In other words, +1 to this. Not just in dock though -- anywhere in game. Taking external screenshots during supercruise would be killer.

Huge +1 on this, what gives?!?!?! I'm quite sure in the "far future" they will have external cameras available to watch the sides and rear ... why is this such a big deal with ED?

Let is look behind and to the sides for goodness sakes. Heck some of the cars today are coming with full 360 degree camera views around the vehicle.

There is a huge discussion thread about this somewhere around here.

But to sum up, The Devs have said they recognise the fact that people want to see their ships in all their glory and they are working on something, although it is not high priority, which is understandable at the moment.

Not tried 3.9 yet, but I assume there's no external view in it?

Given Gamma is tomorrow, I think people need to lower their expectations IMHO.

The key thing they (the devs) have said is that they want to avoid giving any kind of combat benefit to being able to view outside of your ship. So they have indicated the solution will be some kind of drone that allows you to look at your ship, but not much else.

There's multiple mentions of drones in the 3.9 release logs. Don't know if a camera drone already exists nor how they will be launched and retrieved.

Interesting I didn't notice that. I really want to see external views and I really REALLY hope they are simple easy to use and not gimped. Taking up cargo space or equipment slots is a terrible idea (because I just won't want to make that sacrifice for them) as is large lag times between switching views in my opinion. I don't want to fly from an external view and I don't want to see any hud information overlaid but I do want to fill my gaming experience with cool vistas, flybys, acrobatic displays and all that and that would include sometimes in combat (mostly against NPCs because players are probably going to be too all over you).

Would watching Starwars or Battlestar Galactica of been as cool without the external shots? Somehow I doubt it.

I get the Dev’s View as I used to use external in BF2 to dogfight. You would switch to external quick to locate your target then back to front HUD. I viewed it as not cheating as everyone did it.

But could you not introduce an external view when there was not contact with other ships. I could imagine as the universe looks so fantastic some selfies of ships and backgrounds doing the rounds.

The proposed (earlier in this thread) camera drone is more than sufficient for my needs, I don't want to play 3rd person, after all 'I AM commander Jer the Stampede',, well I would be if I hadn't been kicked out of commander training academy for gross misconduct and urinating on the vice space marshals cat..

Everyone has their own opinions and personal needs, mine are I want to play the part of The Stampede and he doesn't do walking around with his camera bobbing around in tow on a balloon.

If.. and its a big IF... if advantage in dogfights is a genuine issue for people then by all means disable external cameras during dogfights when playing open. When playing solo (and any eventual singleplayer ;) ) however those restrictions should be lifted.

Indeed, excepted ED is a simulation game and not a movie.

Every other simulation game I have ever played had external cameras. Playing a game or watching a movie I still like to get a good view of whats going on from time to time. Makes it more real to me, it helps to make up for the limitations of viewing through a monitor.... Although I would love to have access to external views in real life too ;) Maybe I'll get me one of those quadcopter drone things...

In open play without any combat or ships near all you are doing is denying the player a chance to appreciate their ships and enjoy just how great everything looks. Even a standard Flyby view would be nice. The developer Artist have done such a great job it would be nice to experience their work more. As for the drones it would be useful to check damage on a large ship if a drone took a look.

You’re not going to spend hours on external camera views but it would be a nice touch when it’s just yourself.

is there any way to see your ship from the outside in space (if just for screenshots)

I can't find any way to see the outside of my ship while sitting in space.

And looking at your for-cash paint job only in the outfitting bay just doesn't cut it.

I hope you don't tell me its only for other people to look at, I play solo mode :p
They didn't say "don't buy it if you play solo mode"

I'd value a 3rd person camera (without HUD elements, just for the looks), but for some reason this is dead controversial (though Wing Commander had it, X-Wing had it....)

I have a feeling there won't be one

I think the best we ever got from them was that they were kind of looking into it. They want to avoid people flying in 3rd person and gaining an advantage.

I say this every time, but I would like a record function that you can playback in an editor later from different angles - lots of racing games do this.

Yes a playback sounds good. I don't like the idea of flying in the 3rd person (nicely put) as it just isn't realistic. Try driving your car down the shops from outside! LoL
