No, no and no. Please, no.

The main time many people want this is in combat situations, due to their dislike of or inability to fly within the confines of a simulated cockpit. The solution is to learn to fly inside the cockpit, as everyone does in the real world. Further, the "if you don't want it, don't use it" argument COMPLETELY fails, in that an external view will clearly give a tactical advantage to players using it. It should be left as-is.

Nonesense and rubbish that has been refuted dozens of times in this thread and others.

Yes, yes and YES! IN SOLO MODE! As people want to simply make screenshots, look at their skins and ship exteriors and NPCs don't care if you have an advantage!

Definitely hope this happens would love to be able to see my ship flying around & take pics of it, would also love a camera that you can film dogfights from a perspective other than the cockpit SC already has plans for just this type of thing.
Also I definitely do not want it to be able to be used as a cheat of some kind, just want to see my ship flying around, here's to hoping it happens.

I still get a giggle from the fact that Frontier is selling ship skins as DLC and you can't see your ship in space to really appreciate the skins...:D

It's no more misleading than 85% of the launch trailer, to be fair. Of course, they used the old 'not gameplay footage' card so you can't say 'why is there a guy walking towards the ship when I can't do that' and 'there's no way you can turn that fast in the game'.

It is an obvious solution, but would be a shame to mean you simply can't take a shot in the preferred game experience (multi-player).

No head track, no hotas joystick, no gamepad, only mouse then. This "advantage" issue is not valid.

Well not long till launch now, anyone care to lay a bet on them putting this in at the last moment? No? Sad thing is not in a launch is going to be bad for the game and peoples first impressions. With any luck the fresh influx of people asking how to turn on the external views, what button to see my ship, why no external views. I bought a skin how do I see it in game, etc, etc, etc that will come after launch we might get external views before too long as FDec realize that this part of the "Vision"tm isn't worth the hassle.

Yeh, if they were going to include it for/at release, it would have come in by now for testing... So either not getting it, or it will be down the line somewhere...

There's other more pressing features that aren't available yet - eg: Remote ship transportation etc.

I agree with you WeirdWizard. Also, I am so tired of people telling me about "realism" and "in the cockpit" experiences, since I agree with all those things, and part of why I absolutely love Elite Dangerous. I also want to remind people that there would be many elegant ways to provide external cameras without breaking the immersion, not to mention a freaking simple rotating camera when in your hangar, cause damn even if I can see my ship from the outside when I am putting weapon on it, why should I not be able to rotate it in order to appreciate it a bit more? As I said, and as you said, this is going to generate much frustration and it would have been so simple to fix it just a little bit in order to allow us to appreciate our hard earned space ships and paint jobs. Not to mention the beautiful space vistas.

Yes, it was in the original - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JwmZygqa_0
Hmm, as I understood the original Elite back then on the Commodore C64 that was the representation of the stars in the backdrop... you see it in the video when they disappear behind the planet / station.

I'm not sure about the "Starglider 2", but I first noticed these particles "floating in space" in Wing Commander 1

I-War introduced a brilliant move as they put the directional particles representation in the HUD. So when the HUD was damged or not powered, you did have no visual indication on speed or direction.

A genious concept. Believable, yet not "gamey".

Same brilliant idea with the ships "vectors". Rather than putting "contrails" in space(?), they put a HUD representation of the ships course to judge its maneuvers...

I-War 2 just looks a lot better than the original I-War, concept was pretty similar:

...and of course it had external camera view! It also had drones with remote video feed! I loved that mission where you had to use a painting robot-drone to spray a graffiti on the governors new flagship in space dock! :D

AND you had even a cinematic view, that you could use to look at action going on around the system or when you docked with a ship, etc.

Launch day and lo and behold... still no external views. Seriously FDev if you want I'm in the area at Christmas I can pop into your offices and knock this feature out for you. Shouldn't take me long and can only enhance the game.

Oh yeah while I'm at it I'll see about chucking in a toggle option for orbit lines in supercruise. Maybe even a transparency slider! ooohhh.. I know, I know I must be crazy!

Still no external views and no free rotational camera while docked. Then NO paintjob sales sorry, and no recommending the game to my friends as I already know what would make them very frustrated coming from Elite 2: Frontier.

External camera would be a "Nice to have"

I know there has been a lot of debate on the subject, but I still think an external cam to view the detail and artwork on the ship would be cool. I am not talking about a kill-cam, an arcade padlock view, or anything else that might offer any tactical advantage. Only a basic external cam to view your own ship. maybe even an option to view it from an external location when docked in a star port.

the ships and interiors are great, but its unfortunate we cannot see the work the team has put into the outside of the ship too. - Only my thoughts ...

We can't even fetch our remote ships yet, which a significant failing IMHO. So lots still to do!
