Finally put together a VR capable setup (for < $900)

I'm loving it so far. Just pumped the SS to 150% but its hard to compare subtle differences. Also researching the best way to get a picture in a picture of a web browser for hitting EDDB/netflix etc.
I think the keyword you're looking for is "VR overlay." Post here if you find something good, I could use this myself.

In desktop mode, I have my game set to borderless which makes having other windows over the cockpit pretty easy. Haven't found a solution for VR yet.

Yikes...
My GPU is on it's way back from being RMA'd and I'm using a GTX970 in the mean time, with Rift S and all settings on low/off it barely plays ED and is always in reprojection.

That 1050ti benchmarks 61% lower performance than the 970... does it really work? Does the Odyssey plus have much lower resolution or something?

I feel like you're below minimum spec there, even at the lowest settings. So good for you if it works!

The 1050ti is a newer gen card though specs are lower than 970 overall it may be better optimised for VR

Im getting a Rift-S soon to go with my 1060 6gb, how is the framerate with the 1050 Ti? What level of graphical fidelity did you run the game at?
I'm running it on high, I don't have anything on ultra just because. I get 90 FPS consistently except on planet surfaces, where it's about 70, sometimes dropping to 30-40 in certain high-feature areas. With tweaking I could probably work around this.

That's desktop mode though. Not sure what I get in VR, but it's smooth and very slick.

I assume you drop the quality in VR though yeah?

I got my Rift-S setup yesterday with my GTX 1060, it appears to run Elite well enough although planetary detail is compromised horribly to the point where terrain looks like one of my own University graphics demos from 2007. I set the Rift up to prefer quality over performance but I didn't notice much difference to terrain, I'll have to play around with it. I was actually very impressed with the demo apps that came with the Rift and a little less so with Elite. Something about my experience seemed subtly wrong, yet the device seemed to be calibrated properly to the point where resting my hands over my joystick felt like my arms were actually in the pilot's suit. Maybe I got too used to playing flat, turning my head to access menus is especially irritating and it does not feel natural at all.

Yes, you should expect to need low detail settings with these level of GPUs. The terrain material quality setting of medium or higher will do a lot to improve the look, while "terrain quality" can be left low and still look ok as that's the actual geometry.
Make sure ambient occlusion is off as that's a huge hit. Shadows are tough also. Set to low, as off will cause starlight to illuminate your cockpit even if the light is passing through your ship. FX quality can be hard, also. A setting of low will probably be required for that GPU, but it's a shame, because medium is the minimum that fog in stations and planets will appear.

The rift setting for quality or performance is a hidden native resolution setting.
Prioritize Quality: 1648-by-1776
Prioritize Performance: 1504-by-1616
So that will be subtle to the eye, but it will get you a few % back in performance.

Steam users should be aware that steam will anywise your GPU and automatically supersample or undersample, and you'll want to set that back to 100% in steam settings so you can effectively set your desired render resolution in game.

As for turning your head to get to menus; you can change that behavior in control bindings, but even if they appear on key only instead of headlook, you'll still need to turn your head to see them. But, I mean, the alternative is they appear in the middle of your view, right?

Funny thing is I checked my graphics settings while running the Rift and they are set to the highest settings I ran Elite at before setting up the Rift. I'm perplexed with understanding what is determining the actual graphics quality.

I had a terrain problem after an old patch - it looked horribly low quality even though the highest setting was showing in the options menu. I accidentally solved the issue by applying a different setting, then selecting the highest setting once more.

I was using the Rift CV1 at the time.

Does anyone have issues with screen door effects on the VR setups? Thanks for the info
You really have to look for it with rift S to see it at all. Older headsets with lower res will be bad with this, or just older screens from before they were designing them specifically to reduce SDE.

That makes it sound like a visual glitch with the menu. Try toggling each setting so each gets touched even if you change them back after. Apply, then go back and set them to what you want. Some settings require a system jump or menu log to take effect.

I'll have a jiggle with the settings, cheers.
