Distant Worlds II Event Fleet Mechanics

Updated SOP created that's 5000% better than the old one. All information is now in 2 files:

SOP: https://www.dropbox.com/s/am5psec6u041onn/Fleet Mechanics SOP.pdf?dl=0

Additional Information: https://www.dropbox.com/s/r0fta98g2i3ylps/Fleet Mechanics Additional Information.pdf?dl=0

These will be updated as feedback comes in. As always if the format (Dropbox / PDF) is a problem please reach out, I'm still a bit unsure what works best for file uploads/sharing.

Also Fleet Mechanics Art-work Repository added:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...eals-Artwork-Repository?p=7330427#post7330427

Which I'm sure will grow with time as our artists are epic!

Finally the OP of this thread should be updated tomorrow or Friday with these links/documents etc to be more than the front-page advert that it currently is. Standby for that :)

I'm registered as a Seal. Can I use those images in my sig on this forum?

Edit: The link to the Google form doesn't work (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd0jCrrsxCaM18R4JaNy3fyvleM/edit) File doesn't exist

Ironic. I posted this in a thread earlier today that I was going to run DW2 as AAA. I just signed the Swamp Fox, my Phantom, as fleet mechanic. She is fitted with a repair controller and 62 limpits. I just purchased the vibrant paint pack and yellow exhaust so I'll run in "Roadside Yellow".

I signed up as a Mechanic secondary role since I'm bringing a repair limpet controller.

That being said, non-mechanic players should make it a point to carry enough materials to craft limpets on their own to jettison and be picked up by the repair limpet player. Limpets are very pricey to synthesize (I'm not bringing along limpets to save weight until needed) and it would suck for only the repairing player to blow through all his mats alone.

I believe the mining wing and logistics wings are going to be supporting both limpet material gathering and possibly limpet supplying during the expedition. Details tbc since I don't have them to hand but I think there's one or two haulers packing 500 or so each to resupply and distribute as we go.

Also in news: The bot is now live on Discord.
There are 3 mechanic roles total:
"Distant Worlds 2 Mechanic" - All mechanics should join this and stay joined. This will be used for key announcements along the way.

There is also now:
"Active Mechanic"
"Active Mechanic Dispatcher"

These are for people to assign/un-assign themselves using the bot on the discord.
When a repair case comes in the bot will auto-ping the dispatcher role. The Dispatcher gets the clients information as per SOP and can then ping the Active Mechanic role to alert everyone in that group to the repair call. If you don't want to be on-call and just want to fly for a few hours or be offline, un-assign yourself from the Active role.

The SOP is being updated to accommodate these changes, Code Black guidance and other suggestions/improvements.

Standard Joke For the Seals:

"I've blown a seal."

"Keep your private life out of it and let me fix your ship."

Attention all PS4 Seals!

We'd like to take a final picture of the Hull Seals fleet before we leave the bubble.

Can all Seals that want to join be at Bakewell Point in the Pallaeni system at 9 am UTC tomorrow (Saturday) please? (https://eddb.io/station/34470)

I believe the other platforms are doing something similar, so please have a look in the discord channel for more info regarding what time.

EDIT: Please note this will be in the DW2 Private group

I'm now well stocked up on repair and refuel limpets. I also have every rare version of alcohol from around the bubble, (lots of cargo space on my Beluga), so will leave one with every rescue/help/assist I do. Maybe even the odd cigar.

Got my whiskey and cigars packed too. :)

I carry a 3A repair limpit controller in my ship. and have fleet mechanic as secundary role.
I only synth limpits. And carry what i have left. To keep jump range high.
I can hold 16 ton (corrosive) cargo.

I'll be bringing a 3D repair controller with 42 limpets on the PC. I can carry a maximum of 64. Space is finite though since I've opted to bring along a Research controller. Figured we might as well bring back samples from the journey. :)

Rev 2 of Standard Operating Procedure, now with Code Black guidance and updates based on everyones awesome feedback.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/08r3nzd870c7946/Fleet_Mechanics_SOP_Rev_2.pdf?dl=0

As always any feedback/observations/corrections etc let us know and they'll go on the list for Rev 3.
Anything not clear, let me know and I can expand/fix the wording.
Can you think of a way to make it less text heavy. Do a image/flowchart/info-graphic and we will use it!

