Elite / Frontier FE2 & FFE maps of human space & factions

I still have the original wallpaper map that I got with elite frontier 2.

are there any plans to include something similar in the retail game pack or if possible a download of a restricted section of the elite sectors?

cheers

Ray OK

ps. I should mention that the maps that started this thread are superb and incredibly detailed. far too much detail for me, but a work of art none the less.

thanks but too much details? how can it be too much? you know they forgot a few systems on the original map ? i.e. Arcturus, between Ross 154&Wolf 630? there's also a whole missing sector, another star in the empire and a few other stars like Capella... ;)

well i could remove the trade routes by the way, that'd take a second, then quite a few minutes to reexport and upload the pictures & add the links...

i dont know if the map was available as a single item from the webb app/ks campaign, but i do know it was given at the 90£ pledge level :

DRM-free collector's premium boxed edition of "Elite: Dangerous". Includes a T shirt with "I backed Elite: Dangerous" on the back, an A3 Star Map and a paperback copy of the official sequel to "The Dark Wheel".

you cant pledge for that anymore, now it's up to what is in the store and it may never propose this item, it currently doesnt.

Since ED has a much thicker galaxy than frontier, a 2d map like we had would only show a slice of the local aera. i suppose it will instead be some 3d representation, but i'm affraid probably with much less stars so as to keep
readability.

and those boxes might not be delivered before a while, summer 2014 maybe(after the "gamma" phase?).

yes too much detail insofar as I couldn't make much out even at 400% magnification.

for my own personal purposes I would like a star chart similar in size to that which came with frontier elite 2. this would be just as a starting point guide. remember that in frontier first encounters the known galaxy had expanded to include the thargoid planets, found after completing the later missions.

all I would like, for now is to know that the known galaxy to start with is similar to that which old elite vets used to play.

I meant no disrespect. as I said previously the maps at the start of this thread are incredibly detailed and a work of art.

cheers

you did dowload the full version, didnt you? the pictures in the OP are merely "thumbnails". the full files are about 8k x 9k pixels. Or maybe i'm misunderstanding you?

i could make it smaller if you want ;)

i might have to move a few names which would otherwise be off of the map. i drew a rectangle showing where the original map limits where, add half a sector to that in 4 directions and you would also know where the "paper" actually ends ;)

yeah it's true for the thargoids but i cant possibly go that far out, and that' a map of human inhabited space. you can look at the picture i gave at the bottom of the OP to compare the thing to the galaxy, thargoids are for instance in the pleiades, or at polaris, i think there's a 3rd one:

Pleione (4b) (32; 32) Thargoid
Polaris (0; 76) Thargoid
Miacke (37; 144) Thargoid

all I would like, for now is to know that the known galaxy to start with is similar to that which old elite vets used to play.

i'm not sure what you mean there, i think it will look more like frontier, but not as 2D as it was, with the 3 factions and probably a different lay out. i cant say much about the original though, i started with FE2 ;)

I meant no disrespect. as I said previously the maps at the start of this thread are incredibly detailed and a work of art.

dont worry, i'm not as easilly offended ;)
and thanks again.

@nicomak

I appreciate the reply.

you seem to have answered my query, and that the map I already have as a wallpaper is going to be adequate to start playing.

from what I have been reading from the posts regarding the alpha tests etc it seems that the elite dangerous will be following in the footsteps of frontier, albeit with spectacular graphics etc. that makes me so happy. I am 67 years old, 68 when the game comes out. I seem to have been waiting for this sequel forever and never thought that I would live to see it to fruition.

thanks for your replies, I look forward to seeing you all in space.

It will be really interesting to see what kind of star map FD intends to produce. Given the much longer distance between stars now. Sol and Achernar (sorry r haters :)) might just be too far apart to make them both fit on a a paper version, and much less so Alioth (Alliance). Inlays might be it though.
The more I see and hear from FD though, the more I'm suspecting they're all Empire-lovers the whole bunch! Maybe it will only be a map of the Empire, the horror! ;)

Again, great work Monsieur Nicomak.

:D ...and damn fine bubble-heads it will be, the bestest in the whole wide galaxy!

Have any of you come across star maps embedded in crystal?

I would love to have a few of these, centred on Sol, Achenar and Lave for instance.

I know! I would love FD to do a deal with someone who is capable of doing this stuff. Supply the co-ordinates of the systems in the game and arrange to have a number of these made. I would buy the set, hands down!

Impressive work!

But excuse a newbie question: What's the difference between the three maps?

good point i just edited the OP, it was in the title of the thread for the first 2, the last one is the same as the 2nd just with a bit more info.

in the same order :
Frontier Elite 2 map (year 3200)
Frontier First Encounters map (year 3250)
Frontier First Encounters map + disputed systems(white+"!!") + system under federal interdiction(light blue)
those are the same in FE2 anyway.

there are a few thargoids systems in FFE but they are just too far away(polaris, some of the pleiades...).

ED will be set in the year 3300&beyond i think, but with a much thicker galaxy(1000LY), real stars will be placed at their correct location... a 2d map wont do it this time, and i think i read that there will be about 70k inhabited systems, much more than what whe have here.

and thanks !

Thanks for that explanation, nicomak.

I like this map a lot! It must've been enormeous amount of work behind!
Just yesterday I was searching the net for maps and found just some old ones. Then I stumbled upon yours here and voila! no need to look further. :D

well thanks again ;)

i always wanted to make it but never had the courage before. it took a lot of hours, but i didnt count them.

the closest thing i found similar to what i did was on this website :
http://www.jades.org/maps/pop_map.htm#MAP

i found that alsmot when i was finished but it helped me correct and find the last inhabited systems and one or two that i missed.

i'm considering adding the tech level as well with this map. the numbers correspound to this.
it would still take some time but with the recently added coordinates it should be a bit faster.

nicomak,

If you make your map as a web page instead of a static image, you could make it interactive too! Like the population map you linked to, but instead of popup windows you could have mouseover info to a frame at the right side of the screen or something.

As the third version of your map is the most current in time, that could display as default and then the other two as alternatives when you selected one of them with a radio button or a tab.

Just an idea.

Elite '84 Planet Names

I feel like I am hijacking the thread here (sorry OP!) but since Lave is going to be in the game, are the other original 2047 planet names going to be in too?

Would be a waste to reject them based on their historical significance.

Those are some nice maps, by the way. Looks like you guys got spoilt with some nice detail in FE2 and FFE. Can't wait to visit a realistically modelled galaxy...

Post Edit: actually, is Lave in Fe2/FFE?
