Fleet Command and Control

As I'm gearing up for the Xbox premonition event, or whatever it's called happening on the 29th- I've noticed a pretty serious lack of in game support for large scale multiplayer events. Understanding that initially the game hasn't been geared towards that, the way that the story line is unfolding I think that some upgrades to wing interfacing and the ability to control multiple wings at once -lets call it a squadron- or a fleet if you will, are going to become vital in the near future. The idea being that two wings can join under one fleet or squadron commander, allowing for a group of 4 to remain separate in their wing, but can be seen by their sister wing under the command of one fleet commander, effectively allowing 8 CMDRs to be cohesive in combat or whatever other activity is being had. I imagine it would look Similar to raid UI in WoW.

Given that instancing on Xbox only supports 16 players at a time, I believe that a fleet should at max consist of 2 wings of 4. The reasoning behind this is so that no one fleet can control an instance with a fleet of 3 wings and gang up on the lone wing of 4 in that specific instance. Keeping the playing field semi-level in numbers, save ship type, skill, etc..

Has anyone seen any other talk on this? Is it viable? Thoughts?

i don't think I worded my idea here as gracefully as I wanted, but I think the idea is in there somewhere.

You can "kind of" do stuff like this. I used to go into expansions with 6 CMDR's, 2 wings of 3, or 1 with 4 and 1 with 2. Usually once we had 2 full wings it would split us into different instances.

It has been awhile, but back then instancing was beyond bad... but, we still got it to work fairly often. Comms were handled by an Xbox live party connection for all of us in the zone, and pew pew...

I was just thinking as if an 8 v 8 combat scenario were to unfold with the current wing system, the potential for mass confusion in targeting and fratricide would be very real. Without being able to quickly reference and ID members of your 8 man SQDN via the HUD, you'd be sifting through targets trying to not select your own mate, let alone remember the 7 on your side in the heat of battle now that ships have names that appear etc.. additionally, having to use external systems to communicate via discord, party chat, Skype, what have you.

Typically a squadron is 12 to 24 aircraft (natural unit size) unfortunately despite selling millions upon millions of the things microsoft has never deemed to make one capable of putting more than 32 people into the same game, so it would either have to be an expansion of the single wing or being able to from temporary alliances with other wings maybe

Technicalities of what to call it aside, being able to have visual verification and coordination of 8 CMDRs instead of just 4 would be great, especially with everything being planned in premenition. As of now, everything is being planned via excel spreadsheets with CMDR names- only allowing for oversight via external systems. The likelyhood of the 'fleet' setup actually instancing together is almost not possible. So that's a downer. Fleet commanders will have several different wings they are in control of in several different instances. I hope that one day instancing will be fixed. How does ESO do it with their massive PvP battleground (200 players I believe?). Battlefield also allows for 64 players.

i stand corrected on the player count

I think that they use a separate dedicated server for their PvP though, as you have to zone into Cyrodiil for ESO and the server for BF is also separate. I'm no programmer so I have no idea what it would take to up the player count for each instance in elite, but to my understanding it's a matter of unpacking and packing each instance, as each instance is not always constantly up. At this point I'm speculating and speaking well above my programming knowledge. But I still don't understand what blocks Elite from allowing more than 16 in an instance. I've heard it's microsofts fault before, but I don't know the reasoning behind it.

Just pointing out the enemy wing would be red and can be cycled through with select next/previous/highest threat bindings. Allies will be blue

Understood, but I'm speaking in an 8 v 8 CMDR scenario. Only 3 of your buddies would be blue, and only hostiles engaged would be red, leaving a whole lot of orange to sift through.

I 100% support this idea. I love the idea of having something like 16v16 player battles, and coordinating that would be impossible rn, even beyond technical instancing limitations.

Kind of derailing the topic, but if the only way of having more players instance together is to do it on a dedicated server, why not create a battleground that players can bring their own ships into for PvP? Not unlike CQC... but not bad and empty (sorry to those of you who love CQC), players could Queue up and wait while they play. The only real hangup would be devising a good matchmaking system, assuming it's not a continuously open battlespace. I can't imagine it would be impossible to have several contested systems up on a dedicated server. A space Cyrodiil, if you will. Something I'd love to see later down the line.

Just food for thought.

An afterthought, if this were to be done in actual faction contested systems- make the reward merits (with credits too). Boom, power play fix.
