Fighter bay use for exploration

It'd certainly make taking an Anaconda out exploring a lot more appealing to me.

Would also make sense if some extra game play were added that such a set-up could take advantage of.

SLF's that can harvest resources like the SRV would be awesome. Would give me a good reason to get out my old Midnight black KB.

Agreed op...SLF is one the reasons Im trying to build an explora T9...failing miserably but points fer effort and all that. Seems silly there isnt an exploration model fighter when it can double as a fast and expendable scout in a military role...perhaps sacrifices firepower fer more speed and range that no other fighter is capable off. Although still calling it a fighter at this point is one of convenience as its not technically a fighter if its not armed.

Another wasted opportunity thats just bursting with potential...making it pew pew only was very short sighted imo ^

Just imagine if said SLF was also a SRV?

SC, scan, land, collect, analyse, RTB...

OP - you should add this on the suggestions forum.

This sounds like a great idea. Imagine being able to super cruise and scan! It would make multi-crew exploration so much fun! Big system? No problem. Take your "shuttle" to explore that set of planets 300,000 light seconds out while your friend takes the mother ship to explore the host star. This would completely change exploration, I think, for a lot of people and would bring a level of co-op gameplay that would attract new players and bring old players back in. Great idea!

There's currently a thread about this over on the suggestions board. I agreed there, and I agree here; it would be a game-changingly awesome addition to the game, and would add so much value.

It would also be a great excuse to finally add that military Asp MKII with a SLF bay...

Probably help to rejuvenate telepresence, especially if you could get a ship that could handle several parasites.

I think it would actually encourage real manning of ships rather than telepresence. The real, and as far as I can tell the only reason for telepresence is that for 99% of gameplay only a single CMDR is required, scooping, jumping, SC'ing, mining, none of it requires or indeed can use more than one crew member. Imagine having a large ship, Conda sized, with usable interior, spacelegs and multiple SRV, SLF and/or SLE's that you can deploy to explore a large system. A group of like minded explorers could head off into the unknown and go exploring, now all we need is some sort of mutiny mechanic and we're set for life :D Huh, where's my pirate smiley when I need it?

This was discussed already before this function was implemented, sadly there is no such thing as permanent multicrew.
What I suggested is to have an exploration megaship that travels roughly 5kly a week through a single 'jump' to serve as an exploration hub. It could be purposed to serve a single exploration or simply it could hop around in the galaxy without a sepcific objective.

At the moment the SLF is only good for racing or joyrides - for proper surveying its range is not enough and you are better off piloting the mothership as the NPC crew puts only 2 pips on the engines...

I've often touted the concept of a shuttle bay. A multi purpose shuttle bay would house shuttles that could be fitted for exploration and are large enough to carry an SRV. They could also be used by large ships to ferry cargo between the ship and an outpost. There could be other vessels for scouting, scanning etc.

This needs to happen. But without telepresence so the mothership can be left in orbit.

Personally, explorer limpets zooming off like imperial probe droids in Empire, backed up with taking a supercruising shuttle from your fighter bay would be a huge improvement exploration wise.

It would be a fast and nimble super-cruiser that cannot jump to other systems but can deploy a SRV.

I don't want this thread to die!

More ideas therefore plz :D

Seriously though if ED was "real" this is the kind of feature that would already exist within the universe. I only hope that FD take head of some of these excellent suggestions and add them to future updates. Exploration needs some serious love and something like this with of course the gameplay to justify it would go a long way to redress the balance.
