Elite Dangerous is a first person game. There may be plans to add some kind of drone to allow you to view your ship in third person during non combat situations. It may never happen though.

Everyone using the same view in combat makes things even.

Just to drop in to say that a game where you "see" with your hud and scanners is in no way negatively affected by a 3rd person view à la Wing Commander at all.

I'm all for 3rd person view, as long as without HUD elements.

Personally, I'd be happy if I could rotate the view around my ship when in hangar at least, particularly in outfitting. The meager glimpses we get at our ship there, and only there, are kind of a waste. During promotion of this game the iconic design of Elite ships was a topic in one of those videos Frontier released (besides, there's also skins they'd like to sell). Well, how about actually letting us look at them, then?

Regarding an external view in-flight, I can see why you wouldn't want that during combat. What I can't see is what would stop Frontier from disabling the function while there are red signals on the radar.

Ok, so I've spent 10 min in this game, training to launch, all spent looking for an external view - I've been playing simulators for 20 years, huge on flightsim.com - look up my name- wrote a great article on immersion simming 15 years ago, I find it absolutely ridiculous that there is no external view in this game, every simulator from 1995 on has it! Battle Cruiser, FS95, 98, 2000, 2004, X and PrePar3d, Xplane, Fly, FLYII, these are all more robust simulators than this and they all had it. Crap - even Orbiter 2010 - a Freeware space simulator has it! Don't talk to me about "immersion" as that is an excuse for not having it, Its a GAME people! If anyone can choose not to use it if they don't want to! Are we communist now? lets save the people from not being immersed? Is this going to happen and WHEN? I do feel cheated on this based on the on line advertising AND the basic fact that precedence IS that simulators HAVE EXTERNAL VIEWS! Where is mine?

Couldn't agree more... It is a ridiculous decision IMO...

There is no 1st person immersion in this game. Just about every loading screen (hyperspace, supercruise etc..) the audio drops out for a second and rips me out of any immersion. Every time I look at the galaxy and system maps I am ripped out of 1st person, again no immersion. And for me not being able to immerse myself in the galaxy itself by NOT being able to view my ship from any angle destroys my immersion of being in the galaxy flying around. I feel more like I'm in an arcade game with a pasted on cockpit and a star field passing by outside. How 80's lol.

As far as some advantage in combat... That is a pathetic excuse put forward by folks that I believe never played a good flight sim. It puts you at a disadvantage if anything. All of that enemy positional data is right there on the scanners. I don't want a 3rd person view with a cursor and my controls on screen, I want a 3rd person view available like FD advertises in the trailers... If it's good enough for them to try and sell the game then I should enjoy those same views when I play! (can you say "deceptive advertising")

I will certainly be voting with my wallet when new features are added like planetary landings. If I cannot not watch beautiful fiery re-entry effects from a 3rd person view and watch the ground receding as I lift off I won't be buying. It will lack immersion for me...

I am NOT buying ship skins for the same reason. Though I would like to, there is just no point.

As I said before it lacks immersion for me by not including such a simple feature. I want to watch my ship enter hyperspace. I want to see planets and stations receding in the distance as I embark on my adventure! for me that's immersion. I feel like I am almost playing an arcade game right now.

(and the Drone idea.... imo a stupid waste of manpower and programming resources when there is already an implementation in game the devs use!)

Just an old guys viewpoint...

If you use Advanced search you could of found the Main topic. Posted there. You could read all pages why and why not it should be put in the game.

You are not alone in this. Also want the external view in the game, as already said in other posts any more hardcore flight simulator than ED has the external view. Even because it is not only a pvp game.

It is just one of the lost features from Frontier, external view worked really well there and I am not even sure what kind of advantage would it give you in combat. But if so, just disable it if under attack.

[Request] External camera and Youtube

Hello,

I know this has been talked about a lot. I feel strongly about it and must express my opinion. (sry)

External cameras (ship mounted) are very important for promoting ED on Youtube.

Currently ED's variety and hence presence on YT is very limited. Limited to only the cockpit view.

Without some additional way to "present" the ED universe (ie External cameras) I feel that ED videos on Youtube will not reach the full promotional potential they would if the cameras were available for content creators.

(note: people are already recording through the sidewinder sunroof in desperation to create content from a different perspective)

I feel this aspect of the cameras is very important and will have direct tangible benefits to both the game and the community.

Thanks for you attention.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My imagined solution is to have the "external cameras" take up utility mounts on your ship. (fixed gimbal and turreted)
The cameras should have some sort of delay to inhibit use in combat.
(and I'm not really in favor of flying "camera drones')
I agree definitely no 3rd person etc etc.
I agree focused on beauty shots etc etc

I'm all for external views. I hate that I still haven't figured out what my ship looks like from the outside.

Also I'd love to be able to save replays of the past 60 seconds and if nothing else, then at least there pick different viewpoints and angles.

Edit: Well, 60 seconds is kinda short. Let's extend this to 600. Should at least cover all my glorious docking manoeuvers, including the one where I accidentally opened chat and kept crashing into walls because I couldn't figure out why lateral movement didn't work anymore.

ohhh yesssss or me frantical punching buttons while temperature raises and after ship goes poof finding out i activated silent running and safety would have been to just hit the Delete key ....

[Off topic a bit]

OMG! Only just discovered we can't even take screen shots without the cockpit (& HUD etc) in the way.

I thought this had been added in just prior to Release, but seemingly not. Really cannot understand that at all! So you simply want to get a nice screenshot of a view (planet/star etc), and you can't.

Frontier are promoting you make your own history/experience in the game, and yet here we are, at release unable to even take a nice screenshot of some of it :(

Yes - I can live without simple external cam, but I really want clean full screen window with out the cockpit to document all those wonders of the galaxy. No, not the drone with borders and static effect - just clean simple window.

I want a external view while in flight!

Just a simple - "take a screenshot without UI and cockpit layout" would do - you taking a picture from your inside view, but it saves on the HD without cockpit layout obscuring it.
This way it won't break immersion or any kind of tactical advantage for anyone. How is that?

Me too, but looks like it won't happen because of the FD design decision.

Well you are automatically kicked out of the map view when interdicted for example. Would be an easy thing to add to the ext. view function. Only allow it when out of hairy situations.

How about just a review cam to start. Just like any new car has today! How about using stations web cameras like you can do at harbors on earth when ships come in right now.. Hell you could have a cockpit monitor that shows it. Just like cars and planes do today. May be above their expertise at programming.

Hi Lars

There is no external view for the same reason that the IL2 CLOD ATAG servers and a lot of the (serious) online combat fight simming servers allow no external view. However FD have said they are looking into drones to give us some outside views of the ships.

Half the posts in this thread talk about simply disabling such a function during combat, the only situation in the whole game that legitimately calls for an external view to not be available. Going through the trouble of "drones" sounds rather ridiculous and like a waste of development time.

And not even allowing the player to rotate the view around the ship in outfitting is objectively an oversight.
