Fixes, tweaks, changes we'd like to see in ED

I don't remember seeing a single source thread of this nature before, so I'll start one.

Please list fixes, tweaks and/or changes ED specific to VR. This should be related to what's currently available in game and not a wish list of new V related features. Or, we could have a fix/tweak list and a wish list. For example I'd like to see:

Fixes/tweaks/changes:

1. HUD elements moved closer to the player so we can read them.

2. System map default zoom further out so it doesn't move at a snails speed.

3. SLY HUD elements moved closer (for reading) and lowered so they don't block the side windows every time we try to look right or left.

4. Fix for the galaxy map not snapping/random unsnapping when using a mouse.

5. Shadow/light anomalies when view is anything other than centered.

6. Make the parts of the SRV HUD that are "outside" the vehicle, turn on/off together with SRV wheel deployment or something. the HUD is far beyond the bulk head when the SRV is in the planetary vehicle hangar and it looks very bad in VR. Like objects in 3D look at completely wrong depth.

Wish list:

1. Rotating chair that's button activated, for those times you just want to look around in the cockpit without needing to stand up or use clever centering techniques.

2. Floating virtual Keyboard when activated - this would be awesome within the Galaxy Map, for when you just want to search for a system etc.
The Virtual Floating Keyboard could be assigned to a HOTAS or Keyboard key for example.

A simple on-screen keyboard in galaxy map. A-Z, 0-9 and whatever characters are in system names, plus an enter key. Can be compact and semi-transparent, tucked into the lower right corner of the screen, but if needed, it's there. Would work with mouse click or standard navigation controls.

3. Keep the Witchspace animation we have today, but have it come straight towards us instead of the twisty-turny motion that causes some nausea in VR.

4. Instead of moving the HUD elements closer, give us a few choices for font size to increase the text size. That would make for larger boxes, but small price to pay.

5. The asteroid graphic needs an update. It is easily seen to be 2D and drawn crudely.

Please add your's and I'll update as they come in.

For me it's OK, don't move anything closer, I can read everything very clear

Moving around in the system map, zoom in and out, left right, whatever, is very easy if you assign hotas buttons to all axes.

Using a mouse in the galaxy map is a very bad idea.

Agreed - I find text to be fine and nothing wrong with the Gal or System maps when bindings are correctly configured for HOTAS use.

Good one, I was going to mention this one and forgot about it

Good suggestions. Thanks

I would like to have the option to switch the Galaxy map and System map back to 2D when using VR.
I find it much easier to navigate and select items using the mouse, but the mouse is unusable in the current VR maps.

The 3D VR view of both maps is nice visually the first time you use them but the galaxy map especially is a system resource hog and they don't provide any advantage over the 2D versions.

And while we are on the subject, why do they mute the cockpit audio when you're in the map. I see no reason for doing it and I would feel much safer when I'm in the map if I could hear what was happening in the cockpit.

I guess they wanted the galaxy map to have it's own "atmosphere", but I agree I'd also like to continue to hear the cockpit audio as currently it feels too much like we are being taken outside the ship. Perhaps the galaxy maps sounds (which I like) could be reserved for when docked.

The same thing occurs with the in-station menus in the Eagle - the upper corners are actually outside the cockpit glass, but obviously are rendered in a layer that makes them look like they're inside. Odd effect.
The commodities menu, being flat, is 'outside' by 2 feet or more :)

Yes - I wish the cockpit audio would still play in the star map too.

I saw the rebuy screen the other night as I was searching for likely mission-generating systems. :(
I was sitting in my little A-rated Eagle after taking off, stopped about 3km from the toaster.... into the galaxy map, lookin' lookin', good. Star selected, I came back to a black rebuy screen. Huh? A powerplay Federal whatsit found me and blew me up... luckily I was only in the Eagle with a 80K rebuy... not my Python or Annie.

Not sure why the mouse is not usable - it works for me - the only thing you can't do reliably is select the star system. I use the mouse to get in the right spot, then zoom in so I can see the grid dot-shadows and use hotas to select the dot. Then the little context menu shows up with Select, Route To etc.

Seemingly simple but who know: Display frame rate info in HMD. Helps tweaking things without jumping through hoops.

Fixes/Tweeks
1. no thanks. They are perfectly easy to read already.

2. Not sure. Never used it. I just use the snap to station, planet, moon or star in the menu. It's pretty easy.

3. Again they are fine and I can read them perfectly. Any closer and it will be uncomfortable for me.

4. Do not use the mouse ever for the galaxy map while using an HMD. It's perfectly fine as is. Look at your binds.

5. Haven't really noticed.

6. Again, haven't noticed so not too bothered.

Wishlist.
1. Yes that would be cool.

2. Already been mention many time. It is not going to happen unless the GUI designer flat out lied to me.

3. Again not too bothered either way.

4. I like this. Have various areas you can choose to put them per ship.

5. Haven't noticed so not too bothered.

I really want a slightly scaleable HUD to increase the size of text. They were supposed to add it that at one point somewhere around 2.0 or 2.1 and it disappeared.

And while we are on the subject, why do they mute the cockpit audio when you're in the map. I see no reason for doing it and I would feel much safer when I'm in the map if I could hear what was happening in the cockpit.

Great suggestion. I can get what they were going for, but at least have the cockpit audio low in the background.
