faction rank and exploration data

Simple question, outside of the past community goal events, should I be turning in my exploration data at an imperial outpost to get imperial rank? Or does exploration data no longer give u rank progression?

Yes you should. But also do missions for the imperial faction. Don't sell all the data to one faction.

Tbh I'm not worried about the rep of the local government, I thought u get actually imperial or federation rank progression from ha ding in data? Or am I wrong?

It might have changed with 1.3, either a bug or design change that it doesn't contribute. Same with bounties and trading.
