First off - repped for using perl :)

Quick skim of the code and I don't see any problems there. Perhaps display the minimum and maximum payout values to "set expectations" ? Only 3m from an 8m run is... low. That'd mean scanning ~12 CFT WWs and most/all of them getting no bonus... possible but unlikely. It's not something stupid like the key name being "terraforming_state_name" instead of "terraforming_state" (I don't know where you're getting the data or what your object looks like...)

I have previously looked at Gravity, and didn't find any direct link to the amount of terraforming bonus. That's not to say it isn't involved, but it's not a trivial relationship if it's related at all.

You can see the scan values on https://spansh.co.uk/bodies (or https://spansh.co.uk/riches), if the terraforming key was "wrong" it would estimate lower, not higher. I'm not 100% convinced it wasn't user error, but I feel I need to check into it just in case.

With these calculations I believe Sagitarrius A* comes out at 20million (I'm assuming that's been fixed by capping the mass somewhere in frontiers side, but is that "right"?)

Just wondering if there's been any change in the "stability" of the terraforming bonus, particularly with water worlds, with 2.4?

If so, it's not in their release notes nor did it apply to 2.3-scanned WW sold after 2.4 dropped.

I have a new dataset that am still crunching on, but will be posting in the near future.

Actually, no, Sag A* isn't worth that much. Your code is using k=2880 (because I said 'everything else' was 2880), but that's not actually correct for Sag A*. It is it's own, currently unique, type of object: "Supermassive black hole". Pre-2.3, this was using a value of k around 80.565 - but I'm assuming this got a buff in 2.3 so it's probably slightly higher now. Easy enough to add a code branch for it though, and tweak k if/when someone confirms Sag A* value post-2.3.

Fun fact: when the first person (Zulu Romeo) discovered Sag A*, it looks like it was treated as a normal black hole for payout purposes - which back in the day netted him a tidy 139million. If the same was true today, it'd be over 423million.
 
Additional Terraformable Data

Heh all!

Have some more data on Terraformable Candidates based on a 68 day, 60000 LY journey that I completed on 20 Sept. Included visiting over 3200 systems, mostly in Sirius Reach. Took me over 35 hours to sell 65 screens of Carto data. Managed to capture over 95% of what EDD said I had scanned. Took screenshots of all "anomalies" over 6.69% variance.

Tally as follows:

High Metal Content - 1384
Water Worlds - 305
Rocky Bodies - 49
Earthlike Worlds - 42
Ammonia Worlds - 56

After selling the data, crunched on it for a couple of weeks. I could see patterns, but decided needed more data to fill in some holes. Went back to my previous trip into the deep, my 3rd expedition. More, but not quite enough. Hit the forum for the first time in over 3 weeks, and much to my delight, noticed that Iain666 had posted a treasure trove of new data! On the same day I got back, 20 Sep. Quite a coincidence, lol.

This boosted the tally to

High Metal Content - 1849
Water Worlds - 448
Rocky Bodies - 65
Earthlike Worlds - 42
Ammonia Worlds - 56

My focus was on how much the Terraformable Bonus was reduced. Hence, all the following are couched in terms of what I call "Bonus Reduction %". This is simply, based on MattGs formula, what the max should be minus what you don't get, as a percentage. Meaning, if you get no bonus, it's a 100% Bonus Red%.

Added the notes column for those things that aren't in the journal, but might have some bearing. BI is binary. BI-Orb is binary, but the partner is so much more massive(usual gas giant). ISMOON is just that, it is a moon. HM.XXX is the body has a moon, and the number is the mass of the moon.

None really seemed to matter, other than an interesting note. One of the attributes of a planet is "tidal locked". Did notice that a large percentage of those TCs that are tidal locked are actually in a binary relationship with another planet.

BTW, ended up using free apps for this whole exercise (power apps not on my game machine). Primarily Open Office, which can highly recommend. Tried excel after I was done, but the spreadsheets are best viewed in Open Office Calc.


So what's the lowdown? Atmospherics play a significant role; contents and attributes. Much to my surprise, none of the orbital mechanics properties in the journal seem to have any affect. The only one not currently, but will be in the future, is axial tilt. Will be in future EDD version, but I did take some samplings by hand and they didn't seem to be relevant.

HMCB- Low Surface Pressure is good. Medium can be good and bad. High is bad.

Water Worlds - Continue to puzzle. Closest correlation with Bonus Red% is Surface Temperature, but not nearly as clean cut across the board. The various Ammonia atmospheres (Ammonia, Ammonia Rich, and Thick Ammonia) are somewhat predictable, mostly bad above certain temperatures. Nitrogen, which is unfortunately the largest group of planets, is all over the place.

Rocky Bodies - Almost all have full bonus. There are two in the dataset that do not, and they are at the exact top of the list wrt Surface Gravity. From my thumbnail look, RBTs are from .4 to .8 Gs.

Earthlike Worlds - Some get a reduced bonus, but no apparent correlation to any factors.

