Exploitation dangerous

I don't know if this would work in ED or not. Probably not

Well, it would definitely need some radical changes.

As I point out any time I have a pretext to, there cannot be deterrence without consequence and ED, as it is, doesn't provide much opportunity for the latter.

Whether or not this happened in significant numbers, this is clearly a possibility with FC jump mechanic.

This could be resolved with a pilot transfer mechanic, where you could pay to return to any port you have visited. Transport into a sidey if you haven't got the cash. We already have the ship transfer mechanic. We already have the "I died - get sent back to last station" mechanic. It is internally inconsistent to not have a pilot transfer mechanic.

I am stealing the title from the Hull Seals reddit (no link, just google it).

I chose to make this an independent public service announcement, so here goes:

It has come to my attention, that pilotes fresh out of the Academy have been tricked into what can best be described as indentured servitude by a "get rich quick" scam involving Fleet Carriers and short range mining ships.

The scam goes as follows:

The new pilot is approached by a "helpful" veteran player with access to large funds and a fleet carrier.

The new pilot is given the means (possibly through favourable trade) to obtain and equip a small or medium mining ship. Crucial here is that they are asked to downgrade the FSD and not informed about fuel scopes, as "transport will be provided".

The new pilot is then asked to land on a fleet carrier that will take them to their destination.

Once the pilot has disembarked, they are now stranded in a system far away from the Bubble with no means of getting back on their own. The pilot makes a few mining rounds and actually makes what seem to be a good amount of money (in reality they are paid rock bottom prices), but with no way to return the idea is that they will work for the scammers indefinitely. Exactly how the scammers are keeping the new pilots working for them I do not know, but whenever they lose one there are probably two more available.

Being fresh pilots, they may not yet have picked up on a few important points of Elite:
  • the extremely generous life insurance policy that lets you "respawn" in a loaned Sidewinder with all your credits intact even after using the self destruct.
  • the importance of always having an exit plan, to always bring a fuel scope and never risk getting stranded in a system you can't get out of (be it by fleet carrier or neutron boost)

The rule about exit plans isoften broken deliberately by more experienced commanders, and they mostly get away with it. And if not, they know how to get out of a sticky situation (self destruct or fuel rats).

However, this is also an opportunity for an equally crafty fresh commander:

- the first option is to scam the scammer, allow them to give you a ship worth a million credits, then sell it and buy something more appropriate. A player that is there to actually help you would not ask for anything in return. If a commander owns a carrier, a few million credits is pocket change.

- the second option, if you fell for the scam, and is now stranded, is to look for the self destruct option in the right hand panel. Or just ram a nearby asteroid at full speed. When you get to the rebuy screen, there will be an option to respawn in a loaned Sidewinder close to your starting system. Then get on with your life and make som real friends. You probably made a little bit of money to upgrade from the sidewinder, and you now know how to mine. It is a every efficient way to make money if you are not scammed.

- there is actually a third option that lets you keep at least one cargo of mining materials, as well as the mining ship. There are commander groups sending fleet carriers to the systems where this is taking place, offering free transport (for real this time) back to civilization.

Stay safe and remember that there are more good people than bad in this universe.
This isn't new at all. This has been going on for months. I was talking to someone once who openly admitted to doing this several months ago and he was laughing about it. I couldn't really believe it at the time, but they work by gaining the player's trust first. They specifically target people they believe they could swindle. Be careful noobs!

I've heard of modern slavery, but never future slavery or digital/virtual/gaming slavery... it's utterly despicable.

I remember reports from years ago of Chinese prison slave labor being used to farm gold in WoW and EVE so this isn't exactly a new phenomena.

This seems more like someone getting a kick out of scamming people rather than the actual new moneymaking meta in Elite though.

Edit: turns out it was nazis

Sometimes my fingers start typing words before my brain gets around to judging their wisdom. Earlier in this thread, I fired off a quick one-liner that I thought would be funny but was instead offensive. I singled out an ethnic group and perpetuated a stereotype, both of which were wrong. I'm remorseful for my short-sightedness and want to apologize to anyone who saw the post and was offended.

I have my doubts on the exploitation story. It sounds kinda far fetched, for someone to go along with all that it would take to make it happen. I just wish we could attack carriers, and do damage to them, so if a bad FC cmdr did do something bad to people, a group of 'good' cmdrs could get involved and deal with the pirate overlord.

In sticking with the theme mentioned above, it would be kind of like the American west in the 1800's. Posse forms to chase down the bank robbers hiding out in the desert, or at least that is how the western movies where made. That could be a fun mission type.

But how do you destroy their carrier?

Just managed to help one I presume fairly new CMDR, Don't know what he was in but he said he had only a 14ly jump range, he friend requested me a couple of days ago which I had accepted, he called me in game as I was the nearest carrier to him, he was worried about losing his scan data, I jumped across too him and let him repair his ship and upload his data, this was in a system about 3,500ly from the bubble and he has happily gone on his way.

Best of luck to that brave CMDR.

I remember you saying in-game that you were in the middle of helping someone 😇
