Exploration Build Please!

Hi, commanders. I need help to build an Asp that can do exploration, but also light trading! I will be playing in Open Mode.

Thanks,

Is 80 tons of cargo or so sufficient for you?
If so, using the two scanners, a class 5 fuel scoop and the rest as cargo space would work. (Swap one class 3 cargo hold for a planetary vehicle hangar to taste). Like in this build:

It won't jump as well, but once you can afford it, a type-7 makes a mean explorer/trader. 256 tons cargo with 29 ly jump range unengineered:

Interesting factoid: A type-6 can be setup for 80 tons same as the asp, but at almost half the price (It doesn't jump -quite- as well but is considered funner to fly in normal space): https://eddp.co/u/FHewBoMy

D-rate everything except FSD and Power Plant. If you intend to be able to run away, you might want to keep solid thrusters.

What is your level of engineering? For open trading, you want the best FSD (exploration), thrusters and shields (escape gankers). D-rate everything else for light weight.

Except power plant. If you can run your ship on a #D power plant you can run it on a lighter (#-1)A power plant, with engineering maybe a (#-2)A
I do use A rated power plants to cool down my ship but I could run a 2D power plant instead and save a few kilograms but the difference is too small to be important.

One could argue that any ship with a fuel scoop is an exploration build. The question is how you want to balance jump range with utility while you're in the bubble playing in open. Personally, I think a solid "exploration" build makes for a horrible bubble build. Likewise a good bubble build will require some significant losses in jump range. So decide how much you're willing to live with and plan accordingly.

First off, if youre going to be doing exploring, lose the idea that youll be doing any kind of significant trading at the same time. Otherwise this would be mean bubble exploring, which unless you plan on tagging every single body within the bubble (dumb idea imo) then youll be exploring outside the bubble where there is little room for trading unless your trading out the outskirts and then that loops back to little room for exploring.

in other words dont sell yourself short.

D rate everything except your FSD, power plant. throw at least a 4A fuel scoop on it, 2 extra fuel tanks, an srv bay, an infinity scanner, and a detailed body scanner.

dont bring weapons or utility mounts. this will give you a pure exploring build with a minimum of 30 LY range.
