ANNOUNCEMENT Fleet Carriers - Content Reveal Announcement

I'm assuming chat will be an utter mess even with slow mode so I'll probably give it a miss 'live' and just ask questions & get answers through this forum if anything remains outstanding. (...)
I agree that the chat will be extremely ineffective, but in this situation that we all are... no way ask for more, maybe some multistream from home, etc.
This said, I will watch the stream like dozen times and then use the Beta to learn how it works - my decision still stands: I want it, I worked for it and I will have one (for my own special Deluvian purposes ;) )

Yes, that did occur to me. I haven't quite reached 5bn yet.

However, even if they are 5bn in the beta, and the snapshot is taken before I reach that, I could sell my Corvette. The beta is a "parallel Universe", I'd still have it in the main game.
My big fear in betas when selling my fleet for funds is always that I will find out I was in the real world not the beta one and will have to write a very shamefaced grovel to support to get my fleet back.

Heck yeah! A must-have in the carrier is a self destruct. Every serious space ship or station has to have it. Just make sure you have an extra 5b to buy the next one (unless the insurance cover some... but does it cover self destruct?)
It used to on the suicidewinder.

But how do you self destruct an indestructible ship?

Paging Captains Black and Scarlet can you report to the information desk please.

5 billion....5 billion credits, ok thats gonna take forever so i very much dout i will ever afford one, what a shame, as usual the fun stuff is only available for the top 5% of players who live on this game and grind there legs off for months. Perhaps you would consider time share so the majority of the players can join in the fun instead of excluding us, nice idea though.

It's not I want to own Fleet Carrier - hell, that's the last thing I would ever like. I rather pointed out there are Squadrons that can purchase three carriers right away given their total amount of money BUT nobody in the Squadron can do that alone. Compare it with real life situation in which one man is not able to start a business, but if he gathers two-three more people - their money pool increases considerably and they can start a business as partners.

This is why I think buying Fleet Carrier should not be bought by a rich player only - but also by a bunch of players whose totalled money allows that. So one CMDR can buy his own FC for 5 billion -- but, let's say, eight players can fork up around 625 million each at average. That's why I pointed out there are rich people who can start business right away and the people who need to make cooperative in order to even consider doing that.

Really? Okay, how about roleplay mercenary and head to a system in war state in a wing, everyone take a wing massacre mission and share it. Head to CZ and play paid mercenary and get well paid for it. Plenty of coin to be made. Finish one system, move to the next. Come on, it really is not that hard.

The cost of the initial FC isn't what concerns me. Initially buying it is one thing, but it's any buyback and/or upkeep costs. This new feature is all the more reason to implement a kind of "guild bank" squadron credit pool for officers who buy a fleet carrier, so they can allow squad members to help chip in credits for any upkeep costs or to save up as a squad to buy one.

FDEV !!!

If you take one thing from this thread besides that the forum is populated by babies and sadists its this:

Allow carrier owners (and members of their flight group) to make news posts to their own carrier that other players can read utilizing the same basic subsystem as local station news, but all done thru the game ui and via a web api linked to your account. Limited to one post per account per day.

That and allow thargoids to damage fleet carriers. It would be annoying assuming the narrative picks back up again and all kinds of normal stations are getting attacked and damaged but nobody's fleet carrier is getting touched. Players could repel attacks if they reach a trigger in a CZ around their fleet carrier over the course of 2 days once an attack is underway (something you wouldn't know about unless you logged in). Once damaged, fleet carriers would be mostly inoperable and can't jump until repairs are made.

for lulz... allow random-ish superpower capships to attack fleet carriers that are in territories they dont match up well with (the owner is aligned to an opposing power or is hostile to the local superpower/faction).

The problem/difficulty I see/have is those/me that only have a meagre quantity of credits will have to do their favourite thing for a long time (possibly a year or two too long) to get that much, or do stuff they don't want to do in resentful sessions!

