Expedition Idea

So I had an idea for an expedition: one involving more classic exploration.

Specifically, I want to start one with no carriers, no engineering, no Guardian tech, no SRVs and no synthesis or boosts outside of emergencies.

Back to basics, just stock ships and fellow commanders exploring the Galaxy, like it was years ago ... or at least as close as possible, can't go back to the old exploration system completely after all.

I was planning to start at Lave, for historic reasons ... and end at the Dragon's Head Nebula. The following sectors nearby have been barely explored:
  • -3, 9 (Pru Aim and Prae Eaec)
  • -2, 9 (Eodgorsts and Eidairld)
  • -3,10 (Blea Aescs and Clookia)
So I think a month long survey of them is warranted. We could probably launch on the first Saturday of October, got a route planned that goes from Lave to the Box Nebula with a 4 waypoints at POI in between. I plan 1 week between all but the last before the Box (which will be 2 weeks) for travel time and sightseeing. In all, I expect 6 weeks travel time to the area before we can really get started.

I also plan on having meet-ups every Saturday at each Waypoint, and I'm considering opening a Discord server so we can coordinate and share information in real time. After the box Nebula, I plan on giving each sector named a 5 day sweep, prioritized by system mass (highest first) and excluding Brown Dwarves + T Tauri when possible.

Still debating on what the group return plan will look like, I tend to leave that up to what people want.

I also welcome any Fuel Rats and Hull Seals who might be interested in joining, especially Seals since I am one (ARF!)

So, anyone interested in joining me?

You might want to add some more info if you want to get ppl interested/excited, e.g. how many days do you plan for the trip there, will there be events/meetings along the way, anything about the return? What focus, goals and protocols are involved in the survey and how will that be organised? Additionally, I suggest you mention the actual sector names, as those pairs of numbers don't identify individual sectors (AFAIK) - maybe rather a stack of sectors?

Well, you've pretty much disinterested 99% of the games explorers. Nobody is going to give up their Guardian FSD's to fulfill the mission parameters. You might be hard pressed to find a few willing to leave srv's behind, though.
But I'd add that no fuel rats are permitted to provide services should fuel become an issue.
The very notion of nerfing those two expedition parameters alone is pretty passe' for most folks.
I'm hoping you will get at least 3-4 players to join the crippling challenge.
For me, I apologetically pass. I'm just not man enough.

Personally, for the "retro" feeling, I'd limit ships to 35-40 ly jump range only. That was the range of Asps and paper Anacondas back before Engineering. But if somebody wants to explore in a 35 ly Mamba, why not? It'd be pretty much the same difficulty as it was back then. (Well, except having less internals.) But...

I'll stick with pros and those who want a real challenge. :)
In that case, head for the sparse inter-arm areas. If I'm seeing your waypoints right, you're headed into higher star density ones? There's no challenge in that, no challenge in navigating through them, you just have to make more jumps than usual.
Try navigating through to the Southern edge directly along the meridian, that should be a good challenge. The Northern protrusion of Kepler's crest aligns with it nicely.

Oh, and don't forget that at the very first, the route plotter had a 100 ly jump range! Soon increased to 1,000 ly though, and that's what we had for a long time before it was redone and had the 20,000 ly range.

Except the rims are mostly explored, and I want to do more than revisit an area that has been picked clean

Can't really enforce that tho, just like I can't switch back to the old honk, target and fly around system.

Same goes for engineering, I can easily tell if someone has engineered their ship, not so easily what the actual jump range is.

I suppose I could have people submit a coriolis link with their outfitting and engineering, but even then it would still sort of be an honor system.

Do note that I was talking about the "sparse inter-arm areas", not the rim. The two are quite different, and not all of the inter-arm rifts are as heavily explored as the extreme edges (the rim) are.

You could also check out their jump range by looking at their EDSM flight log. Which would require those to be uploaded and public, of course.
But in the end, if you wish to restrict what people can use, it'll always be some sort of an honour system. After all, they might land on carriers, switch modules, switch ships and so on.

Any particular sectors you're thinking of?

Probably still going to follow my flight plan this time for this one, got a couple people already interested and it will be a good practice run, but I'd love to do something more serious afterwards.

...I started to play at 3.3.
During first couple days I made "great" ship which could jump 15ly or so and went to Polaris. Took full playing session to go. To find it is permit locked :D
...so that was enough of "retro" for me.
