Expansions: BGS Guide Best Current Thinking

Jane, we've had expansions that have skipped and it's either down to expanding population being too small for a large population or a large population ignoring a small population and going for a large population. We have also had a double expansion where a medium population expanded to 2 small populations.

I'd also add that some systems may be reserved and that's why they are missed, but missing so many? That is weird.

Just had an expansion of 31.56 without an investment.

The previous expansion was 34.27 also without an investment, though my assumption then was it used an unused investment that was followed by an alternative expansion out of a different system.


There are 15 or so closer systems with at least space and no retreats to consider.

Whats the difference in coordinates of the systems? i did a check on a similar expansion we had a while back and it turned out all the closer systems skipped were outside of a 40ly cube centred on the expanding system, we skipped 6 seemingly closer systems. The system we expanded to was inside the 40ly cube

Edit: Pretty confident about the 40ly cube! I will bet 10 bgs transactions for your faction that all the available systems you skipped are outside the cube and the one you expanded to is inside

Whats the difference in coordinates of the systems? i did a check on a similar expansion we had a while back and it turned out all the closer systems skipped were outside of a 20ly cube centred on the expanding system, we skipped 6 seemingly closer systems. The system we expanded to was inside the 20ly cube

difference is 18.0625 / 17.875 / 17.75, that fits if you use a 40ly cube instead of a 20ly radius sphere for the expansion

check the others, if one of the deltas is more the 20 then its outside the cube

It works if expansion is in a cube and not a sphere, i checked the first 3 closer systems available last night and they are all outside the cube.
I will contact you tonight when i get back from work for the details on all the other systems you skipped, i want to check them too!

Yes it should, but i've had at least one occasion when it didn't

case is looking pretty good for a 40ly cube and explains a lot of the 20ly+ expansions seen over the years!

Since switching to cubic in May I've not had any reports of unexpected expansions in Colonia, and it explains various historic cases perfectly.

So percentage to trigger expansion must round up. We recently had and expansion trigger without technically hitting 75% (although it was close ... 74.7%). Not sure if this is known so I figured I’d share.

Are you sure, wouldn't an expansion after a investment have taken you to the system 20.72ly away?

Interesting info. I've got nothing to add since the last expansion just skipped over an Invasion thanks to a recovering war on that day.
Only odd bit is it jumped 20.98 ly for the destination, but that cube thought has me wondering some on it. Sometime I'll need to check it more detailed.
