Fine fines and more fines! The fines discussion thread

I was scanned on the way into a port and paid the fine. On my way out, I jettisoned my ill-gotten gains, but was too close to the starport. Got fined again. Doh!

After a few weeks of smuggling in my T9 without being scanned once, I had the bright idea of trying a run whilst drunk after a night out :/ The result is a 2.3 million credit fine.

I guess I should just pay it off, what happens if I don't pay after the 5 day's? Will the station turn hostile if I'm scanned by the cops? I noticed I took a hit on my fed & local rep due to my drunken stupidity..

2.3M Cr ?!
Wow, for that kind of fine you could have ganked & killed ~360 clean Ships in a mass-murdering terrorist frenzy, causing Billions in damage.

Just goes to tell how insanely out-of-whack the entire Crime punishment (or lack thereof) System is.

Out of principle, I wouldn't pay it. Nowadays (since PowerPlay), alot of non-Ganker/non-Pirate CMDRs fly around with big Bounties or a Wanted sign. Kinda became meaningless ever since for that reason IMHO.
Of course, a Type-9 with a 2.3M Cr bounty (if with a Government) would be quite a sight and draw "some unwanted attention" :D
(so I guess it would be okay if it is with some Independent Faction AND you have another route you could service instead)

Since no one answered what was asked OP this is it:

I never pay them because the mechanics work like this:

While you have a fine no one will bother you if scanned.

After it expires you will become Wanted in sectors where that minor faction that fined you is present and the fine will be turned into a 7 day bounty (7 days because it was a huge fine and that is the maximum time) by the minor faction that gave you the fine.

If successfully scanned by the cops belonging to that minor faction, THE COPS ships will attack you, the station WILL NOT, but it will cancel your docking privileges and you will have to SC out and back in and try docking again.

If you commit more crimes like being scanned with more illegal goods it will reset your wanted bounty timer back to 7 days MAX, or add however much more time is normally given for the new crime if it is a real minor crime, but still it cannot go over 7 days.

After 7 days passes (or however much for the bounty to expire) it becomes a legacy fine that will never matter unless you die and respawn in a station OWNED by the minor faction you have a legacy fine with and then you will have to pay off that legacy fine before being allowed to respawn.

So basically what you were worried about is the station blowing you up, and no that will not happen if you don't commit the typical offences like shooting the station/cops/players etc.

A Dormant bounty another player mentioned ONLY occurs if you are destroyed and respawn in a station owned by a faction other than the one you currently are wanted by. These bounties do not become live (and make you officially wanted) again unless you are successfully scanned by the cops...but again this only happens if you die during the time you have an active bounty, once it has turned into a legacy fine this doesn't ever happen.

That said there a few annoyances like being interdicted by BHer NPC's, or other players, but I know you've been around long enough to easily escape from these, so I wouldn't bother paying it. You'll just let the fine then bounty eventually expire and never worry about it unless you happen to die and respawn at a station owned by that minor faction one day and you'll have to pay off the fine same as you would be doing now anyway.

it pretty much models our system. go hit someone in the face and you'll get a few dollars fine, maybe some days community service. download some songs from internet, however, and you could be looking at millions in damages for ... how was it again? yes, 'loss of rightful revenue'. sounds weird but that's what the priorities are.

Nope, Being Elite is quite simple to stay alive as long as you have half a brain, no when to either push for the kill or retire your ship to recover. So having some bounties on your head makes OPEN play just that little bit more exciting (For me anyways). I have met a few players that have become friends after trying to claim my bounty.

Oh and Kudos to a Cmdr that scored a nice bounty (was a few weeks ago), Good flying Cmdr! I was completely out maneuvered :)

Drunken smuggling ftw.

Ignore the fine, just hit another run when it goes hot and turns into a bounty (7 days from issue)

Once the bounty expires its business as usual.

I'm pretty sure you have a bunch of good routes you can work.

Bounty durations measured in minutes are only for very minor offences like stray fire. iirc it jumps immediately to 7 days if your bounty reaches 5000Cr.

Forget murder and mayhem if you want to be public enemy #1. All you need to do is hover in front of some cops with a T9 full of illegals and you'll have that top bounty you so desire as soon as your fines expire.

I've been accidentally scanned twice whilst smuggling - same issue, but 3.6mil Cr worth of fines here. Can't remember if its converted to a bounty yet or not.

Interested to see how the mechanic works too. Good replies.

For me, depends on where I am.

Imperial space: ASAP
Alliance space: if I travel there a lot like lave, yes
Federal space: You'd have a better chance of being impregnated by Thargoids than seeing me pay a fed money :D
Independent space: Eranin yes, everywhere else is like Alliance space
Anarchy space: Can you get a fine in Anarchy systems?

Yeah. Starport crud always does it. Reckless flying, some individual starports even have illegal goods. So yeah, unless the system is completely deserted, there are ways to get fines and bounties with the factions in it.

Ah thanks for telling me. Didn't know that. Guess my same smuggling tactics apply in anarchies as well.
