What happens if I put my chaff in the primary fire fire group? Does it mean it will fire when I shoot my lasers? Any explanation of fire groups appreciated.

I have a Logitech Saitek X-55 with two fire buttons. One is "Primary" and one is "Secondary"
You can assign to "Fire Group One": with the Primary "Fire" Button #1 to the lasers which will show up in the fire group as (1) and then in the same fire group, assign the secondary "Fire" Button #2 to the chaff, which will show up in the fire group as (2).
So, in one fire group, you have two fire buttons, one button for lasers and one button for chaff. If you only press one fire button, it will fire that choice. If you hold both fire buttons, it will fire both.

One thing worth bearing in mind regarding assigning things like Chaff, Shield Cell Batteries and Heat Sinks to a fire group is that it'll fire ALL said items assign to that groups Primary / Secondary button rather than operate them sequentially.
I.e. I have TWO Chaff launcher and assign them to Secondary Fire, with my guns on Primary. When I activate Chaff via secondary fire BOTH Chaff will trigger at once. However, if I use the dedicated mapping for Chaff, just ONE chaff will fire, enabling me to fire the other chaff while the first is still reloading.
On my ships with just one weapon group - rather than my usual Primary (energy) and Secondary (Kinetic) builds - I'd pop Chaff onto the Secondary Fire button for convenience, but only if I have just one Chaff Launcher.
So, Guns on Primary and a single Chaff Launcher on Secondary is fine, but two or more Chaff Launchers on Secondary will just waste ammo.
Just something to be aware of if you're not already.

Some modules can be fired with their own dedicated button, including chaff. I don't assign chaff to a firegroup at all
Both of these are excellent bits of advice when it comes to the various counter measures you can equip
All the modules that appear in your Fire Groups page can be assigned to either Primary or Secondary fire and most defensive Utility modules have their own hot key you can set up instead.
All my Bounty Hunting ships have a Kill Warrant Scanner bound to the Primary fire button in my weapons groups so I can scan & shoot simultaneously if necessary.
It’s also handy because I can always see if I’ve scanned my target with out having to switch groups.
And all my Combat ships have a Heat Sink & Chaff Launcher bound to their own buttons, it saves on Fire Group buttons being able to manually assign them.
Chaff? I thought only NPC’s used chaff!