Perhaps FDev might see it's way to introducing a smaller more efficient Fleet Carrier for those with smaller fleets and budgets!

We will see!

not everyone's favorite thing is worth rewarding.

Some people's favorite thing is killing people who try to play space trucker in shieldless paper thin ships. Where's their path to 5 billion ?
Some people like to fly really close to the surface of planets in canyons and such with fa -off and see how close and fast they can go without colliding. Where's their path to riches?
Some people like to twiddle their thumbs and do any number of stupid useless activities in the game that dont offer any credits. Plenty of other activities do offer a lot of credits.

If you dont have a lot of credits (and on top of that, you dont have a lot of ships), you dont need a fleet carrier.

It's like rank 5 in power play. If you dont have the time and money to invest in getting rank 5 and then sustaining it, then you dont need to be rank 5. That mechanic has been around for years and has behaved just fine. So to will fleet carriers.

So they should make content for those who don't play the game? They should make FC available for peanuts, so you can own one at the start and get bored after few hours?

It's good that we have features that can become long term goals. We should have a lot more of those to have more options to choose from.

Carriers were supposed to be a squadron feature at first - now we have option to buy one without the need to join squadron, not excluding those who don't want to fly with others.
If you don't have enough credits, consider joining squadron though. You'll get rich quick, and even if not, you'll probably get access to Carriers owned by squadron members.

Sorry Skip I just can't agree with your reasoning. Nothing personal, I enjoy reading what you post for a very long time now. Yes, I would like to see varied sizes of FC available eventually, but your personal Cr acount is not an argument for it. You have been around as long as I have and frankly I have never "ground (grinded?)" for my cr's and can buck up for one. My first goal was to be sure that I could buy whatever ship I happened to want at any time. Second was to never worry about rebuy again. Now, did I make a choice to do one or two days every 3 or 4 weeks (okay, sometimes 3 or 4 days) to get to my end goals (things that pay well)? Yep, kinda like RL. I set mini goals like "okay I just passed 500m cr and I will never dip below that again; now I'm at 1bcr and won't dip (etc)". Further, if I wanted a new ship or module I would then go out and earn the cr's first (so as not to break the previous rule) plus just a bit extra.

I do hope they bring out some smaller versions eventually, but that time is not now I would guess. If they do bring out some smaller pad versions, I would like a "mini" or two myself (in addition to my major carrier).

All said, the release of these behemoths has been signaled for quite some time and you have been well advised to save your pennies for it.

Edit; By the way Skip, you are welcome on my FC anytime until you can afford your own.

Serious question on behalf of the people who have barely scraped together 5 billion at this point....

How old will the galaxy snapshot be that Frontier use for the public beta? In previous beta testing sessions it has been common for Frontier to take a snapshot from the galaxy from several weeks prior to use in the beta, i'm sure many people will remember logging into a new beta session and noticing their credit balance is a lot lower than they were expecting.

I can see a great many people being frustrated after grinding out 5 billion only to find that they have to do a crap load more mining just to buy and test a fleet carrier.
Or do you think during the beta we'll be able to buy a fleet carrier for like 20 fish :D

In previous Beta's prices and accessability were reduced so that players could test all the new features, it would be moronic to have a Beta were most of the people playing the beta couldn't actually afford the new content they were there to test. Also in previous Beta's players who were far out in the galaxies back reaches were brought back to the bubble regardless of where they were at the time of the galaxy snapshot, so I am sure ED has all this sorted for the beta.

Hello Frontier,

It seems that, in addition to the fuel cost (I'm fine with it), a Carrier will have an "upkeep cost". And if I don't log in, I will have a "debt"... Why ?
If I'm a casual player, who love playing other games during weeks; and then who come back to Elite, will I have a debt ? Will I be punished for not playing ?

I was quite happy when you announced the carrier. But after the "upkeep cost" and the "debt", I'm disapointed... Why are you doing that ? Carriers looked fun. Now they seems boring. And I won't bother with boring things, sorry ! They are other games.
