look for newbie friendly squadrons like East India Company. Get one with a good discord. As for Open vs. Solo, I rarely see anyone in Open, its not as dangerous as people seem to think, I have never been ganked or griefed. While ED has a steep learning curve it is certainly not as evil as other MMO's like Eve where you WILL be ganked at any time.
