Ships Fer-de-Lance Fer-de-Lance Owner's Club

Yeah I've though about taking one out and do some exploring in it! Reading about people being nutters and getting to BP in one that only does 24ly gave me ideas!

Currently out doing the Ram Tah Guardian Mission and a spot of exploring in mine and love the view from the cockpit in VR
It is very well designed a field of view

Got myself a FDL and It's nice to back on the correct side of the ship!! Lets see how long I keep it for though!

I suppose I shall be joining this club, since as of yesterday I am a proud Fer-de-Lance owner.

I decided pretty early that I wanted this ship; since I like style and I like firepower and FDL has both in spades...and well, it is slightly cheaper to A-rank compered to a Python. So a win all-around!

I'm still working out my main combat loadout. I settled on huge plasma cannon, but the 4 medium mounts are fluid; I originally used 2/2 Pulse lasers and Multicannons, but I'm finding a 4 pulse laser discoball to be pretty great too, even if it is pretty power-hungry.

I bought the FDL last night, almost as an impulse because I was very unimpressed with the Python, for all its versatility it lacks any character & after trying many i've found that a ship that can do anything bores me very quickly.

I have to say im pretty blown away with this ship.. I thought I missed my Vulture, but this has everything it had, & more. Its an absolute beauty, its quick off the mark, that huge hardpoint is too much fun (fnar..) & that engine sound is unreal, especially with headphones.

I am a new FDL owner. I bought a new Orca and a Fer-de-Lance this past week. Lots of expenses for me. I cut my teeth and made enough money to buy the Orca in the Vulture and the AspX. Vulture for RES sites and AspX for mining and Passenger missions. The mining for certain engineer requirements. Once I bought the Orca,,, which I love, within a week, I made enough money to buy the FDL. I don't even know why I bought it, except to massage my ego. kekekek. I love the FDL. It has a lot of punch in Combat. I am sitting at about 550 shields and 1400 tank with nothing in the Internal Armor slot. I just cannot abide 20 million for armor in that slot. I have four Med Multi-cannon and one Huge Pulse Laser. I can squeeze the trigger all day with 3.5 to 4 pips going.
The only thing that is a little bothersome for me right now is getting used to the lower Huge gun mount. When tracking a target, I find it more challenging to hit the mark with ultimate consistency.

After forcing myself to try a little patience with the FDL I think I am starting to like this ship. I settled on four medium G5 efficient beams and a huge G5 overcharged MC under the nose. I only have access to G3 DDs but that seems to be more than adequate for this ship. No armor for me, strictly a shield tank.

How well do G5 efficient beams work? Very curious build. I imagine it's a shield stripper in pve but might struggle in pvp.
Mine has three efficient PAs and two gimballed multicannons. I've recently swapped it to biweave. Always changing it up.

I'm strictly a PvE player, and don't claim to be a weps loadout expert. I prefer energy weps for shield stripping as they don't require reloads and seem to be very well suited to the job. This works for me. Not claiming it would work for anyone else. :)

The four medium beams (two with thermal vent and one with something else I don't remember) will do a number on shields, very quickly. I love when Elite medium and large NPCs try desperately to use SCBs on their shields, but I melt them away faster than they can recharge them. And the smaller ships just go boom rather quickly just using the beams.

After stripping the shields on the larger/tougher ships, I alternate between the beams and the huge MC (overcharged) to finish them off.

I tried a CZ (in a Anarchy system) for the first time ever tonight with the FDL. Once I figured out the orange ships were Feds and the red ships were Imperial, I started shooting any and all Imperial ships I could find. I wasn't sure if the 6 day bounty on my head currently would affect the NPCs but it didn't appear to at all. A Fed Python kept showing up near me and between the two of us we pretty much cleaned house for about the next 45 minutes or so. It was fun.

As I said, I'm starting to really like this ship. :D

Sounds awesome! I wasn't criticising your build, just genuinely curious as I've had trouble making good use of beams.

Hey, glad you like your new ship. I tried your load out first when I bought the ship. The slow spin-up of the gun plus that underside location made it difficult for me to get the gun targeted and blasting away. When I did a work-up on the ED Shipyard, I noticed that I get a better sustained dmg stat and almost double the time on the Capacitor. More dmg Longer with the Laser on the Huge and the four Med Multi-cannons. Also, there is no spin-up on Laser so it starts hitting first.

I try to go for the quickest takedown, as I'm not interested in a protracted engagement as that puts more strain on my defenses (shields). I'll glance at the targets remaining hull as I give them a burst of laser fire, and then the MC. Whichever takes down the hull faster, and it varies depending on what I have targeted (and if it's engineered), is what I use the most to finish the target off. :)

@Swordfish: I'm not sure which MC you are using, as the huge MC has no spinup time (it doesn't spin), and starts shooting immediately?

Like I said, I don't do stats, I just use what works for me. :) I tried a huge beam and four MCs, but found that the huge beam doesn't take down shields as fast as four engineered mediums. Also, four medium efficient beams do a serious number on smaller ships, real quickly, such that I don't even bother with trying to use the MC on them. They go boom too quickly to even mess with it.

The huge MC doesn't have a spin-up time. It just goes pew-pew the moment you pull the trigger on it.

I use 4 G5 efficient beams and a huge MC as well. Mine is G5 Rapid Fire - and I rather like that combination.

Rapid fire? Must have missed that one. :) Does the mod cut down on your magazine capacity?

My huge MC is G5 overcharged with autoloader(?). Like the energizer bunny, it just keeps going...and going...

Nope, Rapid Fire doesn't reduce clip size, but it does use ammo faster. There's less need for auto loader with Rapid Fire (because it also improves the reload time.) - so you can add another effect if you like instead.

The huge MC lasts me about 20 minutes to half an hour in a Rez, so I'm quite fond of it as it is.

[Edit: forgot to mention _why_ there's less need for the auto loader effect.]

Cool, thanks for the info! :)

I tried out a Class 4 Fixed Beam in a CZ tonight (possible originally only as it looked cool cycling between the four emitters) and found it far more effective than me trying to hit things with a Plasma Accelerator

So was wondering do I pair that with 4x Medium Gimballed Cannons or 2x Medium Gimballed Cannons & 2x Gimballed Mulit Cannons

4x Medium Gimballed Cannons worked very well when I tried it and will try the 2x Medium Gimballed Cannons & 2x Gimballed Mulit Cannons night time i can fly

If I go with 4x Medium Gimballed Cannons any suggestions on Mods at level 2 max

I will get a Grade 3 Efficient on the Class 4 Fixed beam (as I wont rank up either super power I cant get access to grade 5 beam mods)

Since I've got now a fully engineered shield-hull tank FGS for those dirty combat situations, it is time to re-purpose the beloved FDL to a fast reconnaissance/explorer vessel.

The current build is already lightweight, but I'll try to reduce the powerplant to an overcharged 4A and save weight on the power distributor as well. What it will have is adequate shields, keep the 5ADD thrusters (I may even try to roll a couple to improve the multiplier), then the usual explorer stuff: fuel scoop, SRV and scanners.
I'm kinda hoping I can reach 26-27ly range at least, and a boosted speed of 550 m/s or so.

I will probably use it for deep COL70 sector incursions (like a space SR-71 Blackbird) and quite probably I'll go exploring in it as well.

Once ready, I will post the stats and the build. :)