Bottom line, there are definite patterns, but no overall magical formula I could discern. There are some cases where formulas would closely fit the data (see WWW Ammonia Rich). There are many others where there is a definite pattern for individual planet data points, but the in-betweens are at zero. Almost like one or more attributes exempt them from any bonus reduction. There are a few cases where the in-between points are not zero, but running on a parallel but reduced-value curve.

What to do with the data? Good question, lol.

The following are posts of some charts worked up based on staring at this all for quite a few hours. Have no doubt I missed a number of things, so please shout out if something stands out.

Let's talk about High Metal Content Bodies.

The three planetary parameters that seemed to correlate the most to Bonus Red% were Surface Pressure, Surface Temperature, and Surface Gravity.

The following charts are done in two ways: line and scatter plot. Difference is that for line charts, each data point (planet) gets a tick on the bottom (x) axis. Scatter plot is linear, meaning that no matter how many planets there are, the bottom axis has a set scale.
The former tells you the distribution of planets, but the later is more useful in seeing/understanding patterns for breakpoints and/or formulas.
Do note that in a good number of cases there are zero bonus reductions (full bonus) in-between high points.

So based on the above, looked at various aspects of surface pressure. Other things keep poking up though, and one prominent one was Atmospheric Type. That double hump in the SP chart appears to be due to this.

So, broke things down along those lines. Lo and behold, in some cases, one of the other two listed above led to higher levels of correlation than Surf Press. Below is a summary of my breakdown/results. And then by individual atmospheres. It's useful to refer back to the summary sheet to see how many individual planets are represented on each atmosphere chart. Some are a dozen, others hundreds.

Those that had no effect on bonus reduction (meaning they get 100%) didn't do any charts, for obvious reasons. Those that reduced, but there was no real variation, same reason.

I used the "spoiler" tag for the usual reasons, but that results in the annoying blank space to the right. Not the case for simple embedding, but wanted the page(s) to be easier to load.

Do note that a lot of this had many moving parts, so it's quite likely there are some mis-cutnpastes. Let me know if any stand out.

NITROGEN

Finally, the Problem Child. Nitrogen is the one least predictable. Tried the below, plus a whole bunch of excursions separating hi an lo values, sorting by a seprate attribute. Ex, separated out hi and low temp, then sorted by gravity. Sometimes one of those would be great, a lot of separation/correlation, but then the other was not so great.

At the end of the (insert your home planet)day, this has been quite interesting. Started out small, but kept getting bigger. Did this all because the instability in Terraformable Candidate payouts (and hence what SF considered to be a -more- valuable/viable TC) had me quite perplexed. In a good way. Would very much like to thank Mattg for the formulas/Kfactors that kicked this off (how did you ever do those?) as well as EDD doods and others who have contributed to this thread.

Please all, have at it.

Is this data of any use for modifying EDD formulas? That's totally up to our EDD friends. Started working on fitting curves, etc hence the "recommendations" column on the two summary charts, but after talking with Iain666, it is really a philosophical decision. Do you assume the average user of EDD is it in for the long haul, which would drive you more to averaging between the peaks and valleys in the data. Conversely,if you never want to disappoint short trip users, that would drive you more to picking the worst case, ie the peaks.

Have some more, but collateral, things on this, but that's it for now.

Impressive! Both the dedication and invested effort!

Not much to add after reading. Unfortunately, no matter how much data we amass, we all seem to come to the same conclusion: There are more variables at play than ED gives us in-game or in the Journal files. You coming to the same conclusion with your amazing work puts my doubts to rest that we'd simply missed sth so far - thanks for that.

PS: Just curious - your scatter charts have lines and thus make the individual data-points hard to identify and correlate, which AFAIK would be the goal of using a scatter chart (which I agree is a good chart type to use in this case). Any specific reason for that?

Did it that way to provide visual continuity/comparison to the line plots. Valid point tho. If I did it over again, would probably do bar charts and scatter with just the data points.
 
Speaking of scatter charts... with iain666 and LP Garnell sharing all their juicy data I couldn't resist and did an update of the charts from a few pages back.

As expected, nothing groundbreaking emerged, but still:
  • there are now examples for 67 of the 68 proposed/expected k-values
  • some of the faint patterns have now become more prominent; again, it seems that there are parameters at play that we don't have access to

The "Estimated value" you list seems to include the *full* terraforming bonus - while actually the bonus is sometimes only partially paid out, or not at all.

Any idea why sometimes the terraforming bonus is not fully applied (or at all :eek:)?
 
So, no correlation with parent star type, system position in the Galaxy or system other planets beginning to emerge?

I have a pair of binary terraformable HMCs, substantially similar. One gets full bonus and one gets very little (possibly none). That alone should rule out Star type, galaxy position and a bunch more factors. There are some very broad correlations relating to data held in the journal but nothing yet concrete enough that we could say "this planet will get X bonus" (not even close).
