ANNOUNCEMENT Fleet Carriers - Content Reveal Recap

Even lower risk exploration? Apart from which it wouldnt really be fair would it? Carriers jumping in and hooving up entire sectors or people trying to write their name on the galaxy map. Very un simulation type things.
Unsimulation? How is it Unsimulation.

It will take a lot longer to get your fleet carrier out their, every two jumps having to mine 1000t of stuff to refuel. So if it's a race, anyone with a FC is going to loose big time. Even without having to mine for fuel it's still faster in your own ship and then you also need to pay for upkeep, over 10 million a week.

So now you have two options:
1. slower, more costly but safer

2. faster but a bit less safe.

The issue with exploration is that one mishap can be too punishing. I have been out exploring for over a year now and one mishap and all of that could be down the drain. There is nothing else out there as punishing as that. Being able to store your data just makes it a bit less punishing.

I don't mind if it costs me 10M credits each week, that can be made by doing almost anything, but I get the feeling it's going to be more like 50M each week once I have added some services to fiddle around with. That's a PITA to earn any other way but mining. I hope they balance out methods of earning at least some.

I'll get one just for the ability to have all my ships and modules in one place and not have to move everything again the next time I decide to "move home". That's the benefit I wanted in the first place and it's still there, amongst the clutter of other, seemingly useless, features.

FRAK!! @&^$%*@@!!! Please frontier please fix this for the explorers. This is the best game out for the true deep diver, the astral traveler, the farthest star seekers.. Even if you make FC's that come in something like "economy size" so the explorers, who really only want a place to dock from time to time while out in the black for months, can hang our hats in safety and be able to take a higher risk with high G planets while 30k LY from your last port.. A place to sell carto data just in case of an ruddy mysterious explosion that cost us a lot of wasted time and effort. For me that is the true killer of a game like this. Yes i like the air of danger but when there is a way to somewhat alleviate that concern.. well.. i dont see the harm in helping us out. Make another kind of FC that we can take out without all of the bells and whistles so we can just explore like a true bebop brown-coat. We dont want to trade and we dont want to worry about a 10M WEEKLY fee. For us something like 5M a month would work but then we can get something like storage, repair or just carry a few ships along for different situations. Id spend a lot of ARX on livery and im sure all of us explores would. We know how it all works and you all are working your ars off so i have no problem with kickback.
PLEASE FRONTIER for the love of all thats SHINY help US OUT. .. oh and stay safe and wash your hands.
OH FRAKN SEVEN
with love,
CMDR Grennen

If carto data trade was made available i can see it maybe working for us explorers. If not.. well.. ill be a Citizen sooner than later. o7

I was excited for Fleet Carriers, then I read this OP.

"You can continue to accrue debt for a number of weeks but once it exceeds a set limit, you'll be given a week to resolve your finances or lose the carrier permanently."

"Fleet Carriers come with a lot of responsibility and maintenance"

no thanks, I already have a job and a house for that. Have fun with it though, it's just not for me. I see 0 benefit to owning one but a lot of work to own it. I'm actually so disappointed I'm not even going to bother with the beta now.

Seconded. Frontier seems to confuse more grind with fun gameplay. They should develop scenarios that are fun with the FC such as NPC, Thargoid, Squadron battles etc.

I think I'll play squatter at a station til the carrier upkeep is fixed for me to warrant to buy one for myself. Fleet Carriers are supposed to be your OWN PERSONAL HOME, not some rented apartment or condo with the damned upkeep.

According to the reveal video they charge Arx for all Fleet Carrier cosmetics. Basic cosmetics should be free, because players like to customize their FC as Alliance, Empire, Federation or Independent. This could be unlocked while playing. Additional cosmetics can be purchased.

what does this "quality" mean? we don't have this unit in the game. does this equate to some sort of engineering grade? tier 3 being grade 3 engineered?

do these modules differ from modules you can buy at any other station? can you draw a scenario where this would be useful at all?
The grades A-E that modules come in can be considered a quality.

Couldn't say better meself. Yes, I was dreaming something like ... have own float home in the deepest Void and never see humans next 2-3 years :D and yet again do activities like mining, not only FSS.

My biggest problem right now, with the information we have, is that they seem completely useless for exploration or even long distance mining. To travel 1000 ly would take 3 hours with all the cooldowns. To that you have to add the time it takes to gather fuel. With my engineered DBX that have a 60+ reach I can travel those 1000 ly in about 20 minutes.

o7 all
impressive job @frontier
about the firts BETA : i'm currently working in Colonia, do i have to move to the Bubble to buy an FC ?
if so, when do you plan to fork the players data into the betas servers ?
(i would prefer to avoid 2 Colonia/Bubble trip so close...)
They usually create the beta galaxy about 14 days before the planned launch of the beta, so it probably happened 10 days ago.

Thing is, it's not quite an apples-to-apples comparison. It'd be more accurate to compare a race between a sports car (or even a regular sedan) and a tractor-trailer. Car's gonna win a distance race every time, but the car is, at best, only going to be able to bring along a certain amount of things (and if it tries towing another car, forget it in most cases over long distances). The tractor-trailer, while slower, can capably bear a significantly larger burden.

Dear fdev. Please stand your ground on this one. So many bad design decisions are made because of a loud minority. Do not turn this into a “design by committee” wreck.
I love what you’re doing, can’t wait for the beta.

Care to specify which decisions you agree with and are being disagreed with by a "loud minority"?

In what way do you disagree with some of the points being raised? Why do you think certain things that are being criticized are actually a good thing?

Is the exploration community that have concerns over the lack of UC being available just being a loud minority? Should their desire for UC be disregarded? Do you think its a good idea for FCs not to have UC, even though they the other two major pillars (trade and combat contacts) will be supported?

So, i just heard about being able to put FCs into some sort of shutdown mode where they will accrue "reduced" costs. Were there any actual figures for this? Will you be able to do that while you have ships stored on board?

You can turn off services while it do jumps (ships onboard it seems) as their example, meaning u will pay some but less then full operational.

What about the support vessels instead of thinking of them as pulling away from fleet carrier customization why not use them to increase the fleet carriers specialization in to the role that the owner wants to use it for?

My question would be, can you set landing and use of services for only NPCs, so as to avoid taking an unsuspecting Commander with you when you jump who just happens to have parked his Adder there before popping off to walk the dog 😀

No, it's commanders only. NPC will at most patrol it around in bubble and stop black market activities prohibited in system.
And yes, u can stop any commander to land except you.

There was a figure shown in one of the slides. I seem to remember 4,000 cr a week for a shut down service (someone would need to confirm that though .. and subject to change anyway as per hot build).

edit: for me docking fees and cartographic vouchers are a better exploration upkeep bet than cartographics, though i think you should be able to back up your cartographics data with a carrier.
