Close, but no cigar. Michael Brookes said that if your ship is moving, it will continue to move when in external cam mode, you just can't control your ship because you're controlling the camera.

Indeed. Indeed the whole point of this is to ensure that there is no advantage to use this in combat. It is as if you are looking at the galaxy map when being pew-pewed.

And quite right too, given their positioning.

There's an Isinona video where he's hunting a player with a large bounty. It's gripping, at one point he's hovering in silent running behind a potential target who is docked on a pad at an outpost.

External camera would give the game away in this case.

Still, people just want to make cool videos and get their YouTube subscribers up, eh?

Yes.

With the current way to make videos, anything it better and this is the best option so far.

You can NOT pilot your ship in the ED camera mode. The ship continues at its current speed and heading, whilst those who like to see their paint jobs, can see them in space. Epic!!!!!

Uhh, did you actually read ALL of my message, including the part in the next paragraph where I said:
Me said:
FD's solution is to offer drones that "steal" your ship's controls. This completely negates my first concern

... or did you just get to the first part that you disagreed with and then jab the reply button?

Maybe it doesn't bring anything to your gameplay. Don't assume that for everybody. You know, some people might just want to see how the paintjob they purchased from the store looks like...

As I said... narcissistic, selfie takers.

*facepalm* all you like.

When you point your finger like that, remember there's three more fingers pointing back at you. ;)

I could quote Bob Marley's "before you point your finger, make sure your hands is clean" remark... if I was concerned at all about being pointed at. If the cap fits...

I'm going to use the "debug camera" to take nice snapshots and maybe videos of interesting stuff around my ship, most probably without having the ship in view - finally a way to take screenies without the obstructing/disturbing HUD elements. :)

Well the debug camera will bring nothing to the gameplay, and the Isinona video I mentioned shows that it could take something away.

So there you go.

This is so tiresome! So let me get this straight. You want the game to continue to be LESS realistic by continuing to allow a crappy game design to give players the ability to possibly sneak up on people? Is that what you're saying?

in 2015 we don't build fighter craft without the ability to look around 360 degrees but in the year whatever, we have somehow become tactical imbeciles and created space fighter crafts that have tunnel vision and no bubble Canopies or external cameras?????? The reason ALL Hardcore flight sims have 3rd person view. So please stop with this drivel about tactical advantage and just admit that some people want this game to stay arcade and UNREALISTIC so they can sneak up on trading vessels!

Yes.

This is going to allow some beautiful drive-by footage. Epic clips await us.

Was just thinking, as long as the aiming speed on this cam is sufficiently syrupy, with a decent delay between modes, then you could use the cam as a video reporter even in a warzone while still making sure you're useless tactically.

You don't hear flight sim (or driving) enthusiasts complain about external views. I was surprised to read that ED players didnt want it. From a gaming perspective, looking at one view gets boring after a while and a quick cycle and through a number of different cameras occasionally helps mix things up a bit particularly when you are exploring. I understand people are concerned about competive advantages being gained and rightly so especially in an mmo game where getting killed can have severe consequences - you cant just reload your last saved position. Personally, I expected ext views when i bought the game and was surprised the game shipped with only one view. Im looking forward to testing it out

Actually I gotta agree with this. The ships need external cameras... for combat AND docking etc. Not "fly me in 3rd person drones" though.

hehe you need a "PRESS" skin for ships. :D

An Isinona couldn't sit in stealth in a different position using HIS third person camera...yeah, there's that.

Uhh did you read my response?

As an aside, fine if you don't want to take external pictures, but don't be deliberately rude to those that do, it's very uncool.

Yes I did, and apparently I wasn't the only one who found it "odd". You appeared to be trying to correct me and agree with me at the same time.

As an aside to mine... the whole point of my original post was that it's fine, you can take all the selfies you like as far as I'm concerned, as long as it doesn't impact the game play.

If they roll out a PRESS skin and/or decal set I will get it and film all the everything. That would be an amazing career for this game. Goodness knows the news needs quite a few iterations to become cooler, and having roving reporters in spaaaaace covering events with gorgeous feed would be phenomenal to watch and incredibly good for the health of the events being covered and the game overall.

Then why did you accuse everyone who might want to take such 'selfies' being a narcissistic idiot?
No need to be rude.

Indeed. I think I will enjoy the debug camera!

Hell, I might even take a picture of my ship! From the outside!

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Narcissistic cheatz0rs idiot attention-craving wallhacking omnipotent me!!!!!!!111one

/sarcasm

Maybe some of us just want to take some ' awesome screenshots or videos with our ship in the frame and no hud or cockpit in the way?

If that makes us narcissistic, then so be it...

I didn't accuse selfie takers of being idiots... just narcissistic. Please don't put words in my mouth, one's an accurate description and the other's a blatant insult. I didn't insult people, I described them accurately.

NO, just no. Please stop all that realism crap. The only media that ever called Elite: Dangerous a simulation are (strange enough: most!) game magazines but it never was advertised from FD as a "space simulator". There are so many aspects in the game that should ring a bell to you. Just listen to the engine sound of the Viper which sounds like a rusty VW Golf from 1996 with backfire. Should I really go on? Also, providing native 3rd person view is, as the debug drones prove, one of the easiest things to realize. Why can't you just respect their design decision and call it a "bad game design" instead? Make your own game dude, E|D is not a request concert. Get over it!

Oh look if you want to do that.. then ok... "Yes! Just yes!" There, feel better now?

Did you hear me say "simulator" or "realistic"? No, you didn't. You heard me say "immersion" and "thinking man's game"... this is as versus "mario karts in space with frikken lasers" which is what the "I want pewpew in 3rd person" crowd would turn it into. I gave respect where it was due, I praised FD's decision to disable ship controls while in third person. Now how about YOU give respect to views other than your own too... either that or YOU get over it! Calling views other than your own "crap" is not called for - welcome to the real world where people are allowed to disagree with you.
