Nope... under the system FD want to bring in there's no PvP advantage. I have nothing against selfies in space.. I think it's a bit narcissistic (yes I know, I'm an arrogant pedant for saying so. I can live with that) and I won't be using it but if people want to do that... or if they want to shoot movies with it, or take pretty screen shots or whatever that's absolutely 110% fine.

My only fear is a permanant 3rd person follow cam that turns Elite Dangerous into this:

In the space of 2 months this forum has been taken over by practically the polar opposite type of community that was here for 2 years.

There has been a wealth of concern posted over external views, and those same concerns led to many servers for online combat sims having them disabled. They *might* cheapen the combat which is the last thing anyone wants.

Then it's time to put your faith in FD that they will make a system that doesn't affect combat.
And if it does, then adapt and get better.

I take your point but it just doesn't matter really does it?
Space selfies are cool, online narcissism is fine and cool, pretty screen shots are cool and good and also that screenshot you posted is awesome, cool and fun looking.
Thank god FD haven't forgot this is just a game, you know, a fun diversion. I applaud them for this new feature.

edit - the LACK of external cams was one of the coolest things about ED. The whole 'in the cockpit experience' was at one point a unique selling point.

FD please don't mess this up, lock it to the ship every time it's engaged, don't have it be a instant situational awareness key.

They've already said it will confer no advantages in combat, it's 2am, i'm on strong painkillers, tired as hell and with like a microsecond thought on the subject i can tell you that the most basic and easy way to do that would be to make it so you can only deploy your selfie stick out of the window at 0 velocity. Seriously why does everybody act like even breathing on the game is going to make it burst into flames? I've never seen people argue so much against more optional content on a games official forum in my flippin' life, and i'm like a million years old in internet years.

This game is changing anyway, no one will stop it either and I do feel bad for some old schoolers in some ways. Change is coming though, we all know that.

I'll be part of the beta; if it's not basically crippled against combat usage, I'll be submitting a ticket, since FD have made it perfectly clear that they don't want this to be used in combat. I find it hard to believe that this will be in any way difficult.

I stopped caring about that back in November. At the end of the day whatever idea you had in your head about what this game was going to be, back in the day, is irrelevant. I've found that out the hard way.

a) only be deployed at 0m/s
b) has a very slow pivot speed around the centre point of the ship
c) can only be deployed to a few hundred metres out (ship size dependent)
d) will always point at the exact centre of the ship

just off the top of my head. again, i'm tired and on (prescribed) drugs. Maybe thinking a tiny wee bit before being CMDR Chickenlittle is a good idea yes?
