Playing from third person is a no no in my opinion. But I would like a third person camera to be able to pan round my ship and take screen shots that is a definite.

perhaps a option would be to create a internal component which launches a drone from which you can get an outside view of your ship, also post battle to inspect damage levels on your ship immersion wise

How about: for the LOADING SCREEN, instead of a generic orange HUD-styled model of our currently selected ship we get a non-HUD-styled view of our actual ship, with currently applied paint jobs, outfitting etc.?
Plus: maybe it could even be programmed so that while loading (and after loading has completed, until we click start or sth.), we could rotate the ship, zoom in etc.?

A sort of compromise, since we would get the ability to view our ship from the outside whilst not actually in game(play).

Anyway, happy Elite-ing, fellow CMDRS! :)

Very good idea but for some reason FD deliberately prevent us from viewing our ship - same goes for the ship buying screen.

What are the odds the reason there is no external view is because the only part of your ship being rendered by your game is the front half that you can turn around to see?

This would explain the bug with paintjobs for asp not showing at all, since the full texture wouldn't work on half the ship unless modified.

I've noticed weird rendering glitches when looking 90 degrees to the left in my asp, Planet textures do strange things based on your ship's viewing angle.

Noticed the same thing here, and i think you're right - as an experiment i ran my six monitors as a single row with a 24:3 aspect ratio (shock horror FoV advantage!); the view fades to black at the sides:

It seems like this limitation is applied as a means of boosting the framerate, because when launching the game it initially displays the full uncompromised view. A second or two after the scene has been rendered however the edges fade to black.

What is the point of buying "paintjobs" if you can't enjoy watching them?
Even the most realistic simulators have external views. DCS-World, X-Plane, FSX, etc.

I get the impression some folks extract some small twisted satisfaction in knowing that other players can't enjoy their paintjobs either, so... that's one answer, i guess..

FD - Will we get an external view this year? - Update?

Hi,

I think I can speak for a few players here on the forums who would like to know if we may get to see our ships out in the black this year?

I'm personally chomping at the bit to get some nice photos and great videos out, be warned though, this will promote your product and would have a dramatic impact on sales and sales of add-on paint jobs.

So do you have any info you could share on the progress of the external view, or some recording feature that we could play back from manually placing cameras.

Are we heading towards a camera drone approach? Clearly what ever method we end up with for taking pics and video it must also make combat impossibly difficult using an external view.

Of course flying a drone armed with a camera would stop combat, but I can't keep second guessing, it's frustrating not knowing what's on the whiteboard.

So, can you give anything away regarding external views - please note this has NOTHING to do with a 'playable' 3rd person view.

Many thanks in advance.

I hope camera drones are not too high on priority list. This is typical feature, which will not be frequently used by most of the players. Personally, I will try it once in a month to see my ship, but I would not bother too often, if there is no other use for it.

I too await an external view.

But a camera drone approach is overcomplicating matters and unnecessary.

Just have a completely freedom of movement external view - but disable weapons control and flight control. Simples.

And to all those that say it 'breaks immersion' - piffle! Don't use the feature if you think so - just don't hobble the vast majority of players who DO want it.

Everyday there is a new guy who wants an external camera in the semi official thread and everyday the same 5 old guys shoot the new guy down. Elite better wise up and listen to everyone not the 5 guys. Im part of the one who don't want the camera to be any use in combat, but considering everything, even a basic chase camera would not help in combat considering everything that has to be done while fighting.

look i want a external view this rubbish about drones needs to go away a simple external view will add massivley to the game the graphics engine deserves it! but think of the option u could customise your paint job and see it from all angles just dont give the player a hud or weapon control whilst in that view very simple and easy to do

F.F.S they got an external view of the moon landing im sure that didnt spoil the immersion for the crews

When I'm exploring it would be nice to get a view of my ship in front of a nebula or a particularly cool planet. Don't want to use it in combat or anything

Lack of external view is truly baffling. But "baffling" seems to be the main theme when it comes to game design in Elite Dangerous.
