ANNOUNCEMENT Fleet Carriers - Content Reveal Recap

While I am on the fence about it, and certainly anticipated a UC: Exploration is nearly risk free, even more so with a carrier nearby. This low-risk is offset by having extreme losses when it does go wrong. If you can sell all your data whenever you want, there is almost no risk of something going wrong and no real consequences when it does go wrong. Not sure about that from a balance perspective: low-risk-low-consequences isn't the usual target.

Not saying I am against adding a UC, but I am not sure it is as straight-forward a choice. Ideally I would like to see some kind of explorer income, but without being able to sell all data. For example, only allow certain types of data to be sold. That way you can keep your upkeep going for as long as you want, while also still suffering a potential risk if things do go south.
Codex vouchers can be redeemed, maybe they need to increase the payouts for those or add a lot of extra things to find.

I agree. Stellar cartographics should be on there as a purchasable option, but the money you get from it is only a cut.

This would make a lot of sense. Keep full reward if you risk the treck back to the bubble, or alternatively get a reduced one at the carrier. Possibly somehow proportional to the distance to the bubble.

I don't understand the economics. No NPC interactions (boo!) and no reason for players to pay at a premium unless the FC is out in the boonies where there are no players. So bottom line, unless a group is TRYING to keep a FC in operation, the responsibility falls solely on the owner. I really like the rest of the features, but there needs to at least be a CHANCE to break even on weekly upkeep without constantly dumping credits into it. Not even talking about actually making a profit here...

My hope is, this will open up an entirely new era of expansion into the greater galaxy. The premium that FC will charge will be only enough to cover expenses (eventually, hopefully). With FC's stationed throughout the galaxy, exploration will be much easier for everyone. We can station these FC's at points, making it less of a multi-week/month operation to go see Beagle Point, for example.

I never keep SLF pilots because of their upkeep cost, I hope fleet carriers don't end up the same.

Overall, I think carriers are great, but the upkeep cost is not a good idea and may put me off bothering with them at all. It depends whether we can in practice cover the costs and the fact that the carrier could be lost is a terrible idea.

Ways to fix carriers for me and arguably many more players:
  • let you select a faction to support (or none) when jumping to a system
  • add possible mission board service for the supported faction in question
  • security ships belong to that faction in question
  • add BGS effects for trade and other transactions (unless "none" is selected maybe)
  • add optional Universal Cartographic as possible service

Also, though not as easy to fix...
  • Add SQUADRON carriers that can be financed and managed by Squadrons
I would also appreciate, if the upkeep fee would not feel like a mechanic that is just there to keep you logging in every week.

Except you have to bring the Fleet carrier out there first, which is slower then jumping out anywhere in a decent ship.
So I still don't understand this.
For me the idea was simple enough: Park my Fleet Carrier out in the middle of nowhere with all my ships and such aboard and use it as a cartographics sales station while I map the surrounding area. The point isn't to use the carrier itself as an exploration machine but to use it as a means to make my exploration more immediately profitable instead of running a 30k lightyear round trip to turn in my data.

Thank u FD's for some new info about FC's!
But there are so many qustions left...
Can some of DEV team clarify some of following things for us please?

Questions:
1) Will be Universal Cartographicsan in line with other additional servises to purchase?
2) What corelation between jump distance and fuel I will need to spend? If I jump 100 years, I still use 500t of fuel or less?
3) Are there gona be 1 class of ships availavle (Drake class) or there will be more of them to choose from?
4) Is there any options do expand cargo capacity, jump range of my Fleet Carrier?
5) Will we be able to buy modules for FC and costomize it like we do with normal ships?
6) Can I have Material Trader as a service on my FC?
7) How many player ships could be docked with FC simultaneously?
8) Will be FC counted as respawn point after my death? (for me as the owner and for other players)
9) Is it possible to store dead horses on FC?

Thank u very much in advance. Really looking forward to test this beasts my self...

Just know, Dark Enterprise whatching you...

It's already strong enough for/against the BGS, the first four points would be totally OP.

If the goal of the upkeep costs is to combat inflation, why not allow a large upfront cost to eliminate upkeep? I'd gladly pay ten full years of upkeep to eliminate it altogether. It's not about the amount of money, it's the payment model I object to.

Will you be able to sell exploration data?... I didn't see that as an option. Would be ideal if you based it at a remote location e.g. Beagle Point lol. You know someone will want to be the first to do it ;-)

Looks damn impressive none the less.... will be interesting to see if the commodities market will actually change gameplay or not actually used... time will tell.

Excellent work guys, can't wait to see what you have up your sleeves for the next big update/ add-on (fingers crossed for landings on other planet types).

Without Universal Cartographics, fleet carriers are pretty much useless for explorers. There will be so few people out in deep space that I doubt setting up a trade post would be a viable option. Even if you did manage to sell everything, you'd have to return to inhabited space to restock. If the payout from cartographics is too much, add in a fee to lower the payout.