I'm a bit late to the party but I think it will still be worthwhile sharing some of my experiences with repair rescues as a fuel rat. The SOP looks really thorough and well considered so I'm not sure I have any recommendations for any changes on that front. What I can do is emphasise some safety issues and the importance of briefing the clients thoroughly before the rescue is attempted.

Unfortunately not all rescues are successful. Even the apparently straightforward cases are not without risks so always be vigilant. Since the client's hull is already damaged, perhaps critically, the last thing you need is for your ships to collide. Always zero your throttle when dropping in on a client's beacon. Sometimes you will find that you drop in very close by. For dispatch it would advisable to check that the client has their shields activated for the rescue wherever possible. Once you are in the instance with the client try to avoid a situation where you are pointing towards their ship, or their ship is pointed towards yours. This can be harder than you think because many clients like to get a good look at their mechanic. Accidental boosting is very commonplace. I realise that this has already been covered in the SOP, but it bears repeating.

Why do "code black" rescues fail? I can tell you a couple of ways that things have gone wrong in the rescues I have attempted previously. One of the rescues was a 110kLy round trip so it was a lesson hard learned.

We thought we had "plenty of time". You never have plenty of time. The sand is flowing through the hourglass faster than you think. Everything seemed to be going to plan and we managed to get the client into the instance in the ring where we were mining the asteroids, but the client didn't manage to scoop the iron and nickel. When we asked them afterwards what the problem was, they said they couldn't find the materials amongst all the mined fragments. In this case the rescue might have been successful if they had been briefed to target the materials by looking at the bottom of the list in the contacts panel and selecting them there.

A second rescue failed because the client didn't allow enough time for the life support synthesis to complete. It's just not worth trying to cut it fine.

Repair rescues can range from being the most simple, casual jobs going, right up to the most risky, complicated affairs. Good communication and coordination between the mechanics, dispatch and the client is essential for the operation to run smoothly. It's not an easy job, but I have faith that all the Cmdrs who have volunteered to be mechanics will do everything in their collective power to keep the fleet moving safely towards its goal.

Hi All,

Yes I'm way behind on updating the OP here. I promise I will do it but it's been crazy busy lately.
Also congratulations on a great start, already 60 successful repairs within 24 hours and that figure is rising as I type!

News:

Competition!
So I know a lot of you love to role-play/create/write so we have a writing competition for a logbook/journal/roleplay entry. An example of something in this style/format can be found here https://cosmicflippertours.wordpress.com/2018/04/30/fuel-ratting/

Rules:
  • This competition will close for entries at 20:00 on 17th Feb
  • WORD LIMIT 500 words max, this isn't a target either, there's a lot of you and few of us and we have to read all your entries.
  • Multiple entries can be submitted and will be judged but be thoughtful of the reviewers! If we feel anyone has abused this we reserve the right to randomly select a sample from their submissions ignoring the rest. If you write a lot the advice is to hang fire until end of January and pick your favourite few.
  • English only submissions please, sadly we don't have an international judging team.
  • Submissions must be real to a degree (we want to hear about your exploits as part of the Mechanics/Hull Seals!) but can be embellished somewhat as with the example above. Can be written 3rd/1st person.
  • Screenshots/Photos are allowed but won't be judged upon.
  • We will be judging on how compelling the writing is, how much we feel that we are in the story, and how much we want to read more.
  • Our decision is final, yes it's a bit subjective but this is also a bit of fun we are doing on the side of the Mechanics role so please don't take it personally if we don't choose you.
  • Submit to AlexBrentnall via Private Message either on Discord or here on the Forums with the link to the story (if public) or the text itself. You can link to your own post in the Forums by clicking the number top right of the post box and then copying the address in the search bar.
  • Anyone that can see the Fleetcomm Mechanics organisation team chat is not allowed to win but is welcome to join in!
  • Winners will be announced when we've had time to read and decide them. Ideally by WP8 but no promises, we've no idea how many entries to expect!
  • Prize - In game item of your choice from the store (paintjob/shipkit/customisation etc). Possibly also your story posted in full in the next edition of the DW2 Newsletter <- Pending discussion/agreement with Newsletter organisers later this week.

2nd bit of news:
If you have any links/guides/useful information that's not critical for the day to day SOP but is good to know, then please post the links. Stuff like repair limpet controller stats on wikipedia and the Neutron Star escape guide. I'm updating the "Additional Information" document in a big way this week so send-em if you got em!
