work to keep anyone who is a threat off my tail. Keeps the game interesting. The stress real. This ain’t no Trucker sim. ;)
Why 07?

Comms are hampered by previously mentioned factors, also the permission to receive direct messages from other players must be turned to on as well.

I've gotten comms from players that I'd like to return but once you're out of system the only option is to send a friend request and you should only do that carefully.

Sometimes I find myself at a station spending a lot of time in the hanger tinkering with my ship, finding my next job, etc so can you tell me how long is to long to stay in the hanger when in game?

I don't think you can set an exact time. In a large station, it's not really a problem. If it's an outpost, especially a medium pad, then I feel if you are doing more than quick things like buying and selling, switching to solo whilst in the station is best. It will all depend on how busy the station is. If you are the only one whose entered the system in 24 hrs you are probably ok :)
