Ships Fer-de-Lance Fer-de-Lance Owner's Club

Just for fun I am trying something new:
One Class 3 Fixed Beam Laser
Four Class 2 Gimballed Cannons

http://coriolis.io/outfit/fer_de_la...wRj49TbqA==.CwBhEYy6e9yA?bn=Patience and Time

So far it's been a fun experiment. With the Beam located under the fuselage on the Class 4 mount I can easily use it in a dog fight; and the 4 Cannons look like a battleship's gun battery fireing on my opponents... Awesome!

EDIT: I just tried 4 x Class 2 Gimballed Multicannons; just wow... Anything smaller than an Anaconda just melts away! All I could do is scream "MORE DAKKA!!!" and grin like an idiot. :D

Has anyone else tried this?

After alot of fiddling this is the setup I use for various missions: http://coriolis.io/outfit/fer_de_la...+MDMIg===?bn=Class4 Shield multipurpose lance

Designed for going to a station and picking up both kill missions, assassination missions, smuggling and hauling missions. I felt I needed a 32T cargo rack so I would not risk leaving behind too many 'high paying' smuggling/hauling missions, therefore the downgrade from 5A to 4A shields (60 less shield strength according to coriolis). I have more than enough shield strength (+ SCB) and firepower to kill any NPCs these missions throw at me.

Small beam turrets have the same DPS as medium pulse, similar power drain but half the weight and track small targets better, if you want to use all weapons together you need to limit the power requirements, as a 6A power dist will run 3 MW weapon fire, do the math ;) , m-cannons in the non turret positions also works well but you'll soon run out of ammo.. so back to lasers.

You can either have long firing duration with lighter weapons or shorter duration with heavier but you still have just 3 MW to play with whatever approach you choose, remember "ye cannae change the laws o' physics" LOL

Seriously though I've tried a lot of FDL builds in Beta's and the PA's and cannon's are great as long as you can find a big enough target to hit but you waste a huge amount of time trying to line up a target but once it starts maneuvering... switch to lasers or m-cannons if you want to get a kill in a sensible time frame

Just remember the damage penalty on small hardpoints against large ship hulls. You can use a class 4 gimballed canon, they work well and do considerable damage once the shields are down from using lasers in the four medium hardpoints.

The classic loadout is and has always been energy weapons to remove shields, and multicannon or similar kinetic weapons to finish off the hull.

This looks really good, actually, and I may try it myself. I recommend a Fixed Class 3 Beam over the Gimballed one due to excessive Chaff use by CMDRs and NPCs alike, and the fact that it can easily be 'walked' onto a target. I have been using thew Fixed mount in Conflict zones to great effect.

Maybe something like this..?

Thanks for the input! I guess I prefer gimbals overall, especially vs smaller ships. I only use this setup for PvE / bulletin board missions.

When I did pure kill/assassination missions I had something like this: http://coriolis.io/outfit/fer_de_la...XahAmC4g===?bn=FDL Shieldtank retract for SCB

That is 800 shield strength but have to retract hardpoints to use SCB. I now prefer not having to do that :p

The extra fuel tank is quite nice, adds 16t of weight but allows more than enough range for various tasks. I never travel too far in my FDL anyway and if I do I slam on a fuel tank instead of cargo rack before the trip :)

Darn You Evanovix... Now I may have to become one of those guys with TWO FDLs in my Garage - One for Heavy Combat, and one for Missions. I was going to use an FAS or an Asp for the Mission role, but I Love the FDL soooo much. *sigh*

I think I will have 3 FDL's. 1 for missions, 1 for combat, and 1 for trading just to upset all the folks who, for whatever reason, "hate" the FDL lol.

Love my Fer-de-Lance, despite moving it around being a pain.

I've tried a bunch of setups, all with their various pros and cons, but currently I'm hunting in conflict zones and running this: A Storm in Heaven http://coriolis.io/outfit/fer_de_la...===.CwBhGYzBGW7qAmRxhA==?bn=A Storm in Heaven

Don't need a KWS (although I generally don't bother at all as it takes that long to pick up the excess). Two chaff launchers powered at the same time and two off (or one + a KWS if I really want one).

The FSDI is on just because it can be a pain finding an A grade. Granted, the FSDI and Fuel Scoop can be replaced with SCBs or Bulkheads if CZ hunting, but I don't find the gains in doing this outstripping the hassle of refitting.

Anyhow, it's rather good at killing anything bigger than a Cobra. Not so hot on the smaller targets - but then I just boost away and find more worthy prey!

I am continuing to refine by Bounty Hunter FDL, the Patience and Time, into it's MK III version. The recent updates have made hull armor matter more, and after trying a build with an underslung Class 3 Beam laser, and four Multicannons, I am stuck on bringing Multis into the build.

http://coriolis.io/outfit/fer_de_la...=.CwBhEYy6s73EA===?bn=Patience and Time mkIII

This design's theory is the use of Class 2 Pulse Lasers to drop the shields on smaller ships, and then switching to quad-linked fire with both Pulses and multi's to kill the Hull.
the 4pa sees use against larger targets, and can be alternated with the Quad-Link to add DPS vs them.
I thought of using Cannons (like @Faster than Jesus, above), but am unconvinced that they will pair well in a quad-link with the lasers for my purpose.
The Frame Shift Wake Scanner is left offline unless/until a target jumps; and then can be switched with the KWS as I get set to pursue.

Thoughts?

I like this build, except that I have installed a C3 beam laser (gimballed) to the Huge hardpoint and linked it to the firing group of the 2 X pulse lasers. I find this allows for a greater impact on shields and can be alternated / combined with the 2 X multi-cannons for a powerful impact on hull armour. I tried the 4 X multi-cannon, 1 X C3 beam laser setup, but found it to be too laborious and time-consuming (especially compared to 4 X pulses and 1 X C4 cannon, my previous setup). I am going to try this new loadout for now and see how it goes.

I also like the 1 c3 beam G + 2 Pulse lasers setup. Having the beam in the same firing group than the 2 pulses also allow with proper positionning to interrupt the beam while still firing the pulses when energy is low.

Good thoughts and +1 to both of You. I have used the C3 Beam in both Fixed and Gimballed versions in the C4 mount, and found it to be very effective; I just find that I miss the punch of my c4 PA when fighting Pirate Lords and System Defense Forces in Pythons and Anacondas. So alas I am addicted to my big purple tennis-ball launcher. *lol*

I have finally perfected the Patience and Time (for me anyway) with the mkIIIb build. It sacrifices one of the Class 4 SBs for a Class 4 Fuel Tank, giving me the legs that I need for pursuit of my targets.

She holds up very well doing the two jobs that I need Her to do: Bounty Hunting and Fighting in Conflict Zones. I will probably meander back to the Class3 Beam at some point though... ;)

I know what you mean about the C4 pa - It is crazy powerful when it impacts a target's shields. I'm just not that good a shot! I can report, though (having just spent a good couple of hours at a HI-RES), that using the C3 beam + 2 X pulses / 2 X multi-cannons is both fun and very effective. As @Itania says below, the pulses keep firing while the ship manoeuvres to allow for the C3 beam to find its mark. Then the multi-cannons can be used to target the hull when the shields drop, along with periodic and judicious use of the beam/pulses for extra damage. :)

I also like the 1 c3 beam G + 2 Pulse lasers setup. Having the beam in the same firing group than the 2 pulses also allow with proper positionning to interrupt the beam while still firing the pulses when energy is low.

For PVP I'm favoring the C3 beam + 2 burst laser setup. I've found that PA + Multicannons are very hard to hit with when you're boosting and sliding around. This loadout strongest with pips to engines so you can outmanuever your target and deal great burst damage to their shields. Clip on projectile weapons or torpedoes to your last two medium hardpoint mounts and you've got a pretty lethal bird. I prefer burst damage over damage over time. I find that I'm making slashing strikes while manuvering to their rear way more than steadily keeping them in my sights.

I may try replacing the C2 bursts with beams, but then heat will be an issue.

I'm trying to get rid of the, in my opinion, god-awful red colour that the Fer De Lance comes in standard with. There would be the gold-FdL as the ultimate paint, but alas, some simpler pilots had to have a shiny laser pointer. So, is there someone who could post some screenies from the military paint pack in-game? The shades are giving me a hard time to imagine it in the applied environment. Would be highly appreciated! That purplish-blueish one stands very high on my list, for instance.

What about tactical? Everyone likes Tactical! And if you want a military, I suggest Pink!:)

Tactical is appealing to me. I like several shades in it. However, I'd prefer to at least see the military in-game first at least once. Since I'm not one to ever change such a thing again, because I couldn't be bothered, I just want to snipe the most appealing. If it were for the by number most appealing skins contained I'd choose tactical any time. Or gold. Basically, give me a golden FdL.

E:// A bit unrelated, I present to you The Terror, a Fer de Lance that can burst away a shieldless Anaconda in but 1 approach:
